Temu Tat…

PinkPonyClubb · 03/01/2026 07:36

Does anyone else get annoyed by Temu gifts that break?

My young child is continually gifted Temu gifts from family members for birthdays and Christmas.

They are cheaply made and don’t last - two examples an aeroplane that wing broke when my child caught it’s side on a wooden floor while playing with it. A car that’s wheel snapped of when it travelled down a ramp.

And the latest - a light gun that batteries containers has smashed after being knocked of the table.

I know there has been a few knocks but these are children toys. So fed up of my 3 year old becoming upset because there toys are broken.

Please stop buying my child cheap tat.

Anyone else?

I buy lots of beads, findings and cords from Temu and the quality is fine.
I bought some door furnishings from Amazon and where were they made, yes China and they were not cheap tatt same as not all stuff on Temu is tatt.

insomniacalways · 03/01/2026 20:27

Tell them you can't allow the kids to have TEMU items.... They don't meet proper safety standards.

RhaenysRocks · 03/01/2026 20:33

I got a lovely scarf from a UK high street store at Xmas. Cost about £50. Guess where it's made?

I got an underwater digital camera from Temu for £15..cheaper than a disposable Kodak. Absolutely brilliant piece of kit.

I've got several t shirts from Temu, less than £5 each. Really nice quality cotton, wash great. £12-15 from supermarkets, worse quality.

It's just not as simple now as "shop ethically". You can't if you try. Watch the Good Place ... excellent episode on this towards the end where an ethics professor who has huge anxiety about doing the right thing can't actually work it out.

weaselpatrol · 03/01/2026 20:38

I don’t trust any toys (or clothing) from TEMU, especially those that require batteries and/or charging. My mum has bought stuff in the past for my daughter and I have just shoved it to the back of the cupboard to dispose of later. It’s not worth the risk.

I use temu, Im poor and I need to live.

I've been dirt poor. Eating Weetabix with water for lunch poor. I didn't need a single thing from Temu. Nobody NEEDS anything from Temu. People want to buy "bits" from there and need to justify their decisions.

MyNavyFish · 03/01/2026 20:50

I completely understand. We have a family friend who has bought a huge amount of gifts for our 5 month DS. They are very poor quality and I have concerns about safety. I just won't give any of it my baby. I have three big bags worth of it at the bottom of my wardrobe. I won't donate it as I don't want other babies to be at risk, so sadly off to landfill it will go. I sound very ungrateful but with the amount this family member spends they could get one nice gift from a reputable company.

Pollyanna87 · 03/01/2026 21:03

How poor does one need to be before they can disregard slavery?

Happyjoe · 03/01/2026 21:08

Never ever been tempted to order from them, I certainly wouldn't buy gifts from Temu/Shein or whatever they are called. Old adage, you get what you pay for.

Not all items made in China may be through slavery. However, slavery has been linked to Temu hasn't it?
Once you know, should it not make a difference? For example, I used to buy products in my youth, then found out they were tested on animals. I stopped buying them, couldn't justify the cruelty in my purchase.

Same as quality. For sure, expensive items in the UK can be made in China, but Temu will have to be making cuts along the way, design, materials, slavery to keep their costs down to tempt European buyers by their price.

Coffeeandcocktails · 03/01/2026 21:16

Yes!!! Not Temu but the cheapest cr*p they can find! Both sides of the families too!

Also not about the money, it’s about quantity over quality and it drives me insane!

Even when they ask for ideas, they will then buy heaps of random tat to go along with the decent gifts I have suggested.

How many days since Christmas and we’ve already had two meltdowns over their presents breaking etc!

VikaOlson · 03/01/2026 21:17

I wouldn't let a child have anything from Temu to be honest.

No safety testing
Batteries and magnets in them that are dangerous
Made with toxic dyes or chemicals.

Not worth the risk just to save a couple of quid.

babyproblems · 03/01/2026 21:18

a warning for anyone who sees this that buys kids toys online from china - they often don’t meet UK EU safety regs. I don’t mean breaking and poor quality, I mean toxic plastic dyes and chemical ingredients!!!

