Xmas day in PJs?

Ultravox · 24/12/2025 11:13

I read it on here quite a lot that people spend all of Xmas day in PJs. Each to their own and all that but I just can’t imagine it…I guess I could imagine it more if we got a takeaway for dinner but just can’t imagine cooking & eating a Xmas dinner in PJs! So am I in a minority? Is it normal?

Ours tends to be adults get dressed, jeans and a Christmas jumper, and the kids are in clean pjs. They are up and out almost every other day of the year (lots of sports on top of the usual school etc so don't even get lazy Sundays) so it's their pj day and they love the novelty.

Now that sounds like a fun Christmas!

Struggling to deal with the concept of strict guidelines and rules and lots of laughter here.

There is no chance everyone doing it wants to. I would find that hellish (and obviously refuse).

But each to their own

BauhausOfEliott · 24/12/2025 13:09

Yes, it’s normal to wear pyjamas. It’s also normal to dress up in your best clothes. It’s also normal to wear cosy jumpers or any other clothes.

What’s not normal is the amount of time, energy and sheer strength of feeling that half of Mumsnet seems to devote to when/where/how other people wear their fucking pyjamas. I swear to god there’s about three threads a week about pyjama habits and they’re always full of people getting really cross about the pyjamas of total strangers. It is mental that anyone gives a shit about this.

I wear a jeans-and-a-nice-top combo on Christmas Day but frankly, other people can spend the day dressed in pyjamas, wearing full evening dress or eating your dinner stark bollock naked for all I care; it doesn’t matter.

soccermum10 · 24/12/2025 13:11

We're having christmas dinner today so wouldn't bother me lol I usually wear some nice comfy lounge bottoms and a Xmas jumper 👍 Snug all the way 🥂

ChocolateCinderToffee · 24/12/2025 13:12

I wouldn't but if people want to do that, I suppose it's their choice.

TubeScreamer · 24/12/2025 13:16

Each to their own, but I wouldn’t enjoy doing this.

The competition has evolved over years - it’s judged by a number of different criteria - We wouldn’t do it if everyone didn’t enjoy it. It’s fun and much looked forward to.

Travel is the theme for this year’s competition. As none of us live in the UK, I’m classing a London themed pair as travel!

Xmas day in PJs?
Power26 · 24/12/2025 13:18

If I’m doing Christmas in PJs, it will be in expensive, specially bought, festive PJs. Not random, tatty old ones. So yeah, I’d think it’s totally fine to spend Christmas Day in a beautiful red silk PJ set or similar. It just looks like loungewear. Hardly different to wearing a co-ord “day” set.

Secondly, I’ve experienced Christmases where I have dressed up, full makeup and I prefer the more lowkey set up. It totally depends on who you’re spending Christmas with. But, I can imagine a young couple spending Christmas together in matching PJs. Equally I can totally imagine an entire family spending Christmas in matching PJs, that is literally a thing - many companies sell matching PJs for the entire family including pets…

Beyond that, personally I have an active social life, full time job, regularly wear nice dresses and makeup - Christmas Day is the one day I can chill without any pressure to do something or look fully glamorous. Hence why I prefer the low key setups, as my life is totally fulfilling in other areas and I don’t see Christmas as an occasion to dress to the nines.

TallulahBetty · 24/12/2025 11:53

It's not for me - I personally feel gross if I don't get up, wash, and dress in actual clothes - even when poorly. I wouldn't judge those who don't, though.

I think we are talking about clean pjs worn as clothes. I still have a shower and put on underwear if I decide to a pjs day. Plus,I also wear a jumper as just pjs are not warm enough for me.

TeenageSu1cideDontDoit · 24/12/2025 13:23

PumpkinSparkleFairy · 24/12/2025 11:27

Of course it’s not normal to wear pyjamas all day if you’re well 😂

Why not? If they're clean and you've showered? I wear pjs most days and only get dressed when I leave the house.

