Do you think the person who made this cake is a complete amateur?

Just that really. Curious as I got a funny comment.

Not a serious post at all. My feelings won’t be hurt. In full transparency the buttercream did not have time to set. Lunch was earlier than planned so the buttercream wasn’t entirely firm. Still tasted good. Sponges weren’t slipping apart of anything.

Made in an air BnB without piping bags, mixer etc.

Looks like a luscious home made cake.
I would be going for a slice of that cake ahead of a perfect looking one any day.

DiscoBeat · 18/12/2025 20:12

A cake home-made with love is the very best cake. It looks delicious 😋

mumof5five · 18/12/2025 20:13

It looks like a Labour of love. And very delicious. Great job.

Dita73 · 18/12/2025 20:13

That cake would mean far more to me than anything someone bought. The fact you made the effort to make it is priceless

PruthePrune · 18/12/2025 20:13

I'd shove it in me gob no problem.

Londonrach1 · 18/12/2025 20:14

It's a homemade cake made with love. What's not to love about it

DiscoBeat · 18/12/2025 20:14

Also, ignore the funny comment. Did they take the time to make a cake?

Dollybantree · 18/12/2025 20:17

I’m sure your twat of a FIL was happy to have a slice though wasn’t he? And that he’ll serve up his own effort next time?

Im sorry you didn’t have time to come up with a pithy response OP - what a cu next Tuesday to try and embarrass you when you’d taken the time to bake a cake for everyone. Next time “that was rude” and allowing time for an awkward silence will suffice.

It looks delicious btw!

anyolddinosaur · 18/12/2025 20:20

You just respond with you can make the next one then.

Tbh for a birthday where you have to use someone else's ill equipped kitchen they'd have had a supermarket iced cake and lumped it.

I wouldn’t consider myself a complete newbie when it comes to baking. I make a lot of bread, tray bakes, biscuits etc. Can’t say I make a lot of cakes. I don’t decorate beyond chucking some icing sugar on a treat normally. Other than this cake the last time I made sponge was maybe 18 months (sticky toffee pudding but doesn’t require decorating). I don’t think my baking is extremely high quality looks wise (always a bit rustic) but they do mostly taste great.

at this birthday gathering I was telling my family about a baking course I went on (bread related). One of my ILs said what a waste of money when he saw the cake lol.

It was extremely slap dash I will admit that. Decorated rather hastily (2 mins of that). I dunno I’m sort of known as the baker (only as a hobby) and I was just embarrassed I guess 😂

rude in law!

ArseEndOfChristmas · 18/12/2025 20:24

One of the best cakes I’ve ever had was one made by my boss for my 50th.

It was a real ‘old school’ chocolate cake sandwiched with chocolate buttercream and topped with chocolate glacé icing and chopped up flakes.

It was very slightly wonky, but, my goodness, we all shovelled it down, amidst muttering of “proper cake, this’ .. and ‘ooh, reminds me of my Mums baking’ There wasn’t even crumbs left!

So lovely of her to make it for me, it was an amazing cake!

As a pp said, your cake is homemade…. Magic!

AbbaCadaBra · 18/12/2025 20:30

yes, it’s amateur but I like it. As cakes go it’s got character. Much nicer than shop bought.

27pilates · 18/12/2025 20:35

I think the cake looks lovely. I much prefer homemade cakes compared to ‘professional’ cakes. As for the comment, very snotty. Designed to bring you down. Big demerit for them.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/12/2025 20:39

It's a cake. There is no bad cake (in my opinion) and homemade is best of all.

BellaVita · 18/12/2025 20:41

Hell if someone went to the trouble of making me a cake especially when not in their own environment I would be over the moon.

What twattish behaviour. I wouldn’t have even offered them a piece!

GreyBeeplus3 · 18/12/2025 20:41

Considering you had no baking implements and used your own effort it looks a really well done homemade cake. Nice!

Allthesnowallthetime · 18/12/2025 20:41

Amateur in the true sense of the word: made with love 💕.

Can I have some??

BingBongMerrilyWithPie · 18/12/2025 20:48

Literally yesterday my teen was telling me how much she loved getting home made birthday cakes every year.

Your cake was wasted on your rude IL. Are they a baker themselves? My guess is not.

Love this and do you know which recipe she used by any chance? SmileCake

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 18/12/2025 20:55

No , it looks lovely, a nice homemade cake.

OldBeyondMyYears · 18/12/2025 20:57

Well it’s 100% better than anything I’ve could make, and it looks delicious! Of course, it’s homemade, but I prefer this to be honest! I’d be very happy to have this as my birthday cake OP 👌🏻

Wheech · 18/12/2025 21:00

It looks like a home made cake which is what it is. My assumption would be it's less of a showstopper than a professional one but likely to taste as good or better, and be made with decent ingredients. I wish everything didn't have to be Insta Perfect all the time and that was a rude comment from your guest. Is the cake made with love, does it taste good? That's all that matters. The cakes I remember from my life are not remembered for their aesthetic perfection.

ThatRareLimeFinch · 18/12/2025 21:06

To me, yes. it does look amateur. the rise of the sponges isn't even, there is chunks out of the lower sponge, and as you said you had some filling issues. That being said, id happily have a slice!

i used to make cakes for friends and family, havent for a couple years now, but i'm by know means a professional.

At least this one kept his comments to himself 😂

Gorgeous dog. Is that a Mali?

Dliplop · 18/12/2025 21:18

Looks homemade by someone who cares more about taste than decorating. I’ve been baking birthday cakes since I was a baby and they don’t look much better than that decorated if I’m in a rush.

But people who don’t bake have no clue. My inlaws would love a Walmart cake but will pick apart even my best cakes. It really upset me for a few years and now I just talk back firmly.
