To ask if you know anyone over 60 who doesn't insist on their coffee being hotter than the sun

I know this is a crass generalisation but I actually don't
.

OP posts:

I'm 65 and don't like drinks to be too hot. Or food for that matter.

What an agist thread however. Had @Pavementworrier written "do any of you know [insert something relating to a protected characteristic] who always [insert something most people would find uncomfortable]" they would be banned by now.

It's as pisstakey as humorous and therefore not appropriate.

It would have been better to write "do you know anyone who doesn't like their drinks hotter than the sun" Imagine what the reaction would be if you had replaced over 60 with gay, or Muslim, or wheelchair users.

It's extraordinary, the extent to which this site allows ageism.

My mum

She likes it about 40% milk from the fridge so she can drink it immediately

But never drinks the last mouthful annoyingly

I grew up in a household with loose leaf tea but no tea strainer. I still leave the last mouthful as it is full of tea leaves. And I even do that with coffee.

Anyway, the mantra for me and my fellow work colleague in her 60s was always- I like my hot drinks hot and my cold drinks cold.

I did ask mum about that. She never had tea leaves in a cup growing up. It's just a habit she's picked up.

It's not an issue unless one of the cats decides to knock her mug off the coffee table.

thornbury · 29/12/2025 10:45

DH is 61. Everything has to be hotter than the sun and he has sent back countless restaurants meals for being insufficiently hot. This is not new, though, I have known him for over 15 years.

What a moo you must be.

I expect its my age.

MrsToothyBitch · 29/12/2025 10:50

Yes!!! My 60+ mum isn't a coffee drinker but likes her tea v hot - I like mine warm but cooler than she does; DM (and my mid 30s DH, tbf) will be well through a mug before it's drinkable for me, also mid 30s! I like all hot drinks pretty mild by most peoples standards though, I think.

Mum also likes really really hot soup. I can't eat mother-cooked-soup immediately without burning my poor tongue on her molten offerings. I'm a fast eater but she'll reliably finish soup before me and marvel at my slow progress; I have to wait for it to cool considerably to be able to eat it. She also likes warmed plates and gets annoyed if food is not served on a warmed plate. Sound in theory but in practice her plates are too hot to handle without oven gloves by the time she has got them where she wants them. I can't eat an oven pizza at her house if I'm in short sleeves; you can't slice it ready on your plate before eating without hurting your forearms as you slice.

WonderingWanda · 29/12/2025 10:51

There is nothing worse than when you go somewhere and get a latte where the milk tastes boiled....seems to be common in more old fashioned independent establishments so I suspect it is more of an old fashioned thing.

OrangeAxolotyl · 29/12/2025 10:53

DappledThings · 29/12/2025 10:33

I love lukewarm soup! I deliberately only heat soup to lukewarm.

There we are. We're all different.
Live and let live.

HeadyLamarr · 29/12/2025 10:54

My dad is 83, and he drinks his daily vat of coffee anything from hot to room temperature. He doesn't care as long as it's got caffeine.

I'm with the 'hot, please' people, personally.

AttachmentFTW · 29/12/2025 10:54

My parents insist on serving tea hotter than the sun. They pre-heat the mugs and use a tea cosy while it's brewing to maintain the heat. If you don't drink it immediately (for fear of 3rd degree burns) they look so offended and confused.

They're trying to ensure your mouth is permanently scalded so that you can't complain when you find out they've spent your inheritance.

Why does it matter. What a stupid thread. You could easily say as snobbery as the OP. Why does everyone understand 60 drink tepid coffee.?
Yet another I will never be old thread.

It doesn’t matter but people have made an observation and are discussing it, they’re not saying OAPs should be put down because they like hot coffee. It’s lighthearted. Can you not take a joke?

ColinOfficeTrolley · 29/12/2025 11:12

Pavementworrier · 29/12/2025 10:37

You have a heavy-going nature.

I really don't. I just can't bear ageism being passed off as a 'oh aren't all old people stupid because 5 of them that I know, do something different to me'

I'm actually a delight.

Lotsandlotsandlotsoffun · 29/12/2025 11:13

Im over 60 and I definitely do not like too hot coffee/tea. My mum on the other hand did. Its actually not good for you and there has been some research on this. I would discourage it as much as you can.

marilyntaylor · 29/12/2025 11:14

I can’t drink very hot coffee. I’m 65.

Yes. OPs second post "I tried to explain to them...but they just look blank". Stupid older people drinking coffee wrong and not having the wit to understand, even when a clever younger person explains to them.

CocksBolingey · 29/12/2025 11:23

I think it’s one of those things where you are one way or the other. I’m only 42 but love my food and hot drinks piping, whereas my 47 year old husband will happily leave his dinner for 20 minutes to cool down and doesn’t care for his hot drinks to be hotter than lukewarm! Takes all sorts, I guess! 😀

intrepidpanda · 29/12/2025 11:34

Oh I hate when out for dinner, the older generation start bleating at ne to start eating before it gets cold. I get sick of saying I'm letting it cool.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 29/12/2025 11:36

I’m 60 and can’t eat or drink anything too hot, I always add a bit of cold water to tea and coffee before I add the milk as I only like a dash of milk .

Mintearo7 · 29/12/2025 11:39

My parents heat up mugs in the microwave before they add boiling water. Have to wait 20 minutes a before I even touch it.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 29/12/2025 11:42

Pavementworrier · 29/12/2025 09:43

Yes, explaining how best to experience something is fairly normal.

Bet they’re so glad they had you to explain to them how they’ve been taking their drinks wrongly all these years 🙄

What a load of ageist twaddle.

Chin up. It doesn't last long. The years fly and before you know it the boots on the other foot and younger people will be laughing at how you eat and getting irritated by your 'bleating'.

Nannyfannybanny · 29/12/2025 11:47

75, with a hiatus hernia and oesophagitis caused by acid,so I have to drink/eat, slowly, carefully DH 68 drinks his scalding, frequently burned his mouth and regrets it..I can't even pick up the cup in a lot of places it's so hot! (Arthritis and wrist damage, I need 2 hands) I have a friend 60 this year, she drinks it straight out of the kettle into the cup. She did burn her top lip and under her nose really badly a couple of years ago. Her tea is revolting, I like to actually taste tea.

Sharptonguedwoman · 29/12/2025 11:48

Over 60 and have worked in a coffee shop. If you’re talking ground coffee, too hot and it burns and is horrible. Lattes etc are always a little cool for me. I don’t want a gently warm drink, I want a hot one. Don’t like instant coffee but my mum used to make it at blood heat. Vile. She was 80 or so at the time.

Nevereatcardboard · 29/12/2025 11:51

I’m in my 60s and meet up with a group of friends who are all over 60 for lunch regularly. I don’t think anyone has ever insisted on their coffee or tea being extra hot. We all just order what we want and drink it, preferably with a nice biscuit or cake 😊
