Husband - 32 and an absolute scientist non believer
me also 32 and whilst a bit more open minded also a non believer

So my husband has been saying for months he thought I was on the landing and then found our no I wasn’t.. he saw a shadow on the upstairs landing and looked up to discover I was downstairs

didnt think much until both children were on my bed and then one of the picture hooks on a picture rail pinged onto the floor of its own accord the other morning now while it freaked me out.:: I didn’t think much and rationalised a mouse ./////

again didn't think much of it until the baby was crying this afternoon and I saw with my own eyes the outline of a man walk across the landing (looked like a shadow)

then this evening the lights (dimmer switch) were switching on and of and this happened about 20 times

not sure what to think

I do think it’s worth remembering how many of these experiences happen when people are just falling asleep or just waking up. So when our brains are likely to be in a half awake dream state. And we can’t say “I knew I was awake”-anyone who has ever had a vivid dream knows that.

ContentedAlpaca · 23/12/2025 10:21

I would do what you can to change the feeling of the space. Plus some plants there, give it a lick of paint etc...

Ihatethistimeline · 23/12/2025 10:44

DM me - if you sign the deeds over to me I’ll sort it for you so the ghosts don’t follow you to your new home.

prawncocktailcrispss · 23/12/2025 10:49

Cleanse your home with sage and ask the spirit to politely leave (even if there is not anything there- the process will have a profound effect -I know I have done this) say it out loud a few times - and sage every room.

whymadam · 23/12/2025 11:00

Fear the living, not the dead. That's the 1st thing, if you are afraid. I don't believe in ghosts BUT we can hear small children running about, laughing, upstairs, when we are in the living room. It's a terrace house, about 160 years old. One set of neighbours have no kids and the other have a baby of 8 months - so the sounds aren't coming from there. You tell me, MN.

MrsArcher23 · 23/12/2025 11:00

Get a Catholic you know to bring holy water and bless every room. Sage as well (belt and braces) and ask the spirit(s) to leave.

whattodo22222 · 23/12/2025 11:05

Read Psalm 91 out loud

youegg · 23/12/2025 11:12

Had you been eating poorly stored popcorn by any chance?

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/12/2025 11:17

Picture hooks fall down all the time.

I find parapsychology fascinating and would really like to believe. However, pareidolia is far more likely.

You have a baby. You’re likely tired, which makes seeing things peripherally more likely. Try to get some more sleep.

That’s interesting and thanks for sharing your experiences… when you realised it wasn’t a dream, did you then ‘wake up’ in your bed as you normally would, or did you realise you were imagining things and stay awake and get on with your day? I’ve had experiences of thinking I’m awake and getting up and going to the loo etc, sometimes it goes on in a loop over and again and it’s horrible because I realise I’m dreaming and it’s part of sleep paralysis.
I’ve always had ‘interesting’ sleep experiences including what felt like out of body experiences… all of these I can attribute to my mind playing tricks.
The ‘ghost’ experience just felt different to these. I was fully cognisant and there was no ‘reawakening up’ if you know what I mean!

Edited

They all happened late at night/early morning, so I always went back to sleep. I might have got up for a wee becore going back to sleep. The scary one I just froze when I realised i couldn’t escape and must have eventually gone back to sleep. I’ve once had a hallucination as a child when I got up for a wee and saw a horrible goblin on the stair grinning at me. I had a friend who as a child in the middle of the day saw a ‘ghost’ in her house. But she knows now it wasn’t a ghost because as a child she had a unique interpretation of how ghosts looked and it looked like that. Another friend was alone in her house and heard a voice very clearly say her name. Visual and aural hallucinations are not as uncommon as people think.

I was alone in my son’s new, empty house, using a rug doctor while he was at work, before the furniture arrived.
All through the afternoon, I heard distinct sighs. No words, but clear, obvious sighs. It took me another visit to realise the “sighs”were automatic air fresheners in the kitchen and bathroom, expelling spray every 20 minutes 🤣
It’s very easy to convince ourselves of strange goings on. There’s almost always a very simple explanation.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 23/12/2025 11:23

Sage, definitely sage. If you make sage and onion stuffing as part of your Christmas dinner, and cook only with holy water, the ghosts will pack their spooky bags and leave.

It’s called the Paxo-Blessing Method. Very powerful.

Or you could just accept the truth that there’s no such thing as ghosts.

Yes, a select number of Catholic priests are appointed as exorcists and can visit a haunted property to say particular prayers in the rite of exorcism. This can happen regardless of faith, but I imagine an atheist wouldn't bother asking unless they were not as committed to atheism as they thought!

My friend is a CofE priest that helps get rid of ghosts. He says it works. I’m an atheist but I do believe in ghosts having experienced something weird as a student. I’d give it a go if I had a ghost!

Oh dear OP - this, Mumsnet, was not the place to ask this question.
I also am open-minded, but sceptic when it comes to this stuff. I do like the paranormal subject though - join Uncanny Fans Facebook group and go ask this question there. You’ll be met with far less judgemental replies and people will actually want to help.
Mumsnet is notoriously judgey for this stuff and most are very quick to sound like a Boomer telling you to “pack it in, there’s no such things as ghosts or monsters under the bed, little girl.”

GasPanic · 23/12/2025 11:42

Look up the history of the house and find out who lived there, was there a murder etc.

Christ, you’re concerned about people being judgey and yet you write off the opinions of a whole swathe of people because they sound like ‘boomers’? Boomers who all think the same way of course and whose opinions apparently don’t align with yours. I’m not from the baby boom generation by the way. Just sick of hearing this ageist stereotyping shit.

In my experience, 61 now, older generations are more likely to believe in supernatural happenings.

That could just be a consequence of them being around longer so greater chance of experiencing them.

Plus older people tend to live in older houses which have had more chance to be subject to happening that cause ghosts.

No one moves into a new build with a ghost in it.

I think there is a lot of phenomena that we don't have explanations for yet.

It is very unnerving and can be terrifying to experience something like you are experiencing.

I think the people that shut down any discussion with 'there are no ghosts' are really lacking in imagination and have an over-inflated view of the intellectual advancement of our age, in comparison with the past. The reason for shutting it down, it that they can't explain it and they don't like it.

People who have experienced similar to you, have found talking out loud to a perceived ghost to be helpful @saminamama . Alternatively, do as a pp suggested and contact a local church. I don't for a minute believe that God scares a spirit away, but whatever the process is, it has helped many people.

Personally, I would have already moved house! 😬

Totally agree with this poster. Every C of E Diocese has specially trained people for this type of thing. It may be your active imagination but it may not. There are lots of things we don't know about. If you are really worried just contact your local Vicar.

I’m 58, so just outside the baby boom generation😅 A lot of my friends, similarly on the edges of that generation, believe in the supernatural too. I don’t and definitely feel in a minority.

Is there a rule that says ghosts only haunt houses? What if your new build is on the site of an old monastery or prison or a field where someone was trampled to death by a herd of cows? Then you (obviously a young person in your new build - no oldies allowed) unwittingly lure the ghost of a monk or a hanged criminal or hapless farmhand into your dwelling.

Fair point.

Infrasound? (It can come from nearby roads and railways)

I’m a non believer and while I am willing to believe there’s something odd going on in the house I just can’t believe it’s haunted!

I’d be looking for real world solutions first, like the electrics and old hooks becoming loose in old walls, noises from next door because of common floorboards (my friend used to live in a Victorian terrace where you’d be absolutely convinced someone was walking up the stairs and down the landing but it was sound from next door, they figured it out after a few weeks).

You could also do harmless things like burning sage to help you and your DH feel better and lessen the social contagion effect
