People who have never heard of bread sauce?

Sent a photo of my Christmas dinner to a friend. She asked what the white stuff was and whether it was horseradish.

I said 'No, bread sauce.'

She said she had never heard of it. Asked her family and they had never heard of it either.

Wonder it's a regional thing? Her family are from Somerset but also some from Lancashire. My partner is Welsh and never heard of it either. I'm from the Midlands.

I thought it was fairly universal? Dependent on preference ofc.

YABU - I've not heard of bread sauce /it's not a common thing.
YANBU - of course I've heard of it

Scottish. Have heard of it but never seen it and can't imagine what purpose it has.

tilypu · 25/12/2025 19:00

I have heard of it, but I've never had it, and I think I was probably late twenties or early thirties that I first became aware of it. I'm working class Scottish.

I've heard of it but never tasted it.

I make it every year but I’ve never tasted it and I never will. The idea of it revolts me.

It doesn't taste predominantly of bread. It's an odd name. Like calling bechamel flour sauce, which no doubt many on this thread would take literally and refuse to eat.

Hmmm. Maybe I need to make some to work out what the fuss is about. Is it just served with Turkey or can it go with any roast?

xmasxmaself · 25/12/2025 19:02

Always had as part of Christmas Dinner as did DHs family. Mix of Welsh, Devon, Yorkshire and London.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 25/12/2025 19:02

My Mum made it in the 60's, and M&S has sold it for years.

Traditionally with poultry, I believe.

I eat that because it’s smooth. I’ll happily eat porridge so I’m not averse to texture but sauces should be smooth imo. Every photo of bread sauce looks lumpy and grainy and not at all appealing.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/12/2025 19:17

Porridge has a grainy texture because rolled oats or oatmeal don't go completely smooth. Breadcrumbs do.

Then why does it look decidedly lumpy/grainy in every single pic of it that I can find?

Cuwins · 25/12/2025 19:23

My favourite bit of Xmas dinner! My in-laws had never heard of it. One from Scotland and one SE England but both settled in SE for nearly 40 years!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/12/2025 19:24

Soft lumps. I'm not selling it, probably! Xmas Grin

No it’s sounding more and more like bread milk vomit 🫣

ScrambledEggs12 · 25/12/2025 19:27

Can't have Christmas dinner without bread sauce! So easy to make as well.

No but I appreciate your efforts and I’m not sure that anyone could sell it but perhaps I’ll try it one day if it’s available in a restaurant/carvery.

ScrambledEggs12 · 25/12/2025 19:30

Once I went to a carvery and covered my chicken in horseradish as I thought it was bread sauce ....

I did that too! Bloody decent carvery too. I was so upset because I love bread sauce but find horseradish overpowers a plate if you spoon it on abundantly.

Bread sauce seems to be a Christmas dinner turkey accompaniment for my family. North west.

Halsall · 25/12/2025 19:46

I know exactly what it is but we never had it growing up, though iirc my mum once made it to have with Christmas dinner, many many years ago - she loved it but DF wasn't keen. We never had it again and I've never had it since!

EBearhug · 25/12/2025 19:49

Grew up Dorset and I love decent bread sauce.

Sweat diced onion in butter, chuck in about 10 cloves and a grating of nutmeg. Can also I crude a bayleaf if you have one. Chuck in a load of milk (or cream if you're being posh) and then breadcrumbs. Possibly more milk if it's too thick. Fish out the cloves (many a childhood Sunday was spent trying to find the last one.) You can whizz it up with a hand blender if you want it smoother.

At uni, when I could extravagantly afford a chicken breast, I liked to poach it in the onion/cloves/nutmeg and add the breadcrumbs near the end to make it cooked in bread sauce.

We did not have breadsauce this year, with goose.

Evaka · 25/12/2025 19:51

Irish and DP's family have it at Xmas, his mum grew up in Birmingham. Turns my stomach and I generally eat anything.

Dagda · 25/12/2025 19:54

in Ireland and I make my own. I love it. I’d say most people have heard of it. They sell it everywhere anyway.

MurkyMo · 25/12/2025 19:56

Love bread sauce! I'm Irish

I’m from working class NE area and have heard of it but never had it. It’s odd, we don’t make a sauce out of any other carb.

You've never made a roux? Or gravy?

It's just a different way of introducing a starch to a liquid to create a sauce.
