To ask if you know anyone over 60 who doesn't insist on their coffee being hotter than the sun

I know this is a crass generalisation but I actually don't
.

No idea. Wouldn't dream of socialising with someone over 60. I've tried it with one or two of them. One had very dull conversation and the other had an unpleasant dog. So naturally I've concluded that every single person in this age group will be boring with an objectionable pet.

What a mean spirited comment

Oh I hate when out for dinner, the older generation start bleating at ne to start eating before it gets cold. I get sick of saying I'm letting it cool.

Charming.
we grew up in cold houses where it was important to heat the food and heat the plates. We like our food hot. Who wants to eat a cool dinner?

Twinkylightsg · 29/12/2025 11:55

In my 30s. Love it boiling hot. Mum in her 70s likes it with cold milk all her life so not boiling.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/12/2025 11:56

@Sharptonguedwoman Me, and I'm 65. I detest food that's too hot to taste and savour. Neither did I grow up in a cold house.

Ok, fair enough.

Hankunamatata · 29/12/2025 11:59

My parents but they only drink latte or cappuccino.
Prob generation used to instant, boiling water, splash of milk

What a moo you must be.

Does anyone under the age of 60 have a sense of humour?

Or anyone over the age of 60?

My Mum is 91 and would have laughed at this.

But she has no pets

Very good point. I met one that had a bobble hat, so do they all have bobble hats as well?

Me. I do. I like my food pretty much at room temperature so I can enjoy it without burning myself.

genesis92 · 29/12/2025 12:04

Well I am under 35 and like my coffee hotter than the sun 😁

CrystalSingerFan · 29/12/2025 12:04

I've just come back from a cruise with my 81 year old friends. Breakfast buffet, first thing husband does is get a black coffee, bring it back to the table and wander off to get a plate of food, (This takes a while, especially if he's getting individually cooked eggs.) Comes back. Coffee is well cool.

What IS the point of non-hot coffee? (I'm over 60.)

FollowSpot · 29/12/2025 12:05

I am over 60 and very fussy about optimum coffee temperature for the perfect cafitiere brew.

But did buy a lethally hot Greggs Steak Bake at an unscheduled * motorway stop yesterday. And had to wave it out of the car window in the freezing wind to cool it down.

*Obviously. Because for a planned stop I would have had a flask of boiling tea, a massive foil wrapped pack of ham sandwiches and a slice of Battenberg. (Even though I don’t like tea)

ParmaVioletTea · 29/12/2025 12:06

Me.

But YABU and unpleasant. Ageism is never a good look.

Room temperature would’ve about 20deg surely?
Obviously we are all different but personally I like my food to be warmer than than that.

ilovepixie · 29/12/2025 12:07

Coffee from a coffee shop is always just warm. I think they do it so you drink it in one go and then buy another one 😂😂

APatternGrammar · 29/12/2025 12:08

If you hit the exactly right point scalding tea is invigorating and the taste is acccentuated, don’t knock it until you try it. I tried it in my 20s when I noticed older relatives doing it and realised they were on to something.

ParmaVioletTea · 29/12/2025 12:08

5128gap · 29/12/2025 11:45

Chin up. It doesn't last long. The years fly and before you know it the boots on the other foot and younger people will be laughing at how you eat and getting irritated by your 'bleating'.

Well, the alternative is worse, isn’t it?

DappledThings · 29/12/2025 12:08

Yep, that would be fine for me. Warmer fine as well but anything where there is steam coming off it is going to amnoy me by needing a good 10-15 minutes sitting to be edible.

Inthewrongtimezone · 29/12/2025 12:09

Yes, me! I take my coffee black. I always carry a small bottle of water, so I can add cold water to coffee to cool it down a bit and make it marginally drinkable (especially in fast food places, where the coffee is ridiculously hot). I'm in my late sixties and have never liked scalding hot coffee.

I don't have a dog ... but would I find your conversation boring??

I've just bought myself one of those tiny hotplates for keeping your drink hot 😄

BadgernTheGarden · 29/12/2025 12:10

Me, I don't like anything too hot, or too cold. I leave red hot drinks to cool down and ice cold drinks to warm up a bit.

Well spotted. They wear them all year round because they want their heads to be hotter than the sun.

You might enjoy eating out in Crete, in that case. A lot of tavernas don't serve piping hot food but wait till it's cooled a little before bringing it to the table. I think that's what Greeks traditionally do.

Is there a particular reason why you don't just ask the server for some cold water?

JamesClyman · 29/12/2025 12:15

Me.
