AIBU to think this is unhygienic?

My DM was standing in the kitchen near the sink wearing rubber sliders and long wide leg trousers that trail on the ground.

She was getting ready to make some lunch, then suddenly puts her bare foot up on the counter next to the drying rack where the clean dishes are sitting. She used to do ballet as a kid so is flexible enough to just kinda chill there like that which is what she did.

Knowing her I knew she wouldn't wipe down the surface or anything and would just go on and put the dishes away and make lunch. So I said in the gentlest, most polite voice possible asked her if she could not put her foot on the counter.

She rolled her eyes at me and left her foot up there for another several minutes😭 Then said her back hurts. She has a bad back, so that's normal for her to say.

As I was leaving the room she said under her breath but definitely making sure it was loud enough for me to hear "I've just been in the shower you know."

She had a shower about an hour and a half ago, she's wearing trousers that she also wore yesterday to the supermarket, on a walk etc and they trail on the ground.

I replied "Sorry, but it's still unhygienic to put your foot on the counter next to clean dishes."

She huffed and sighed, then took that foot down and put her other foot up on the other side of the counter and started doing the dishes like that.

I know this sounds semi hilarious now that I'm writing it out, but please someone tell me whether or not I'm being unreasonable for asking her to remove her bare foot from the clean kitchen counter?

Am I being unreasonable to think it's unhygienic too? I know she showered this morning, but surely I'm not the only one who thinks this is gross?

Her counter or your counter?

Either way sounds like you both don’t like each other.

ohohokeydokey · 01/01/2026 13:02

No we don't like each other. We've got a very bad relationship. It's both our counter😂 We all own a part of the house which we're about to sell. Going our separate ways finally this year!

Does she have athlete's foot, fungal toenails or verrucas?

ThirdStorm · 01/01/2026 13:04

I put my foot on the counter earlier when putting something away on top of the cupboard. I didn’t wipe it down. But I won’t prepare food in that spot so don’t see the problem if I’m honest. I’m possibly just as bad as your mother, sorry. Not sorry. 🤣

Celestialmoods · 01/01/2026 13:05

It’s not pleasant, but illness inducing germs are not going to jump from a foot to nearby dishes to be able to cause a hygiene issue. Just don’t eat your dinner off the counter.

ohohokeydokey · 01/01/2026 13:05

Oh dear, maybe I'm being very anally retentive😂

You just need to get out from under each other's feet (pun intended)!
As a yoga practitioner I would do what she does, but I can also see how it could freak a person out. So you need your own kitchens to both behave how you like. Then you might soften towards each other again!

Unhygienic.

My mil stood combing her hair in the kitchen of our holiday home.
Her hair was waist length. Stretching it out with the comb in the middle of the kitchen.
Makes me gag thinking about it.

Dolamroth · 01/01/2026 13:07

It's more weird than unhygienic.

I think that, if merely thinking about someone brushing their hair makes you almost gag, the problem lies with you.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/01/2026 13:10

Is combing your hair in the kitchen a bad thing? I used to brush DD’s in there all the time.

The poster clearly mentions that the hair was being brushed in the kitchen. That's where food is prepared. That's the problem, unless you don't have a good standard of hygiene.

I comb my hair in the kitchen, it's where the best lighting is...I dont cook food at the same time.
No one has ever objected, my house my rules.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/01/2026 13:14

Meh, I am very flexible after years of martial arts practice and have, on occasion, be known put my feet up on the kitchen countertop to paint my toe nails.

I clean my kitchen countertops regularly throughout the day and prepare food on appropriate, regularly scrubbed chopping boards. Also my feet and floors are cleaned very regularly.

Rank as fuck IMO

ChillingWithMySnowmies · 01/01/2026 13:16

it's not great, but also not worth being weird about. it wouldn't bother me.. did you think the germs were going to jump off her trousers onto the dishes?

Nucleus · 01/01/2026 13:19

Did she wipe her feet or the trousers on the clean dishes? That would be unhygienic. Houses are not sterile environments.

Re hair brushing in the kitchen. What on earth is the issue with that?

BadgernTheGarden · 01/01/2026 13:19

I always use boards or plates for food, so the counter doesn't have to be pristine. I wouldn't put my bare foot on it though, but I suppose hands are equally likely to be grubby. Clean dishes would be in the dishwasher or in the drying up rack before being put away so no where near an errant foot.

ChillingWithMySnowmies · 01/01/2026 13:23

don't people wipe the counters down before prepping food?

Someone at work sits at her desk combing her long hair, then sprinkles the loose strands over the floor and desk 😫

Who suddenly decides to put their foot up on a kitchen worktop??

Haha, no idea! Have I reached nearly 60 without knowing about secret hair bacteria that floats about contaminating food?! I mean, I don’t want hair in my food, nobody does. But eh?

Brilliant 😍 Absolutely dying to know what filmic plot scenario required his character to adopt this position .....
