Husband - 32 and an absolute scientist non believer
me also 32 and whilst a bit more open minded also a non believer

So my husband has been saying for months he thought I was on the landing and then found our no I wasn’t.. he saw a shadow on the upstairs landing and looked up to discover I was downstairs

didnt think much until both children were on my bed and then one of the picture hooks on a picture rail pinged onto the floor of its own accord the other morning now while it freaked me out.:: I didn’t think much and rationalised a mouse ./////

again didn't think much of it until the baby was crying this afternoon and I saw with my own eyes the outline of a man walk across the landing (looked like a shadow)

then this evening the lights (dimmer switch) were switching on and of and this happened about 20 times

not sure what to think

Years ago my dad was home alone, at that time our lounge door had windows in it looking to the hallway, my mum was out dad heard her come home open the front door, my mum put a little chime thing above the front door no idea why! The tinkle went door closed and dad saw mum walk past the lounge door down the hallway, he shouted hello but she didn’t respond. He waited and after a few minutes the front door opened the tinkle went and my mum walked in. She went into the lounge and my dad asked what she was doing going in and out mum replied she hadn’t she had only just walked in. Dad told her not to play silly buggers and explained but she was adamant that she had only just walked in. Dad a total non believer couldn’t work it out he knew he could’ve imagined it but he says he definitely saw mum walk down the hall. Mum wasn’t the type to play tricks like that so no idea what that was. Lots of odd things happened in that house.

Edited

I think he probably did experience the same even ttwice and I'm sure physics will come up with an explanation eventually.

CurlewKate · 23/12/2025 19:14

The important thing to remember is that the experiences people have are real. The issue is whether they are paranormal or not.

Laura95167 · 23/12/2025 19:16

So not a non believer then

If it will help you settle you can ask the Catholic Church for a exorcism.

You could sage the place.

You could holy water the place

Or you could ignore it

giveyourselfapresent · 23/12/2025 19:31

Teenagers can hear sounds at a higher pitch than grown adults. Dogs can smell things too faint for us to perceive. A human would swear some place or thing was odourless that would be a riot of smells to a dog.

I find it plausible that there could be phenomena that are imperceptible to the vast majority of us but that a few brains could pick up on, maybe due to some tiny abnormality or misfire. There's still a lot we don't know about the human brain and about consciousness and sentience.

I've never heard or seen anything out of the ordinary, though I did find out recently that my father and brothers had a number of disturbing experiences in the house we moved to when I was a teenager. Physical stuff like objects flying violently across rooms, drawers opening and closing right in front of them, the dogs cringing in fear at apparently nothing. I only found this out 30 years later, none of them said anything at the time and they still don't like to talk about it. None are the credulous type or the pranking type. My mum never saw anything as far as I know, and I certainly didn't. Maybe the ghost hated men 😉

Lolalady · 23/12/2025 19:39

I can quite believe you OP. People have this misconception that someone has to have died in the house for there to be a spirit but that isn’t necessarily the case. I have a friend who is a medium. She is one of most level headed people I know. My late husband was a total non believer and used to joke with her about it. Until he worked in her house and the radio upstairs switched itself on - he was there on his own. After that he refused to work in the house unless our friends were present!

Peppermintpatty24 · 23/12/2025 19:43

Op burning sage has been known to rid homes of unwanted entities. It worked for me. Don't care what anyine says. It's not until you experience these things that you really know.

Girlonfire1972 · 23/12/2025 19:53

Had a ghost in the house we moved in over 18 yes ago, could hear footsteps and the kids could see shadows
Got my local priest to visit and bless the house. No more ghosts.

MoonWoman69 · 23/12/2025 20:01

Teenagers in the house at the moment? They attract poltergeist activity.

Ritaskitchen · 23/12/2025 20:16

Catholic priest. House blessing with holy water

This is hilarious. Do people really believe in ghosts, or Catholic priests?

Mcoco · 23/12/2025 20:48

Poor you OP! My sister and her friend saw a ghost in an old house many years ago. I would contact a priest and see if he could help. After that I would definitely move house! Wishing you luck.

