To keep an item that I have received a refund for as it was lost?

I ordered some shoes from JD Sports, £40 and they didn't arrive for weeks. I contacted them and they agreed to issue a refund. Just got an update from Evri that the shoes are ready to collect. Ive already got the refund but would like the shoes. AIBU to collect the shoes?
I bought the item from the website as a guest with no account and used my bank card so don't think they can realistically charge me again can they?

Because it’s caused a giant hassle! Shoes are way later delivered than promised, she now has to go pick them up, also has to ring the company up and pay which takes more time. Life is too full to add all this extra admin ontop when a company hasn’t delivered on service to begin with. I would feel differently if she had ordered from a little indie company who will feel the £40 in their profit margins but this is JD sports we are taking about

It’s still theft

if op can live with that then fine

She doesn’t have to do any of those things. She can just not pick them up and they will be returned after a period of time.

UneAnneeSansLumiere · 02/01/2026 09:52

I'd keep them, as part of what you were paying for was them being delivered in a timely way, which they weren't.

aliceinawonderland · 02/01/2026 12:18

Items returned are absolutely resold why do some people have this ridiculous idea? When I worked in a shop we would have returned items that we checked over and put straight back on the shelves.
Imagine all these companies doing free postage and then just chucking millions of £ of returns 😂

Yes! In fact I often keep my eye on certain websites for returns.

It's such an odd belief to have that expensive trainers etc are just chucked in the bin 😂

Id like to try the shoes on to see if I want them, not sure how I would pay afterwards though? Would they send a link or something, the shoes have gone up to £55 so not sure how that would work. Also if I didn't want to keep them how would I return them?

Return to a store

Coconutter24 · 02/01/2026 12:25

We all know what the right and moral thing to do is. Why do people make these posts hoping everyone will tell them it’s the stores mistake and to keep the shoes? To ease your own conscience? You’re going to do what you want to do so why bother with asking permission (because that’s what it is you want permission off strangers that it’s ok to keep them).

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 02/01/2026 12:26

Go get the shoes and arrange payment.
Evri are the worst!

If you want to be a thief go ahead. Can’t believe a decent person would even need to ask this question.

FFS 😂😂😂

Pineapplewaves · 02/01/2026 12:55

It’s very unlikely that they will want them back as the cost for the loss will have already gone through the system. I had the same issue with a Next order and they told me to keep it. You might want to get in touch with their customer services just to confirm though, you don’t want to start wearing them and then receive an invoice, unless you would be happy to pay if required….

Tink3rbell30 · 02/01/2026 13:05

She's definitely grabbed them and hoping to keep them for free.

Keep them.
Its the Evri tax. If companies choose to use (N)Evri they they have to accept that people will be complaining about stuff turning up v late or not at all.

I've complained about stuff not turning up.. had them re-issued and then ages afterwards the original item finally turns up.

Why should I then have to go out of my way to get it back to them?
Sod that.

Yeah it is quite annoying as they were significantly late and had to email several times to finally get the refund! But since I do want the shoes im happy to pay if asked

I always think... if they ask me to pay a second time then OK, will do .. but I'm not going out of my way to inform them its finally turned up, or make any effort to get it back to them..

Yep this is me….I ordered some curtains online….they didn’t arrive ….I got a refund…..6 weeks later the curtains randomly arrived….I kept them….no one asked for the money..,.this was 4 years ago

OchreSnail · 02/01/2026 15:08

From JD sports? I'd keep them. They're not short of a bob or two. If they find out the been delivered they'll get in touch.

Different reaction if it was from a small business.

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 02/01/2026 17:45

I would keep them! And have done this before 😂

I think most would despite the responses on here!
Ive got them stored in their box just incase they organize a return but not likely!

Last month, my car broke down the day before. So the following day, I went on the bus - two buses each to the hospital

On the last bus home, the payment and ticket machine broke down. So the driver let us board for free. It happened a few months before when I returned from meeting my friend in the city.

The bus company didn't ask us to pay in the future.

Just keep them it serves the companies right for messing up call it Compensation 😂

PixellatedPixie · 03/01/2026 15:32

Often companies just tell you to keep the extra things as they are not bothered to collect. I had that with a furniture company years ago.

Yes, I had this with some champagne glasses from my wedding list. They sent the wrong design, so sent the correct ones and said a different courier would collect the incorrect ones. They never contacted me again. I still have them 15 years later!

TimeForTeaAndG · 03/01/2026 15:55

I would view it as them compensating you for the late delivery rather than refunding and expecting the shoes back. Evri are shit and I've had two parcels go missing from Vinted that I had to pick them as the courier, though neither has made an appearance. It's one of the costs of doing business, they have margins built into their budgets to cover refunds, damages, and missing items.

I had this - except one very tall wardrobe door from Ikea! The delivery guys left the replacement and ran off as they didn’t want to take a return on the van. I called Ikea to arrange for it to be picked up and they said to donate it to charity 🤣 It’s still standing in my tiny hall months later - what do I do with it?
