People who have never heard of bread sauce?

Sent a photo of my Christmas dinner to a friend. She asked what the white stuff was and whether it was horseradish.

I said 'No, bread sauce.'

She said she had never heard of it. Asked her family and they had never heard of it either.

Wonder it's a regional thing? Her family are from Somerset but also some from Lancashire. My partner is Welsh and never heard of it either. I'm from the Midlands.

I thought it was fairly universal? Dependent on preference ofc.

YABU - I've not heard of bread sauce /it's not a common thing.
YANBU - of course I've heard of it

Had it once, invited for Sunday lunch and there had been much talk of the cook’s famous family recipe bread sauce, how much they loved it. My children were appalled by it but politely pushed it around their plates, my husband ate some and feigned enthusiasm, as did I.

It must be one of those things that you love it if you grow up with it.

A piece of turkey, a bit of stuffing and a bit of roast potato on your fork with bread sauce over the top is Christmas in a mouthful as far as I’m concerned. I look forward to it every year. YANBU

I never heard of it until I was in my late 20s - tried it once when SIL served it - essentially wet bread in milk 🤮 I wasn’t keen. I haven’t crossed paths with it again. (West Coast Scotland)

ilovepixie · 25/12/2025 18:16

I’ve heard it it. I don’t like it though.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 25/12/2025 18:16

I hadn’t heard of it until I was in my 20’s. I’ve still never tried it.

frockandcrocs · 25/12/2025 18:17

SW here: bloody love it.

Just me and DSis that like it, and this year we sat opposite each other rather than opposite ends of the table, it made sharing the jug so much easier 🤣

bugalugs45 · 25/12/2025 18:17

I’ve heard of it , but never actually tried it !

wornoutjeans · 25/12/2025 18:18

Heard of it but never seen it in real life I’m from Scotland

NigellaAwesome · 25/12/2025 18:18

From NI and we have always had it. It’s delicious, but for those talking about smothering their dinner in it, it’s not gravy consistency, more like porridge that is a distinct lump on the plate. I’m the only one who eats it, but we grew up with it and I couldn’t contemplate Christmas dinner without it. I’m so grateful that I got the recipe from my DM and wrote it down before she died.

Mydahliasareshit · 25/12/2025 18:19

I make it for DH but don't eat it myself. Wallpaper paste with a bit of nutmeg essentially.

I’ve honestly never had it with lumps. Nor is it remotely like vomit, ffs. What’s with these OTT fantasy descriptions? It’s not liquid with pieces of actual bread floating in it — it’s a very simple smooth, mild, delicately flavoured sauce Confused

I just Googled it and it looks decidedly lumpy/grainy in many of the pics.

Only2daystogo · 25/12/2025 18:20

I’m from working class NE area and have heard of it but never had it. It’s odd, we don’t make a sauce out of any other carb.

Plump82 · 25/12/2025 18:20

I'm West Coast of Scotland and Christmas dinner isn't Christmas dinner without bread sauce. My husband is from Edinburgh and him and his family hadn't heard of it before they met me. I think I'm the only one on both sides of the family that like it but I'm going against the grain in saying I only like packet bread sauce that you add milk to. Homemade or posh tubbed stuff is not for me!

Hedjwitch · 25/12/2025 18:21

I've heard of it but never had it. It looks very unappetising, like sludge.

Davros · 25/12/2025 18:21

We are Londoners and love it. M&S does a packet version all year round, it’s great with sausages.

Gardener82 · 25/12/2025 18:21

Christmas dinner would be ruined without bread sauce in my opinion. I went shopping with a friend the other day and she’d never heard of it.
She wanted me to explain what it tasted like which I found hard though!
I’m from London, she’s from Sussex.

Theslummymummy · 25/12/2025 16:56

I think it's a working class thing

Fuck off. Bread sauce is beautiful thing and is, or should be, beyond class...

TomatoSandwiches · 25/12/2025 18:22

It's a perfect bit of savory stodge, if you haven't tried it use Delia Smiths recipe as a starting place.

catsmother · 25/12/2025 18:23

Born and bred (bread!) in London and have always had bread sauce with all sorts of roasts though it's thought of as a poultry thing. It's so easy to make and tons better than out of a packet but would rather have that than not at all. Also happily have bread sauce with jacket potatoes and sausages, plus piccalilli. My son loves it too.

For those who've never tried, it's not just milky bread ... once it reduces and thickens, it becomes rich, creamy and savoury with hints of onion and cloves. You infuse the milk with clove studded onion but also add black peppercorns, bay leaves and a pinch of ground mace to this mixture. The milk's then strained, breadcrumbs mixed in and the sauce simmered with a good knob of butter added too.

I rarely ever have a roast in a pub or restaurant because bread sauce is hardly ever included yet for me it makes the meal. I specifically chose pheasant years ago in a restaurant simply because it was served with bread sauce!

zzplee · 25/12/2025 16:49

I've heard of it but have never seen it in real life.

Same here. I'm Scottish, I'e also heard of brandy butter but never had it.

YouAreTheCauseOfMyHeadache · 25/12/2025 18:23

When I was a kid my gran used to make me my own bowl of bread sauce as it was my favourite thing about Christmas dinner.
London !

Lol I don't think it's a bad thing

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 25/12/2025 18:29

Heard of it but never had it.
Is it a Southern thing?

ToWhitToWhoo · 25/12/2025 18:34

I'm from the South East, and have heard of it, but have never (I think) eaten it. Then again, I'm not a great sauce-eater in general.

AllWackedOffOfSantaSnacks · 25/12/2025 18:34

Always had it growing up, mother from Staffs. Always needed it too to provide moisture to her dried out cooking Grin

I love it but unfortunately all my children have become repulsed by it and it's very difficult to make in one person portions.
