I know this is a crass generalisation but I actually don't

@Anewuser ‘gruts’ I have never heard that quaint word it must be regional

CurlewKate · 29/12/2025 10:02

Another day another new take on ageism….

Thunderdcc · 29/12/2025 10:04

Is this specifically a coffee question? I don't drink tea or coffee but always find it bizarre how coffee shops serve tepid hot chocolate. Clue is in the name, I want it properly hot. I feel the same way about food, if it is meant to be hot I like to eat it that way not wait for it to be weirdly room temperature.

Ponoka7 · 29/12/2025 10:04

I'm nearly 60, I've gone the other way. Hot food/drink gives me acid reflux, so I leave my coffee to go tepid and even cold. If I need to buy a bottled drink when out, I'll go for cold coffee. Usual temperature is the norm in my friendship group (57- 72).

Mxflamingnoravera · 29/12/2025 10:05

@5128gap
I thought your message was amusing. I’m 64 and love my drinks extra hot.
I assume anyone who likes their hot drinks tepid are still children and need a biccie or a bag of Pom bears with them too. 😆

luckylavender · 29/12/2025 10:05

I like it to be scalding to start with but drink it when it’s a little cooler. I’m 63.

KnickerlessParsons · 29/12/2025 10:05

The not drinking the last mouthful thing is a hangover from before teabags were invented and you used to get tea leaves in the bottom of your cuppa

It has taken me years to train my mum so she remembers if we order coffee in a cafe and I need to then go to the loo not to put the saucer on top of it to trap the heat as I would prefer it has a chance to cool down. And I can then add cold milk.

I remember to put the saucer on top for her if she needs to go elsewhere.

If I'm with MIL I've usually barely been able to start mine, with added cold milk, and she's finished her black one. DH is somewhere in the middle.

A standard Americano with cold milk is still perfectly palatable to me up to half an hour.

I’ve always been fascinated by this in period novels — in Dorothy L Sayers novels, characters are always covering one another’s cups of coffee with saucers for quite long periods, or making coffee in a saucepan and putting it down by the hearth ‘to keep warm’, also for indefinite periods. I’m clearly far too keen on properly hot coffee for the DLS universe.

Bjorkdidit · 29/12/2025 10:07

Well I'm nowhere near 60 and I like hot drinks to be hot, the clue is in the name.

If they've cooled, they're undrinkable, so if you run a cafe and 95% of your customers are asking for their drinks extra hot, obviously you're not serving them hot enough.

It should also be illegal to serve ready to eat food like salads, sandwiches and cakes at fridge temperature as that too is revolting.

tripleginandtonic · 29/12/2025 10:09

I'm not but I like my coffee to be scalding.

Lamentingalways · 29/12/2025 10:09

Haha I hit 40 and decided I would no longer drink hot drinks that weren’t actually hot. On Christmas Day I was served a coffee with hot milk, it stayed hot for 15 minutes and it made my day 🙈 the waiter got a big tip from me that day (he had also gone above and beyond for my son). Someone did tell me it scorches the coffee if it’s too hot so I don’t complain when I’m out paying a lot for a drink because I trust that they know best.

Is it a woman / mother thing? Maybe we’ve had enough of everything we eat being tepid and out drinks being warm etc because we serve everyone else 1st?

Firmly in the burn my mouth hot drink category 😂

NecklessMumster · 29/12/2025 10:11

Me. Over 60 and dont want scalding hot. We're not all the same

DappledThings · 29/12/2025 10:12

I like pretty much everything room temperature. Definitely drinks. I don't like ice in drinks or keep any soft drinks in the fridge.

I'd keep a beer in thr fridge or white wine but I wouldn't be bothered if they'd not been in long.

Same with food. If it's really hot I can't taste anything except hot. Things like soup I only heat up enough to take the edge off. Not till they are properly hot.

LoveSandbanks · 29/12/2025 10:12

I’m mid 50’s and already like it hotter than the sun. Never been ahead of the curve before …

Ellie56 · 29/12/2025 10:13

I'm over 60. I don't like coffee so I don't really care whether it's boiling hot or not. Next.

OrangeAxolotyl · 29/12/2025 10:13

Those pesky over 60s! What are they up to now? What fresh way have they found to be irritating?
note: I am 66 and my coffee is a reasonable temperature.
Now I'm going to have to find a different way to annoy my children.

Lamentingalways · 29/12/2025 10:14

MathsandStats · 29/12/2025 09:50

No, that's being really patronising. Just because you experience it better your way doesn't mean others do. You prioritise taste, others prioritise temperature.

Exactly that. It’s one thing to mention that it’s what a barista recommends but after that ‘Let it go, let it go 🎶’

Missmarplesknittingbuddy · 29/12/2025 09:32

I am over 60 and if it doesn't strip the skin from the roof of my mouth it needs reheating . When my DCs serve me nasty tepid liquid it goes straight into the microwave . 😀

Is it because you don’t actually like coffee and need the heat to disguise the taste?

Because I cannot fathom why anyone would want a drink so hot it hurts.

Noominia · 29/12/2025 10:15

I reckon it’s because our generation is way busier and more productive than younger people so we like our coffee to start hot so that we have time to finish whatever we’re doing and drink it without it going cold.

DappledThings · 29/12/2025 10:15

DH made me a cup of tea about 7 minutes ago. I'll give it another 5 and test it. Might have cooled down enough by then.

5128gap · 29/12/2025 09:33

No idea. Wouldn't dream of socialising with someone over 60. I've tried it with one or two of them. One had very dull conversation and the other had an unpleasant dog. So naturally I've concluded that every single person in this age group will be boring with an objectionable pet.

Ah, we must have met! I am very dull and have an incredibly objectionable dog. I also like my tea at supernova temperature.

I don't actually like coffee very much at all though.

Missmarplesknittingbuddy · 29/12/2025 10:15

5128gap · 29/12/2025 09:59

Sadly not. I have another 4 years before I reach the age of entitlement to one, so I haven't yet done my research.

Ah never mind . Maybe I will get a normal pet and just teach it some objectionable habits.

Wow! Another ageist "I will never be young post" on Mumsnet 😜

Fwiw, me own mum loves black coffee made with instant coffee. She grew up, and indeed grew old with it. We've introduced her to 'better' coffee. But she clearly still prefers a Nescafé or even supermarket instant. She's 80 plus and knows what she likes and that's ok.

That's ok. (Well. Like just about I guess. I mean come on ma this one has cream and was made with freshly roasted and ground beans and the water temperature was carefully chosen so as not extract those bitter tannins you probably actually prefer. /s )

It's like you know me (and my DH!) 😂

HappyFace2025 · 29/12/2025 10:17

I'm 77 and I like my drinks including coffee to be hot not boiling. I've been known to ask for an americano to be topped up with cold water.
