To ask if you know anyone over 60 who doesn't insist on their coffee being hotter than the sun

I know this is a crass generalisation but I actually don't

This made me laugh.
My mum (70) is only satisfied when it's hotter than the sun. She'll make me one at the same time, and she'll be finished drinking hers, when I'm barely a quarter down. Her mouth is built different, I swear.

I take an older lady out for coffee every so often. I'll always go and order while she sits down. She always asks for her coffee to be made "extra hot". I mean, the people in the cafe are somewhat limited by the thermodynamic properties of water anyway, so it can only be so hot.
Eventually, I stopped asking for the "extra hot" - it just felt a bit wanky - and my friend has never once noticed or commented on it not being hot enough.

My mum very particular about things that are meant to be hot being hot
I still shudder about time in a naice London hotel we went to for lunch when she sent the soup back 3 times as it was not hot to her standard.

I am totally the opposite (probably due to her) happy with warmish soup and leave my tea (black with sugar) to get cool before I drink it

Why did you shudder? Why shouldn’t she have her soup the way she likes it?

Well spotted. They wear them all year round because they want their heads to be hotter than the sun.

Ah! I knew it. That explains the enormous coats as well (I mean, I only saw one person over 60 with an enormous coat, but that means they all have them, right?).

ProfessorRizz · 29/12/2025 12:19

YANBU to use the phrase ‘hotter than the sun’ (Lynn!). We use it every day in our house.

YABU because I am only 50% sure I understand your question: you’re saying that OAPs take their coffee at a higher temperature than the rest of us?

I heard this conversation between a woman about my age and a teenage-ish barista the other day:
"A latte with hot milk please"
"Oat milk?"
"No, hot milk"
"Oat milk?"
"Hot milk!"
"....so you just want a latte?"
"With hot milk..."

I once asked for an Americano with hot milk and the barista kept asking me if I wanted it black or white? I didn’t understand the question. So I kept asking for an Americano with hot milk but after a stalemate, I ended up saying to give me an Americano, which is black, then add hot milk, so it becomes white.

You might enjoy eating out in Crete, in that case. A lot of tavernas don't serve piping hot food but wait till it's cooled a little before bringing it to the table. I think that's what Greeks traditionally do.

I do indeed very much enjoyed Greek food for that reason!

randomchap · 29/12/2025 09:26

My mum

She likes it about 40% milk from the fridge so she can drink it immediately

But never drinks the last mouthful annoyingly

Two of my colleagues do this (late 50s). Always leave the last mouthful. I was curious and they both don't know why they do it!

Why did you write this?

Irony about generalising. I thought it was witty.

LongDarkTeatime · 29/12/2025 12:32

I’m well under 60 and like hot drinks to be hot. It allows for slow enjoyment, and maybe time to chat, rather than immediate drinking to get it finished before it goes cold.

It’s really annoying when people serve ‘hot’ food on cold plates so it arrives Luke warm and rapidly goes cold too.

Of course. I've seen several people over 60 wearing big coats this week myself. No idea why.

Allmarbleslost · 29/12/2025 12:35

I'm like this and I'm only 45!

illsendansostotheworld · 29/12/2025 12:37

49 and always order my latte extra hot - who likes lukewarm coffee?? Not me but didn't realise it is an age thing!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 29/12/2025 12:41

My husband. He thinks im a weirdo for having an asbestos mouth. This isnt a post 60s thing BTW, I grew up drinking black tea very hot. When Starbucks first arrived id take my coffee back everytime because it was clock cold.

StrawberrySquash · 29/12/2025 12:42

My mum! Normal temperature, in her 70s.

Pat on the back for taking an “older lady” out. I’m sure she loves a little outing.

Sharptonguedwoman · 29/12/2025 11:52

Charming.
we grew up in cold houses where it was important to heat the food and heat the plates. We like our food hot. Who wants to eat a cool dinner?

Me, after a piece of peperoni flipped forward off a slice I was about to eat at pizza express, slapped me on the lip and burnt me painfully, leaving a blister. Meal did seem a bit hotter than usual but I'd had it a few minutes / it wasn't straight out the kitchen. I'm very ginger about biting in now.

How completely mysterious! Yes, everyone under 60 I’ve seen has been wearing vest tops in this 5-degree weather. Aren’t pensioners so strange and funny like that!

Huh, thanks for that nasty little reply.

I volunteer for Age UK, met this lady at an organised Christmas lunch through the charity about 4-5 years ago. We got to chatting, she'd not long since lost her husband, we had things in common. She's 95 now and lives in a care home. Her DD predeceased her and she's got no relations close by. I'm 41, so I don't think referring to her as an "older lady" is wrong. She's 54 years my senior!

Please tell me what you're doing different/better.

Here was me just thinking it was a funny little thread about hot drinks... Jesus take the wheel.

Svolvaer · 29/12/2025 12:53

I’m 71 and my preferred temperature for everything, food and drink, is tepid. Nothing extremely hot, nothing properly cold, no ice in drinks. Tepid!

MermaidMummy06 · 29/12/2025 12:54

I thought it was just my DM! She always asks for it extra hot & complains it's lukewarm. If I make her one at home, I froth the milk to the hottest temp possible without burning the milk. She still puts it the microwave!!

I often wonder how she doesn't burn the inside of her mouth, but she drinks it so quickly I guess it doesn't get a chance!

It's not a cold climate here & is often hotter than the sun, so definitely not trying to keep warm.

Ketzele · 29/12/2025 12:54

Me. I drink it lukewarm.

RaininSummer · 29/12/2025 12:54

I like my hot drinks hot. Cafe drinks seem to be tepid normally.

Not just OAPs. She's including anyone over 60, so that includes many people still working full-time. Many of them in challenging jobs, as well! No blank staring.

thejadefish · 29/12/2025 12:55

My mum (75) makes hers then leaves it to cool down to room temperature before drinking it usually. I'm guessing she got used to drinking it cold due to never having time to drink it whilst hot when younger but she's been retired 10 years and still does it now so I guess she likes it like that.

TheWytch · 29/12/2025 12:56

I've always drunk mine very hot. Nothing nastier than tepid tea and coffee