SparkFinder · 24/12/2025 13:25

I think it's so lovely when people have the Christmas day they want and need, rather than the one they think they should have. Whatever that looks like is perfect for each family. I'm not worried about the people in pyjamas, I'm worried about the people having a Christmas that puts them and their family under stress and pressure. So many of us are operating at such intensity during the year, a Christmas period of comfort, fun and relaxing is lovely.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 24/12/2025 13:29

I hate wearing pj's in the day, any day.

Also giggling at the thought of my family sitting around in pj's. It just wouldnt work for us.

Bayleaf30 · 24/12/2025 13:34

If you’re making the effort to get showered, changed, presumably put underwear on, then put PJs on I don’t get why you wouldn’t just get dressed in normal lounge clothes. That way you can also go outside when needed.

I’d be too cold sitting around in PJs anyway. All power to you though if it works for you.

mondaytosunday · 24/12/2025 13:35

Yes, I’ve put so much effort into decorating the house, setting a lovely table, cooking the food (actually my DD is in charge of that this year) and using our special china that it would feel weird rocking up to the table in my, admittedly pretty ragged, pjs! As we aren’t having guests casual is fine, but out of respect for the occasion we will be showered and dressed. The morning in pjs is fine (my late hubby would get dressed and I felt it was almost a tradition to open presents in pjs)!

WaitingfortheThingtoHappen · 24/12/2025 13:37

I don't know anyone in real life who wears nightwear during the day on any day of the year.

If I visited someone on Christmas Day, or they came to me wearing nightwear of any kind, I would assume they were unwell. It's just not normal for the people I know.

It would seem from reading this thread that there are some people for whom wearing normal daytime clothing is uncomfortable or "not fun".

I have never met any of those people, but if not getting properly dressed is the best way to enjoy their day, then that's what they should do.

PermanentTemporary · 24/12/2025 13:38

Urgh. No.

We wear pj’s on Christmas Day because it’s fun. Other than letting the dog out, we’re staying at home all day. It’s minus something horrible and snowing, the furnace is on so everyone will be warm. Back out on Boxing Day for skiing so a day inside isn’t going to hurt anyone.

littlemissalwaystired · 24/12/2025 13:40

I’m 39 weeks pregnant. You can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be just putting on clean pjs tomorrow😂

aintnospringchicken · 24/12/2025 13:41

It’s not something I would do ,but if that’s what other people want to do then I certainly wouldn’t judge anyone.
Maybe if I owned some stylish pjs then I’d might contemplate wearing them during the day.

Cherrytree86 · 24/12/2025 13:47

Nope, shower, do hair, do makeup, get dressed here

I want to look and feel nice

Why wouldn’t you feel nice after a shower and put on new silk pj’s? (I never wear makeup up so not relevant and hair is always a wild and curly look!)

Ineedanewsofa · 24/12/2025 13:52

I’m taking from this that a lot of people have very warm houses, I’d be freezing wearing just PJs around the house in December!

I am not sure why feeling bed bound would make it enjoyable for me. Might as well put on a silk skirt and a top, be dressed and able to open the door, not just spend the day thinking it's bed time.

nightwear is too baggy and loose to feel comfortable during the day , but I don't even like being bra-less - and I have got small boobs!

FoxLoxInSox · 24/12/2025 14:10

As a family we’ve always dressed up for Christmas Day. Women and girls with new dresses, sometimes heels, men with chinos or shit trousers, nice crisp jewel-coloured shirts, smart shoes. Both sexes wear their more expensive fragrances or ones they got for Christmas.

We’re not generally a dressy fussy family but Christmas Day is just always automatically the day we make an effort. Nice make up, done hair properly. Then paper hat on top to wreck it all 😹

I don’t wear pj’s for bed but tomorrow’s pj’s will be a luxurious outfit . They are hanging up ready to wear. I won’t need to open the door (other than for the dog to have a quick wee in the snow) as all our visitors are arriving today other than DT’s whose flights arrived yesterday.
