I’m 26 with a 10 year old, but when I was 10 my mother was 50. Feels very strange, I remember being my son’s age and very aware my mother was way older than the other mothers.

I was 32 when mine was 10 (many years ago, now a fully grown adult!) and my mother was also 32 when I was 10.

It’s definitely location dependent. Where I live (major American city), no one has children before 30 (most people wait until after 35) and absolutely no one becomes a grandparent before 60.

What….not one single person?….like ever? 🙄

Mrsclausemunchingonamincepie · 31/12/2025 16:07

At 10 my dm was 31..
At 10 ds's dm was 53...

Dramatic · 31/12/2025 16:07

My Mam was 47 when I was 10, when my eldest was 10 I was 27.

Coffeeishot · 31/12/2025 16:08

Oh I was 37 when dc2 was 10.

marypoppinsreturns · 31/12/2025 16:09

I was 50, my mum was 29. I would have preferred to have been younger but becoming a parent wasn’t easy for me.

Well not ever, obviously! I’m talking about people in their 40s and 50s now - I haven’t come across a single person in this age bracket who is a grandparent. If I went back 50 or 100 years I’m sure that wouldn’t be the case.

CandiedPrincess · 31/12/2025 16:11

My mum was 36 when I was 10, as I was with my own DD. However I have another and I will be 50 when that one is 10.

At 36 my mum lived the life of a 70 year old, I look back and think what on earth was she doing? She was so "old".

tessiegirl · 31/12/2025 16:13

I’m 42, my mum was 23

AnonSugar · 31/12/2025 16:14

I’m 37 with a 10 yo. My mum was 33.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 31/12/2025 16:15

38 with my first 10 year old, 45 with my 2nd (current) my DM was 39, she was married at 19, so her first child was born at 20.
26 is very young to have a 10 year old. I know a few ladies who had babies at 16, it is the opposite side of the spectrum and probably more harshly judged than an older mam.
There is a middle ground.

Most ( not all) of my friends became grannies late 40s/ early 50s…I was a granny at 50 so now 60 I have a 10 year old GC ( plus several younger ones)….you don’t get to decide when you become a Granny , but I’ve loved having fun with mine these last 10 years taking them camping, to festivals, trips to London, bike riding…..not sure I would manage that in my 70s but maybe 🤷‍♀️

But you must have realised when you had him at 16 that you were much younger than most other women having babies?

from the age of 10 I was reading my parents newspapers/magazines while eating cereal and stuff which had me thinking there were loads of 12/13/14 year old mothers. I didn’t realise the reason such things are in the news is because they’re so unusual and rare until after I’d gotten pregnant young myself and had all the rude comments and stares from strangers

When DD was 10, I was 29.
When I was 10, my mother was 34.

At DD's primary there was a huge spectrum, some of us were early twenties at the start of reception, others in their mid-late forties.

YouBelongWithMe · 31/12/2025 16:21

There's a family pattern of having the firstborn aged 20 in my family...

So I was 30 when he was 10, my mum was also 30 when I was 10 and same goes for my granny.

It will stop in 2027 when my son turns 20!

niki26 · 31/12/2025 16:22

I’m 43 with a 10 year old. My mum was 33 when I was 10.

When I am the age my mother was when she had me my son will be 24 which is only 2 years younger than I am now. He doesn’t seem aware yet but I remember learning most my friends mums were ten or even twenty years younger than mine and being a little jealous

I’m interested to hear why it made a difference to you and do you think it would have been the same if you noticed your dad was much older than the other dads?

Lastly, were you 10 when you began noticing or much younger? Did friends comment?

FranticFrankie · 31/12/2025 16:23

My mum was 40 when I was 10- I thought she was really old 😮

Chainy · 31/12/2025 16:26

My mum was 40. I will be 48 when my youngest turns 10. Was 38 with my oldest.

Bboy1234 · 31/12/2025 16:28

I was 42 when my eldest son was 10, I will be 45 when my youngest turns 10
When I was 10 my mum was 27

I’m in SE. My sister was 26 with a 10 year old and 8 year old and became a granny at 39 😬

Myself 39 with 10 year old and 7 year old. Hoping not to be a granny until I’m 60.

Uptightmumma · 31/12/2025 16:30

I am 41 with a 10 year old
my mum was 31 when I was 10.

I suppose for you! You were extremely young when you had your sons and your mum was an “older” mum. So the difference probably feels greater

Fifthtimelucky · 31/12/2025 16:30

When my younger daughter was 10, I was 48.
When my youngest sibling was 10 my mother was 49.

She had her first child at 32 and her last at 39 (in the 1960s). I had my first at 35 and last at 38 (in the 1990s). The main difference is that she had 4 and I just had 2.

Going back a generation my two grandmothers were
29 and 31 when they had their first children and 34 and 35 when they had their last (all born in the 1920s).
