Temu Tat…

PinkPonyClubb · 03/01/2026 07:36

Does anyone else get annoyed by Temu gifts that break?

My young child is continually gifted Temu gifts from family members for birthdays and Christmas.

They are cheaply made and don’t last - two examples an aeroplane that wing broke when my child caught it’s side on a wooden floor while playing with it. A car that’s wheel snapped of when it travelled down a ramp.

And the latest - a light gun that batteries containers has smashed after being knocked of the table.

I know there has been a few knocks but these are children toys. So fed up of my 3 year old becoming upset because there toys are broken.

Please stop buying my child cheap tat.

Anyone else?

Said it before but I think for a lot of people it's all about the warm fuzzy feelings at the sight of a big pile of wrapped gifts. If you're cash strapped you could choose to just buy one, maybe smaller, good quality present but you don't get the same satisfaction.

Yes I just don’t understand this, why do parents want piles of tat in their houses

DecemberGloom · 04/01/2026 18:36

There is no justification for buying from these sites. The excuses of poverty being a reason are ridiculous. Why should less fortunate children be exposed to utter crap; let alone the children that have been abused to produce it.

oldmoaner · 04/01/2026 18:38

I've purchased lots of stuff from Temu, not toys, but clothes and all been really nice and washed well. Also a few household items all great and nothing has broken. Clicks together carpet tiles are great.

I thought thal there were quite stringent healrh and safety UK laws in chidren toys?

Does this not apply to stuff bought online on the Web?

Nope.

if things are being imported in large quantities by a reseller then there is a chance that the shipment will be intercepted and inspected by customs. Single packages bought from shite sites like Temu are not checked. You have no idea what you’re buying.

still. It’s cheap.

i shopped at Temu for the first and last time before Christmas. A couple of small gifts for DC’s birthday, couple of tops for me and scrapbooking/hobby supplies. Most advertised as UK based for delivery.
A large bag of stuff arrived after Christmas and I wasn’t expecting top quality stuff for the price of the tops but what I got was absolute shite. Apparently I can only return one item with free shipping and would have to pay for the rest.
The tops are nothing like the photos, I usually shop for clothes in charity shops and now I realise that buying online and cheap isn’t always the best way.
I’m at fault but I got sucked in by all the offers that I would supposedly get for free with my order, none of which turned up.
The hobby supplies were crap on the whole. All shipped from China as I tracked them rather than the UK warehouse. Never again, lesson learned!

No, you can return the whole order if you want. You can't do more than one return per order, so basically you have to send all the returned items together.

Say you don’t like your in-laws without saying you don’t like your in-laws….

No wonder they don't like them if they buy crap from Temu!

There are, and anything sold by an actual retailer whether that's John Lewis or Argos or Poundland, online or in store, will have to meet safety requirements.

Small packages being sent direct from China by Temu or Shein - or even all those random jumble of letters 'brands' sold through Amazon (eg the same baby rattles being sold be 'Vicloon' 'Syid' and 'Infinno') - avoid any safety testing or regulation.

dogsarebetterthanppl · 04/01/2026 19:52

i must admit i'm terrible for online shopping on these places (more especially tiktok shop), but i would never buy cheap plastic tat for kids, it could be dangerous depending on what way it breaks. in your position i would tell them i was trying to declutter toys and instil a love of reading so could they please buy a book or two for presents.

StMarie4me · 04/01/2026 19:55

I’ve been gifted Temu tat this year, went straight to the Charity shop. Awful smelling candies and rubbish I would never want. Feel like that person doesn’t know me at all!

Rednotdead · 04/01/2026 20:01

How do you know it was bought from Temu?

Eejaymm · 04/01/2026 20:13

I have never bought anything from Temu or Aliexpress or any company on Amazon that has links to China.

nevernotmaybe · 04/01/2026 20:36

BettysRoasties · 03/01/2026 16:47

Are you sure it’s from Temu and not Amazon. Both basically sell the same stuff on some levels.

But have a word with the gifter if you think it will work. Ask for books instead.

