Do you think the person who made this cake is a complete amateur?

Just that really. Curious as I got a funny comment.

Not a serious post at all. My feelings won’t be hurt. In full transparency the buttercream did not have time to set. Lunch was earlier than planned so the buttercream wasn’t entirely firm. Still tasted good. Sponges weren’t slipping apart of anything.

Made in an air BnB without piping bags, mixer etc.

I mean, it definitely looks like it was made by someone who doesn’t bake, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t taste lovely!

Love this and do you know which recipe she used by any chance? SmileCake

I’m 61 now and my boss has long since left the company!

Im assuming it’s just a Victoria sponge recipe, with cocoa for the flavouring, split into 2 sandwich tins🤷‍♀️ Hope that guides you, part of its beauty was that it was the sort of basic cake from your childhood!

cupfinalchaos · 19/12/2025 01:37

I’d say an amateur cake is being generous.

maslinpan · 18/12/2025 17:44

It's obviously a home made cake, but the sponge has a good rise and I would definitely have a big slice of you are offering!

Really? It looks incredibly flat

caringcarer · 19/12/2025 02:15

It's not professionally made but it looks nice. It's the taste that counts. Did it taste nice?

I think that’s more to do with the fact that I only had one cake tin and didn’t match them very well when filling as I had to cook the sponges separately one at a time. It’s the same batter.

What a childish response. It doesn't look shit. It looks like 99% of home-made cakes used to look like. It's two sponges sandwiched together with cream and jam, from the look of it, with a bit of buttercream on the top and a few raspberries. What a disservice Instagram and other forms of social media have done us, by making perfectly ordinary people and foods look inadequate to those who expect everything to be styled and filtered.

I have eyes and can see what it is. It's nothing to do with Instagram or social media, I make my own cakes. Nothing is styled and filtered 🙄

DoubleHardBastard · 19/12/2025 16:18

Also, not sure how my post broke talk guidelines. OP asked for opinions, I gave mine 🙄.

JayJayj · 19/12/2025 18:12

To me it looks like someone’s 1st ever attempt at cake making.
I would class myself as an amateur cake baker and mine are loads better! Sorry. I just think your butter was too warm when making it. I’ve never had to have my buttercream set except when I do a crumb coat.

nadine90 · 19/12/2025 18:24

Aw op, I think it looks delicious and made with love. Professional, no, but you’re not a professional so why would it? I’ve only ever had one cake baked for me and I would be delighted if someone put in time and effort to present me with this. Practice makes perfect, ignore the meanie!

Rpop · 19/12/2025 18:32

I can’t believe all these harsh messages. I’m quite good at baking and I think the cake looks normal for a homemade cake. Lots of cakes look great and taste disappointing. What’s with the weird cupcake frosting that looks great and tastes of nothing? Or the perfect looking sponge that’s actually dry? I bet it tastes delicious.

Tigerbalmshark · 19/12/2025 18:37

OP I would rather have a slice of your cake than a slice of shop bought cake! Looks delicious.

if I wanted a wedding cake or something, that is obviously a slightly different requirement where you are after perfect icing/elaborate decoration and not just a tasty slice of cake. But for cake to eat, I’d want one like yours.

Trotula · 19/12/2025 18:37

Given the circs you did amazingly well! Im a competent cake baker but wouldn’t even attempt this outside my own kitchen where I know the oven, have all the equipment and plenty of time! You are a star!
I bet it tasted much better than a shop bought one anyway!

Bearbookagainandagain · 19/12/2025 18:37

Yes absolutely, but it doesn't mean it doesn't look delicious!

I wouldn’t consider myself a complete newbie when it comes to baking. I make a lot of bread, tray bakes, biscuits etc. Can’t say I make a lot of cakes. I don’t decorate beyond chucking some icing sugar on a treat normally. Other than this cake the last time I made sponge was maybe 18 months (sticky toffee pudding but doesn’t require decorating). I don’t think my baking is extremely high quality looks wise (always a bit rustic) but they do mostly taste great.

at this birthday gathering I was telling my family about a baking course I went on (bread related). One of my ILs said what a waste of money when he saw the cake lol.

It was extremely slap dash I will admit that. Decorated rather hastily (2 mins of that). I dunno I’m sort of known as the baker (only as a hobby) and I was just embarrassed I guess 😂

It looks delicious so well done!

Friendlyfart · 19/12/2025 18:59

Looks tasty but not a professional cake!

DiaryofaProvincialLady · 19/12/2025 19:19

I mean, are you hoping we say it looks professional? As that's the only other option and its very clearly not that.

Charlize43 · 19/12/2025 19:22

I love cakes that look like this!

Picklelily99 · 19/12/2025 19:34

Looks like a GREAT homemade cake to me! That's not to knock it, because I bet it tasted a damn sight better than something off the shelf. I'd be 'over the moon' with that!

pineapplesundae · 19/12/2025 19:46

It looks yummy but did you think this looks like a professional made it?

Tapsthemic · 19/12/2025 19:53

I actually think it looks really stylish, OP. And I bet it tasted delicious x

Ritaskitchen · 18/12/2025 17:43

I wouldn’t pay for it. But if brought to a family or friends event would happily try it and only care about the taste.

Agree.

How are you known as “the baker” when you go on to say this is the first cake you’ve made on your own?! Lol

Surely it’s one or the other? It does look messy but I’m sure it doesn’t affect the taste so long as it was mixed to reasonable proportions and not overcooked. It’s fairly difficult to make a cake badly!!

NigelForage · 19/12/2025 20:20

I think it looks bloody delicious

Why didn’t he make a cake if yours was so bad then? I hope you didn’t serve him a slice.