I do buy things from there for business use, we source packaging for example. But I’d never buy kids things directly from China

Lonelycrab · 03/01/2026 21:25

Ffs don’t buy anything from temu ever!

Its the epitome of absolute junk

AyrshireTryer · 03/01/2026 21:31

Do they have a CE Mark?

SP2024 · 03/01/2026 21:34

We don’t have any of it and don’t know anyone who buys from there. Most of our kids toys like that are wooden, but all bought from Aldi and Lidl middle aisles so super cheap. Maybe suggest books, colouring books, paint/pencils instead?

i shopped at Temu for the first and last time before Christmas. A couple of small gifts for DC’s birthday, couple of tops for me and scrapbooking/hobby supplies. Most advertised as UK based for delivery.
A large bag of stuff arrived after Christmas and I wasn’t expecting top quality stuff for the price of the tops but what I got was absolute shite. Apparently I can only return one item with free shipping and would have to pay for the rest.
The tops are nothing like the photos, I usually shop for clothes in charity shops and now I realise that buying online and cheap isn’t always the best way.
I’m at fault but I got sucked in by all the offers that I would supposedly get for free with my order, none of which turned up.
The hobby supplies were crap on the whole. All shipped from China as I tracked them rather than the UK warehouse. Never again, lesson learned!

No, for each order I think you can return as many items as you want but if you then decide to return something else later from that same order, it’s then you have to pay the P&P so you should be okay as long as you return the unwanted stuff in one go as it were.

Do they have a CE Mark?

No, they ship direct so bypass EU and UK safety standards

"Among the worst examples McGrath came across were baby soothers with beads that fall off easily, which pose a choking hazard because they did not have the regulation-size hole to enable a baby who did swallow one accidentally to continue to get air.
Among other goods cited by MEPs in a report released this month include children’s raincoats with toxic chemicals, sunglasses with no UV filter and kids’ shorts with drawstrings longer than regulation length, which cause a trip hazard.
They also found cosmetics containing butylphenyl methylpropional, also known as Lilial, which is listed as a chemical of “very high concern” by the EU and has been banned since 2022 over concerns that it affects fertility and foetal development. "

Are you sure it’s from Temu and not Amazon. Both basically sell the same stuff on some levels.

But have a word with the gifter if you think it will work. Ask for books instead.

Though I’ve got things form Argos that have barely lasted a few days as a toy and things from Amazon/Temu still going strong a year later. Some temu items are from local shops hobby craft is on there and sell there paint cheaper on temu than they do in store

Edited

It’s everywhere, I’m in a few craft groups and there’s some real snobbery on there by some members to those who post kits they’ve bought on temu and shein etc.

But then when they post their own little hauls they’ve bought from local craft fairs or independent craft shops, it’s temu stuff too.

There’s a little gothic witchy gift shop just opened in my town and it’s stocked with temu stuff that’s marked up a lot. Almost every product in there is on temu.

Yup if you shop smart you just cut the price rather than buying pure crap.

My hobby craft orders via Temu save me money yet are the same items and since it shares the tracking I know it’s definitely hobby craft not a front.

Other people and shops buy from temu suppliers including Amazon and Poundland type companies and car booter types and then sell it for a much higher price. I’ve got watering systems that a big garden centre sells for a lot of money identical off temu for maybe 10/15% of the price.

How poor does one need to be before they can disregard slavery?

Perhaps we need, again, to ask MN and lots of posters why they recommend Uniglo, when they use child slavery?
Some of the documentaries are worth a watch, because the argument is that employment is needed to prevent starvation. If those children wasn't working, they'd die. Perhaps that's the thought? It's still questionable that a parenting site advertises a company, which is one of the worse child employers, consideringthe cost of the garments. Zara is another brand which is totally exploitative. I wouldn't buy toys etc from shein, though.

Abd80 · 04/01/2026 00:55

I don’t let my children play with any tat from temu because loads of it won’t adhere EU or UK safety standards.

🤔 Who’s going to tell her where the vast majority of Fisher Price toys are made…..?

Two things can be true at the same time. Some Chinese factories have standards, some don't.

A quick google is all that's needed.

Both of you making yourselves feel better for buying cheap shite that is manufactured by forced labour. Bleughhh.