Though I’ve got things form Argos that have barely lasted a few days as a toy and things from Amazon/Temu still going strong a year later. Some temu items are from local shops hobby craft is on there and sell there paint cheaper on temu than they do in store

Edited

I just spent 5 minutes trying different searches and scrolling through results and didn't find anything showing hobbycraft on there. Can't see anywhere on their actual site they are on temu either.

It’s very cheap plastic, is wrapped in a plastic wrapper and has Chinese writing on the wrapper and or box. These items aren’t something I’ve seen in shops either. The quality is awful.

I absolutely love seeing my child upset because one of his presents has broken, again, broken because he’s gifted poorly made, cheap tat. It just fills my heart with so much love towards my in-laws. I thank these wonderful people for continually creating upset at birthdays and Christmas.

Cheap for a reason

AgreeToDisagreeSometimes · 04/01/2026 21:35

I have told everyone not to buy anything for us from Temu (or Amazon - same factory suppliers!)

I refuse any item that has come directly from the unregulated factories - products made of toxic chemicals, use it once and will end in the bin.

I can’t believe people are buying so much crap they don’t need just because it’s cheap.

More worryingly, people are buying unsafe and harmful toys to give to children and babies who may end up putting these in their mouths ?? They’re being imported into the country with no QC’s? They would have faked the quality certification marks - undercutting the companies who have paid a premium to carry out the quality checks, research and testing legitimately. Eventually losing all the jobs after the loss of high streets

for what?? a few pieces of tat - most of which have broken, gone in the bin and more money was spent to replace with a better quality one.

Some of the money we spend on the high street will go back to the tax payers and economy whereas the money spent at Temu - guess what, isn’t benefiting anyone except Temu (and dare I say, China?!)

Koalatea13 · 04/01/2026 21:37

Ah yes. My mother buys my kids tat off Shein and Temu and it's a complete waste of money. She does it because she doesn't have a lot of money and it will go further so in her eyes I guess she can still spoil the grandkids. However, I'd much rather she just bought the kids a few nice presents rather than clothes that won't be worn and toys that will break. We've had a similar experience this Christmas- mum bought the kids one of those dancing cactuses that copies what you say to it. It works fine (although looks cheap), but my child put it down on the table slightly hard and the battery compartment has snapped 🙄 it lasted about 2 days. I've never had this happen with non-temu rubbish

Amazon and Temu are not remotely the same.

Temu is almost exclusively China based cheap things imported by China based suppliers after the fact, occasionally already here but rarer. It has some limited local programs started recently but still very limited.

Amazon is a normal place to shop for all normal products sold in the UK, but you have to keep an eye out for those who are listing similarly bad products as above which is easy with the tiniest bit of thought. If you are very lazy you might get tripped up on Amazon due to people trying to sell cheap crap recently. But it isnt Temu, and is easy to still use normally with little effort.

Same. Glad it may not be true. I know some genuine companies are on Amazon but good for them being able to use another platform to reach their customers. Shame they’ve had to resort to joining them as Amazon are also notorious for being tax dodgers. Everyone give the Celebs a rough time for tax evasion but you still all use Amazon and Temu! Well done

Yes I 100% know they are different!!

All I was saying was Temu suppliers ARE ALSO on Amazon. Therefore don’t buy me any tat from either place especially if they are coming directly from China. Genuine stores are fine but if you do an Amazon search for a product, most listings are most likely also on Temu

Luckily I have friends and family who buy from brick and mortar as I would not trust they would have checked. There’s just been a few people who I’ve had to make aware, to raise awareness more than anything.

Yeah but you wouldn't give it as gifts, would you? Or give Temu toys, clothes or baby equipment to a child?

TheFairyCaravan · 04/01/2026 22:50

You have to be so careful what you buy from Amazon now because a lot of what’s on there is direct from Temu. I was looking for a particular toy for DGS, can’t remember what it was but I knew it would go in his mouth because he’s little. Some of the toys on Amazon looked like they’d be from Temu, so I had a look and they were.

I’ll only buy toys with brand names that I know and trust.
