AIBU to think this is unhygienic?

My DM was standing in the kitchen near the sink wearing rubber sliders and long wide leg trousers that trail on the ground.

She was getting ready to make some lunch, then suddenly puts her bare foot up on the counter next to the drying rack where the clean dishes are sitting. She used to do ballet as a kid so is flexible enough to just kinda chill there like that which is what she did.

Knowing her I knew she wouldn't wipe down the surface or anything and would just go on and put the dishes away and make lunch. So I said in the gentlest, most polite voice possible asked her if she could not put her foot on the counter.

She rolled her eyes at me and left her foot up there for another several minutes😭 Then said her back hurts. She has a bad back, so that's normal for her to say.

As I was leaving the room she said under her breath but definitely making sure it was loud enough for me to hear "I've just been in the shower you know."

She had a shower about an hour and a half ago, she's wearing trousers that she also wore yesterday to the supermarket, on a walk etc and they trail on the ground.

I replied "Sorry, but it's still unhygienic to put your foot on the counter next to clean dishes."

She huffed and sighed, then took that foot down and put her other foot up on the other side of the counter and started doing the dishes like that.

I know this sounds semi hilarious now that I'm writing it out, but please someone tell me whether or not I'm being unreasonable for asking her to remove her bare foot from the clean kitchen counter?

Am I being unreasonable to think it's unhygienic too? I know she showered this morning, but surely I'm not the only one who thinks this is gross?

I'm with you OP, it's odd and unhygienic

Gallowayan · 01/01/2026 13:33

You really need to put your foot down.

Growlybear83 · 01/01/2026 13:34

Sorry, I think you’re being ridiculous OP, but not as bonkers as someone wanting to gag at the thought of someone brushing their hair in the kitchen.

TheLivelyCat · 01/01/2026 13:35

My DD climbs on my kitchen countertops and walks on it. (She 10 and no I don't encourage it from a safety point view).
Is it the most hygienic thing in the world no. But in a kitchen being cleaned regularly the chances of getting ill from it are small. Germs don't jump. You can wipe the countertop down afterwards. I'm more impressed she can keep her foot up there long enough.

I'm sorry but this made me laugh out loud😂

Yeuch and yeuch to the long hair too.

If it's good enough for Jean-Claude...

Brilliant 😍 Absolutely dying to know what filmic plot scenario required his character to adopt this position .....

The floor being lava, of course.

ETA: there's water on the floor and the baddie tries to taser him but gets zapped himself iirc.

A big show off.

Really? I’m a middle aged fat fucker and I can do it with ease.

Whosthetabbynow · 01/01/2026 13:30

Who suddenly decides to put their foot up on a kitchen worktop??

I’ve had a bad back for many years, and I can understand how doing that would help to stretch it if you’re quite a bendy person. But I’m in awe of anyone who’s presumably at least mid 40s being able to do that 😆😆. If I tried to get my foot onto the worktop I think I would either do myself a much worse injury or more likely fall over.

TeenLifeMum · 01/01/2026 13:40

Missing point of the thread but I now need to see if I can even get my foot onto the kitchen counter!

Doesn’t mean you’re not showing off.

Says the middle aged (jealous) fat fucker who definitely CAN’T do it🤣

Of course!

and the best supported actor goes to ... JCvD for FLOOR IS LAVA: THIS TIME IT'S VERTICAL

Dollymylove · 01/01/2026 13:44

Its kind of funny but gross at the same time. At least you will be free of it all when you sell the house 😅

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 01/01/2026 13:46

TeenLifeMum · 01/01/2026 13:41

But why would you? 😆

Because it genuinely will stretch and release painful or tight hamstrings and lower back muscles. So if it's an exercise you know works for you in another context - wall bars etc - and you are in pain, why wouldn't you?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/01/2026 13:47

Fingalscave · 01/01/2026 13:13

The poster clearly mentions that the hair was being brushed in the kitchen. That's where food is prepared. That's the problem, unless you don't have a good standard of hygiene.

But you’re not combing it over the sink or the sides. Why can’t you just stand in your kitchen and brush your hair?

Lavenderandbrown · 01/01/2026 13:48

I wouldn’t like it either OP. It’s unnecessary to treat “the” counter as a barre.
I’m pretty damn particular in my house with shoes clothes handwashing coats phones and keys. It’s well known and I get teased…

don’t like outdoor coats you know that thing you wear to work and to the restaurant and place on a chair and it falls on the floor and then you come home and sit on the coach with it??

filthy phones keys and bags..purses overnight bags and backpacks go on a side counter not the main food prep counter.

hair brushing which we do occasionally again not right next to food area but in the little
hallway near exit door. There’s a mirror there too.

hate peoples feet on counters. My clean little
feet jump on the counter to put things away and then I clean the counter.

wash hands as soon as I enter house. Unpack bags groceries from car and sometimes rewash them. Been doing this since 1999 when I had a toddler.

I’m never sick despite daily exposure. I was a front line caregiver direct Covid contact (properly gowned of course) and never had COVID. My 91 yr old high risk father staying with me did not either. Hygiene vigilance works for me.

Fuckoffeasypeelers · 01/01/2026 13:49

Sounds very attention seeking, you react, she gets her supply.
Ignore her

Funnywonder · 01/01/2026 13:53

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/01/2026 13:47

But you’re not combing it over the sink or the sides. Why can’t you just stand in your kitchen and brush your hair?

Exactly. I am really fussy about clean surfaces and handwashing, but I cut DS2 and DP’s hair in our kitchen, which also involves fair bit of combing. There’s good light and plenty of space and a tiled floor. It’s very easy to sweep and vacuum up. Unless I was going to eat my dinner straight off one of the floor tiles, I can’t think of any reason to get my knickers in a twist.

Gallowayan · 01/01/2026 13:54

As a quick portrait of your wierdly dissfuncyional relationship with your sis.,
I give you 10/10. But I don't find the bit about doing the washing up in this position entirely plausible 😂

RosesAndHellebores · 01/01/2026 13:55

My mother would do that and did, and could do the splits until she was 87. Trained ballerina. What she wouldn't have done is to wear trousers that trail on the floor. She is impeccably clean. I wish she could do it now but early fucking Parkinsons has put paid to it.

You'd hate my cats @ohohokeydokey but I do wipe the worktops before using them.

ohohokeydokey · 01/01/2026 13:05

Oh dear, maybe I'm being very anally retentive😂

I don't think you are. I would be really annoyed if I saw someone do that. It's a bit like people who put their feet on the seats on buses, especially if you're in the seat next to the one they've got their feet on. I never say anything in case they turn on me, but with your mum you should be able to tell her that it's not OK to do this.

vanillalattes · 01/01/2026 13:57

TeenLifeMum · 01/01/2026 13:41

Why not? It's a good high surface to stretch your legs and back.
