AIBU to think this is unhygienic?

My DM was standing in the kitchen near the sink wearing rubber sliders and long wide leg trousers that trail on the ground.

She was getting ready to make some lunch, then suddenly puts her bare foot up on the counter next to the drying rack where the clean dishes are sitting. She used to do ballet as a kid so is flexible enough to just kinda chill there like that which is what she did.

Knowing her I knew she wouldn't wipe down the surface or anything and would just go on and put the dishes away and make lunch. So I said in the gentlest, most polite voice possible asked her if she could not put her foot on the counter.

She rolled her eyes at me and left her foot up there for another several minutes😭 Then said her back hurts. She has a bad back, so that's normal for her to say.

As I was leaving the room she said under her breath but definitely making sure it was loud enough for me to hear "I've just been in the shower you know."

She had a shower about an hour and a half ago, she's wearing trousers that she also wore yesterday to the supermarket, on a walk etc and they trail on the ground.

I replied "Sorry, but it's still unhygienic to put your foot on the counter next to clean dishes."

She huffed and sighed, then took that foot down and put her other foot up on the other side of the counter and started doing the dishes like that.

I know this sounds semi hilarious now that I'm writing it out, but please someone tell me whether or not I'm being unreasonable for asking her to remove her bare foot from the clean kitchen counter?

Am I being unreasonable to think it's unhygienic too? I know she showered this morning, but surely I'm not the only one who thinks this is gross?

I do like a foot on a surface… wouldn’t put my shoes up there though.

I’ve been bollocked for passing the spliff with my feet before though so what do I know

🤣🤣🤣

Off to the kitchen to see if I’m flexible enough to rest my foot next to the dishes…

Oh dear, maybe I'm being very anally retentive😂

You aren’t. It’s unhygienic to put feet on a counter where food is served. It’s also bad mannered but you asked about the hygiene. Doesn’t matter if she’d had a shower - she then walked across the floor with the feet that she put on the counter. Even if shoes never go on the floor other feet go on the floor. Plus you mention the trousers that have been touching the ground outside then dragging across the floors. That her feet are then on and then on the counter. It’s disgusting as is anyone who thinks it’s acceptable to put feet on a counter without them disinfecting it.

For all the people who think OP is unreasonable - have you any idea how long the bacteria and parasites from dog poo remains on the ground? So her mother had walked outside - picking this up on her trousers and it’s now on the floors and - despite having had a shower also on her feet. It’s now on the worktop.

Does she have athlete's foot, fungal toenails or verrucas?

Does it matter? It’s feet. They’ve been on the floor. They’ve been in trousers that have picked up bacteria and parasites from the floor outside. It’s disgusting regardless.

Try it! You will be thrilled if you can. Please report back.

That's fine, but don't do it on the counter 😉

Sparkhaze · 03/01/2026 22:36

Wouldn't bother me to be honest unless someone had noticeably skanky feet, the sort with a smell to make small mammals keel over. There are probably worse sins lurking behind our fridge.

LucyLoo1972 · 03/01/2026 23:18

I am just amazed that anybody could actually get their foot up to reach a counter to put it on

ive never seen such a thing and cant imagine why on earth anybody would do it

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 04/01/2026 00:10

My cats walk on my kitchen counters all the time, you'd be horrified in my house!

TheWonderhorse · 04/01/2026 00:27

God you'd hate my house, I like to rest my armpits on the grill pan.

Seriously though, I'd have been more impressed than horrified.

So many PPs saying they brush their hair in the kitchen 🤢 There’s a reason kitchen staff & service staff wear their hair up or in a hair net.

Buffypaws · 04/01/2026 07:39

I’m rank but I don’t brush my hair in the kitchen.

there’s enough cat hair in there already

Because they are close to food preparation. We have a kitchen diner. The hairbrish part is miles away from the kitchen surfaces.

Buffypaws · 04/01/2026 08:23

Omg you guys I just did this and the kitchen counter was too easy so I tried the cupboard above the counter and did it!

I like the sound of her

Oh dear, mother and daughter don't think alike. Your mam and you are still here doing what she always done.
Loads of people stand and sit on counter tops. Believe me everyone lived haha.. Don't be too hard on her.
It's the right time to move out. Then you can clean clean and clean some more haha

Unhygienic.

My mil stood combing her hair in the kitchen of our holiday home.
Her hair was waist length. Stretching it out with the comb in the middle of the kitchen.
Makes me gag thinking about it.

Why? 🤨

Rosealea · 04/01/2026 11:57

AliceandOscar · 01/01/2026 14:29

I don’t brush my hair in the kitchen, but due to illness and cancer treatment I shed everywhere. Wherever I’ve been, you will find hair I’ve left behind. Never consider it as being unhygienic, just a pain when it blocks the hoover again.

The shark hoovers with anti hair wrap tech are a game changer. I don't remember the last time I had to cut hair out of the roller brushy thing.

I hope everything gets sorted for you health wise 💞

Merc123 · 04/01/2026 20:33

Presumably it would drift about and could possibly get on counters/food. Also at waist length thats a LOT of hair. When brushing scalp bits fly off as well so its not the best thing to do in the kitchen. Is the bathroom/bedroom unavailable? That would make more sense.

Regarding the "leg up"... its more the dirty jeans that have swashed about outside, likely in contact with germs, dog poo matter, etc. Maybe say you would appreciate her doing her stretches in shorts..and gtfo asap
