Yes there are such things as accidental pregnancies

I am getting increasingly frustrated with this on a site which is supposed to support mums and women. Someone will post for advice relating to an accidental pregnancy, and you can pretty much guarantee within the first 2 pages some prick will come along and ask "well how did it happen?". Errr quite frankly its none of your business and doesn't really relate to what the OP is asking.

It is judgemental, unhelpful and none of you bloody business. There are plenty of reasons birth control fails. Actually when you look at developments in BC effectiveness hasn't really changed for decades- availability and impact on pleasure has, but not effectiveness.

The reckon 50% of births globally are accidental pregnancies, and in the UK and UK that number is still 40-50%

When your doctor tells you about effectiveness rates, that is for one off encounters, the way the % compound over time means the failure rate is actually quite staggering, as illustrated here. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/09/14/sunday-review/unplanned-pregnancies.html

I dont think this perpetuation of these myths that unplanned pregnancies must be "someones fault", and us as women allowing these judgemental comments to go unchecked on this site is in anyway helpful.

I'm always a bit 😑over stats, because they're only as true as the answers given and people tend to be a bit cute with the truth when it comes to how well they use contraception or not.

If using multiple forms of contraception how can accidents happen?

For the many reasons already outlined on this thread? No form of contraception is 100%. I've had multiple accidental pregnancies involving various types of contraception, including one where I had a copper IUD, was on the pill and was using condoms (with no condom tears, missed pills and IUD in the right place). Luckily we have safe access to termination in this country, so the only child I have was actively wanted.

SEmyarse · 27/12/2025 13:20

I'm just so jealous of those who have always had good experiences with contraception. All of the problems with anything hormonal, plus the life trauma of unplanned pregnancies, and then topped off by DH's vasectomy causing long term pain. Genuinely life ruining.

ZoeCM · 28/12/2025 21:29

I've posted this before, but surely the current generation of royals prove that if you're really determined to avoid pregnancy, you can? William, Eugenie and Zara were all with their spouses for eight to ten years before marrying them. Harry was with Chelsy Davey for seven years. Beatrice was with her ex for ten years.

The royals are among the very last members of society for whom "illegitimate" pregnancy would be somewhat scandalous (and would exclude children from of the line of succession). They all managed to avoid pregnancy in their twenties, which is when fertility peaks. And they must all be pretty fertile, because they all conceived quickly after marrying in their thirties. Unless the royal abortionist was working overtime for years, it seems that contraception is very effective.

KarmenPQZ · 28/12/2025 21:38

I think using the term ‘accidental’ is a massive misnomer. ’Unplanned’ is way more accurate as you weren’t trying to get pregnant but at the same time you weren’t doing your best to minimise the risk.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 28/12/2025 21:40

I know 2 women who are pregnant right now with mirena coils in situ.

You can't explain this to people who don't experience passion

Thoseslippers · 29/12/2025 00:10

As someone who has fallen pregnant whilst using contraception TWICE and it was different forms of contraception as well.. first time was condom then the second time was the pill.. and the condom pregnancy, the condom split so I took the MAP literally a couple of hours later... still fell pregnant.
I totally agree with you.
My DH has had a vasectomy now but I still use contraception on top of that due to our suprise pregnancy with our third.
I'm just really fertile. Or we are together.
So I can well see that some people do end up having multiple accidental pregnancies.
Just as some people got away with having unprotected sex right left and centre in their early adulthood but you'll find them acting superior about anyone who ends up pregnant as though it wasn't just luck they didn't fall pregnant themselves.

When I had my accidentally 3rd and was struggling I did post on here and got all the awful "well you should have thought of that!" So unhelpful. Just smug nonsense

Surely if you know you experience passion, you use some form of long-acting contraception and/or carry your own condoms, making those decisions when you're not in the throes of passion?

Littlejellyuk · 29/12/2025 00:59

Chiseltip · 26/12/2025 17:04

You can't get pregnant accidentally. You have to have sex first. And you can't do that "accidentally".

HTH

I'm so glad I googled HTH and found it it means Hope This Helps!!!

At first glance I thought it meant a HIDE THE HOLE 😆 🤣 😂
Which would also help 😆
Sorry for being a fool with the humour 🤪

I also got pregnant, as antibiotics affected my pill and I didn't realise!.🤦🏻‍♀️
Trust me it happens. 🫠

Getting pregnant without having sex?

😆 🤣 😂
No queen. Lighten up.
I had no immaculate conception.
My name isn't Mary..and my sons birthday wasn't on the 25th December. 😆

sittingonabeach · 29/12/2025 01:23

Isn’t it pretty well known that medication and/or sickness can impact the effectiveness of the pill, so if not abstaining or using other form of contraception in that time is pretty careless

OlympicProcrastinator · 29/12/2025 01:39

Gallivant · 26/12/2025 17:10

..which is why access to the morning after pill and safe, legal abortion is such a blessing for women who don't want to have children.

Accidental pregnancy - perhaps. Accidentally bearing a child? Nope.

I became pregnant while using the depo shot properly. I bled throughout my pregnancy and had an anterior placenta which hid my pregnancy until i started showing at 20 weeks. I had no choice but to go ahead with that pregnancy. And no, you cannot just go ahead and get a termination easily at that stage despite it technically being legal.

As if you’d know if they had a termination

sittingonabeach · 29/12/2025 01:46

I think a lot of people question accidental pregnancies when you get posts from people saying they are struggling with the DC they have or DH is a shit, or they have no money or live in a one bedroomed flat and they are ‘accidentally’ pregnant with DC4. Surely in those circumstances you would be doing everything in your power not to get pregnant. And there are many posts about accidental pregnancies on here which must go against the statistics of proper use of contraceptives.

peoplewatchingonthewaybackhome · 26/12/2025 17:07

I think that birth control failing if used correctly is very, very unlikely. If you’re not using it correctly you are pretty much actively trying.

I was on the pill, using condoms and had been told I dos not produce viable eggs to pregnancy without ivf "couldn't happen" according to my gynaecologist.

I wasn't made aware and the info leaflet didnt mention that the morphine patches i was on could mess with my pill and I am guessing the condom split without us realising as I have a 12 year old.

We weren't trying, we were using everything available and I still ended up pregnant.

Accidenta can and do happen.

HTH

LemaxObsessive · 29/12/2025 02:22

Completely agree. My DD was born as a result of the injection failing AND condom splitting. Astronomical odds beaten but 🤷🏼‍♀️

Doing your best to 'minimise the risk' is not having sex.

That’s eliminating risk not minimising

There is always the morning after Pill.

Having had a coil fitted AND used condoms, I did not think it was going to be necessary to take the morning after pill.

I have now only had sex a handful of times in the last 25 years, due to the terror of getting pregnant again. And DH is stuck with long term ball pain due to his vasectomy. I feel really crap that not only do the majority of people get to have a relatively carefree sex life, but everyone also thinks I'm hopelessly irresponsible.

Redpeach · 29/12/2025 03:24

The morning after pill doesnt always work

What happened, did the medication make you have sex?
