Do you think the person who made this cake is a complete amateur?

Just that really. Curious as I got a funny comment.

Not a serious post at all. My feelings won’t be hurt. In full transparency the buttercream did not have time to set. Lunch was earlier than planned so the buttercream wasn’t entirely firm. Still tasted good. Sponges weren’t slipping apart of anything.

Made in an air BnB without piping bags, mixer etc.

Do you think the person who made this cake is a complete amateur?

It looks like a very nice homemade cake to me, not professionally made, so yes amateur, but that's not a bad thing.

This. I've always said I make tasty cakes, not beautiful ones. Which is fine by me!

Melloplan · 18/12/2025 17:44

Okay maybe amateur isn’t the right word but complete novice

Yes, it looks like a novice/inexperienced baker made it and it's a bit of a mess, but it's a homemade cake covered in candles so who cares?

I bet it was delicious.

Supersimkin7 · 18/12/2025 17:50

Looks delicious. A proper old school fete cake.

sonjadog · 18/12/2025 17:50

It looks like a nice, homemade cake. Is that a problem? Did you pay someone for it, or why are you asking?

Hosoan · 18/12/2025 17:51

I mean, it doesn't look professional of course it doesn't, but it does look scrumptious! I'd happily demolish a slice of that in preference to a sickly artificial tasting professional cake. And I think it looks lovely.

pilates · 18/12/2025 17:51

It looks like a homemade cake

PigeonsandSquirrels · 18/12/2025 17:52

Yes. Looks like a great homemade cake by a non professional

MassiveBackstory · 18/12/2025 17:55

I once sacked a cleaner partly because she was so rude about the cake I made for my 4 yo’s birthday Blush

Melloplan · 18/12/2025 17:55

I wouldn’t consider myself a complete newbie when it comes to baking. I make a lot of bread, tray bakes, biscuits etc. Can’t say I make a lot of cakes. I don’t decorate beyond chucking some icing sugar on a treat normally. Other than this cake the last time I made sponge was maybe 18 months (sticky toffee pudding but doesn’t require decorating). I don’t think my baking is extremely high quality looks wise (always a bit rustic) but they do mostly taste great.

at this birthday gathering I was telling my family about a baking course I went on (bread related). One of my ILs said what a waste of money when he saw the cake lol.

It was extremely slap dash I will admit that. Decorated rather hastily (2 mins of that). I dunno I’m sort of known as the baker (only as a hobby) and I was just embarrassed I guess 😂

It looks like the sort of cake my kids would make when they were little (with a bit of help), but completely delicious. Was it not made by an amateur then?

Melloplan · 18/12/2025 17:56

I have to say it didn’t look a mess once I got it back in the fridge to firm up. The buttercream on the top was fine. Just the in between wasn’t the right consistency.

Oh ok. Cheeky fucker. I'd have told them I assume they didn't want any or asked them to show me the last cake they made.

Melloplan · 18/12/2025 17:58

I didn’t think it was horrendous looking enough for a cheeky comment. Obviously rustic looking but I want embarrassed taking it in (well initially)

It's a lovely homemade cake. Really not keen on the idea that we all have to be professional level bakers or else pay a pro.

Agree! My cakes taste great and are made from wholesome ingredients, but my cake decorating skills are almost non-existent, so they look quite plain. That used to be irrelevant. Sad times if people now prefer cakes where the taste of the cake is irrelevant and all that matters is that it's slathered with sickly additive-laden buttercream and fondant.

I was in a local coffee shop the other day and they were selling Christmas cakes made in a local bakery. I expect they're very good and nicely iced but for quite a small cake (smaller than the rum cake I've made for our Christmas/New Year) the price was £36! Bloody hell.

Rude twat, with no class or decency.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 18/12/2025 18:01

It definitely looks amateur, but that isn't a criticism.

It's the sort of cake that I might make as a not very experienced baker. My family, friends and I would all very much enjoy such a cake. They don't have to look perfect. You have nothing to feel embarrassed about.

I’m trying to find similar ones my kids have baked. My daughter baked this back in April 22 so would have just turned 13. A bit of a mess but presentable. I don’t get what the problem is though unless you were paid to make it?
Edit mn not letting me put pic 🙄

Boomer55 · 18/12/2025 18:01

If you’re paying, then no, not good. 👎

Or its just a nice gesture, well then, lovely. 👍

Soonenough · 18/12/2025 18:02

See I think that was funny . Like when I told someone how much I paid for driving lessons they said You were robbed 😞 😭! And I love your cake 🍰 Better than anything I've ever made . Tell him to feck off.

Please, please tell me that you prevented this tosser from having a slice. So rude!

Run30 · 18/12/2025 18:03

It look WONDERFUL!
Give me a beautiful, homemade cake - made with love - over some ‘perfect’ confection. Any day.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 18/12/2025 18:03

It looks homemade and lovely, but probably made by someone who isn't a 'baker'.

edited to add, after seeing your other comments- You've said yourself you don't makes sponges often and that bread is more your thing so...

You've already made it clear the op's cake looks like something a kid made. You don't need to hammer the message home with picture evidence

Barrenfieldoffucks · 18/12/2025 18:03

It's not horrendous looking, but it is very messy. Which is fine, homemade cakes are allowed to be. But perhaps presented with a flourish by the 'baker of the family' seemed a little more incongruous.
