Do you think the person who made this cake is a complete amateur?

Just that really. Curious as I got a funny comment.

Not a serious post at all. My feelings won’t be hurt. In full transparency the buttercream did not have time to set. Lunch was earlier than planned so the buttercream wasn’t entirely firm. Still tasted good. Sponges weren’t slipping apart of anything.

Made in an air BnB without piping bags, mixer etc.

Never mind the cake (which looks tasty) I want to know more about the dog!

gamerchick · 18/12/2025 21:21

Ah man that looks amazing. I want cake now Grin

Aimtodobetter · 18/12/2025 21:23

Looks lovely but it is clearly homemade - which in of itself is lovely because if you want a professional looking cake, you can just buy one, but you ahve to put work into a homemade cake.

He’s a lovely malinois. Very goofy and very well behaved. Even if it does look like he’s thinking “wtf is that” at the cake 😂.

Homemade without any nasties added, preservatives, palm oil(hopefully) etc. Great. We need to get back to clean food. The cake looks v nice and perfect with a cuppa.

BunnyLake · 18/12/2025 21:45

It just looks like a home made cake, which it is.

Generally, telling people that something they've made looks like something a small child would make is an insult.

A photograph to prove the fact is completely unnecessary

You are ridiculous, I did not get that at all and I definetly would not be offended to be told that. Why do people feel the need to feel.offended on others' behalf?

MissDoubleU · 18/12/2025 21:57

It certainly isn’t a professional bake but I don’t see why that should be an insult to you if you aren’t a professional. Many people can be proficient in home baking and make successfully delicious treats that are even nice looking, but that doesn’t make it professional level.

I would be quite happy saying I am an amateur baker and having everyone enjoy the cake I made. But it seems like your ego has came into play somewhere along the lines? Why?

Xkk · 18/12/2025 22:04

ThatRareLimeFinch · 18/12/2025 21:06

To me, yes. it does look amateur. the rise of the sponges isn't even, there is chunks out of the lower sponge, and as you said you had some filling issues. That being said, id happily have a slice!

i used to make cakes for friends and family, havent for a couple years now, but i'm by know means a professional.

You have real talent, well done! But I can't get overvthat poor girl's name spelling! How do you pronounce it?

She didn't say she was insulted, just slightly embarassed in the moment.

But the embarrassment continued far enough to seek validation from here as to how professional the job was. She knows given the circumstances it wasn’t ideal, but a decent job. What really matters beyond if it tasted good?

Besides. There are some incredibly accomplished child bakers.

Mymanyellow · 18/12/2025 22:19

Some people have got a fucking cheek. Looks good to me, better than I could do at least. I agree with the dog, he’s not thinking wtf he’s thinking yum when can I have a slice.

XWKD · 18/12/2025 22:19

I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. It looks tasty.

It look WONDERFUL!
Give me a beautiful, homemade cake - made with love - over some ‘perfect’ confection. Any day.

This👆I made my first ever Carrot cake a few weeks ago and it fell apart in our fridge because I hadn’t let the cake cool down enough before the cream cheese filling was added.
My family absolutely bloody loved it .They were very impressed by my effort and cake was eaten without any PA comments!

MimiGC · 18/12/2025 22:31

Looks delicious to me.

grrrlatrix · 18/12/2025 22:32

I’d say rustic and charming.

Nopenousername · 18/12/2025 22:35

It looks really tasty but I can’t imagine it has a good side, sorry

Her post is happy and light hearted. She does not seem to me she is seekig validation but more an honest opinion. She was honest that it looked off and it was not corectly eexecuted. She did not come here to argue, to seek validation or to be questioned over why she posted. The whole tone of the post was honest but positive and everybody answered the same. Only you had to start asking silly questions about her "ego" and changed the tone from positive to negative. I find it fascinsting how some people seem to argue just for the sake of it. If you think she looks for validation why do you bother to answer and not just keep on scrolling. Madness.

ThePerfectWeekend · 18/12/2025 22:38

Honestly, it's not even a good amateur attempt. I was a pastry chef and have judged many village shows over the years. That cake wouldn't place in any of them and the WI would be up in arms. They could be vicious though.

I wasn’t cruel to the OP, I didn’t say her cake was terrible I simply said it quite clearly was an amateur bake - which it was! I was confused why she would be embarrassed at having it remarked to be amateur looking when she is an amateur who admits herself she faced many challenges in putting it together. Not being in her own/a proper kitchen being a key one.

If someone made it for me I would think: delicious! What a lovely thing for someone to do! Then scrum up a slice.

If someone told me their child baked it themself I would also think: delicious! Well done them. What a good effort.

It’s not a cake which I think surpasses the ability of a child with an interest in baking. I don’t think OP thinks herself it’s her best work or at the pinnacle of her own baking ability, and thus it shouldn’t reflect on her in that way.

I'm not offended. Why would I be? Have a slice of cake and calm down.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/12/2025 23:10

Looks lovingly and deliciously homemade. 😋

awww thank you! thats one of my friends daughters. her names actually emeliya-rose. its pronounced like Amelia but with a 'E' sound at the start not an 'A'

MontythePrince · 18/12/2025 23:14

I think it looks home made and delicious

PigeonsandSquirrels · 18/12/2025 23:32

It doesn’t look BAD OP. That’s not what you asked. It looks amateur and you admit that it’s the first cake you’ve made alone with little equipment and in a rush. For that it looks good… but still homemade and rustic because it IS homemade and by a novice!