Ladygodalmighty · 23/12/2025 20:51

No it's not. End of!

mondaytosunday · 23/12/2025 20:54

@ObsidianTreething is if and ghost or entity had the power to open cupboards why not do something more interesting?

It is hilarious. Non-Catholics and non-Christians, people with zero religious belief whatsoever, appear on Mn to think that a crack team of Catholic priests is waiting at the end of a phone line for their ghostbuster call, and that ghosts are quelled by Catholic prayers. Given that it’s fairly obviously as a result of watching The Exorcist, you’d wonder whether these people get the rest of their ideas about life from horror films.

Grapewrath · 23/12/2025 21:00

Spirits and you can co-exist peacefully unless they are causing you an issue. Mine do here- as do the mice mostly and I’m not sure which I prefer!
if hey are sprinkle salt in your doorways and smudge the house with palo Santo, opening the windows. Light white candles. Use tigers eye crystals at your doorways afterwards
if this doesn’t help, enlist a medium with experience of this. I personally wouldn’t use a church figure and not a catholic for that matter for various reasons I won’t get in to.
if you have teens they can create poltergeist energy which would need the same routine.

We had one when I was at uni. I also saw one as a kid before I even had a concept of what they were.
We have one in this house now. The kids all saw her when they were little, usually as they looked in the mirror, or on the stairs. I've never seen her but I sense her. She was upset when we did major renovations but once they were done and the next baby came along she was fine.
Where I work there are many sightings (old building, took a direct hit in the war). I do get a bit freaked out there when it's dark and I'm working alone but like others said, they're not there to cause trouble. Live and let ...live?

For the record, I am a massive sceptic in most areas of my life, totally agnostic, always questioning and definitely choosing science over myth, but I've seen and experienced enough to accept these things.

Mumto2at · 23/12/2025 21:28

My sisters house is haunted, usual creaking noises, doors closing/opening but random equipment (noisy) turning on and items being found on the floor when they're way above children's reach

Funnywonder · 23/12/2025 12:19

Is there a rule that says ghosts only haunt houses? What if your new build is on the site of an old monastery or prison or a field where someone was trampled to death by a herd of cows? Then you (obviously a young person in your new build - no oldies allowed) unwittingly lure the ghost of a monk or a hanged criminal or hapless farmhand into your dwelling.

My experience as a kid was in a house that was only 40 years old. The height of the figure I saw didn't fit with the new house, but it did fit with floor height of the police station that stood there before.

Your husband needs an eye test

The common denominator here is kids, surely. You saw a ‘ghost’ when you were an imaginative, suggestible small child. Your children believe they’ve seen things in your house, but you haven’t. You mention ‘sightings’ at work, but don’t seem to have experienced anything yourself…? Kids don’t fully grasp the distinction between theur imaginations and reality.

I didn't know what I'd seen, I told my mum in the morning that there had been a man standing on a box in my bedroom doorway.
At work, multiple people have experienced multiple things. I've only been there a few years and I've only been in my current office a year. I have no reason to disbelieve.

LostittoBostik · 23/12/2025 21:42

FrankC · 23/12/2025 02:34

There are absolutely no ghosts. I read some statistics ages ago about how quickly men move on after their wife dies Vs how quickly a wife moves on after her husband does. One of those statistics was the % of men who meet their next wife at their dead wife's funeral. If those dead wives aren't haunting those husbands then there's no way a ghost is haunting you.

Well if this wasn’t exactly the Christmas cheer I needed 🤣🤣🤣

Well, when I was little I thought there was a frightening old lady in my bedroom, and I screamed and screamed and refused to go in there to the point where my parents were genuinely concerned. It was my mother’s dressing gown hanging on a peg on the back of the door, which, in the streetlight coming through the curtains, cast a shadow like a hunched figure. I was too young to make the connection between the garment in daylight and the ‘scary lady’ at night.

My house is haunted. I’ve seen shadows, as has my son. He actually saw a young girl when he was around 10. I was home alone when I heard someone running down my stairs. My tvs turn themselves on all the time. My taps do too. I’ve heard footsteps walking the hall when I’m home alone. It doesn’t bother me one bit. It’s not doing me any harm so I just live with it, what else can I do?!
