Do you think the person who made this cake is a complete amateur?

Just that really. Curious as I got a funny comment.

Not a serious post at all. My feelings won’t be hurt. In full transparency the buttercream did not have time to set. Lunch was earlier than planned so the buttercream wasn’t entirely firm. Still tasted good. Sponges weren’t slipping apart of anything.

Made in an air BnB without piping bags, mixer etc.

Do you think the person who made this cake is a complete amateur?

I think objectively it doesn't look professional, perhaps a bit informal, but I'd wager it was still very delicious.

Kindly, do you think you have taken this a bit personally? This cheeky comment would be acceptable as a joke in my family, unless they could see you were upset or flustered, in which case it'd be a bit mean.

I think you are being sensitive because you have fashioned yourself as the baker and then had a public flop. It is sod's law, i am a decent cook but when we get guests it never turns out quite as good - very annoying!!

I'd put it out of your mind, and chalk it up to experience and tell FIL you are excited to see his vastly superior cake in due course.

Chrunchienuts · 18/12/2025 18:27

It looks like a homemade cake. Looks yummy though 😋

BillieWiper · 18/12/2025 18:27

It looks lovely bit not professional no. It's just two sponges with cream and fruit? I wouldn't want or need a professional to do that so home made is perfect.

In fact I like the more rustic look of home made cakes. Unless you want very intricate decorations.

Flowerslamp · 18/12/2025 18:28

I think it was probably a mixture of you telling everyone you were a trained baker, and someone cracking a joke that didn't hit the mark. I'd guess his jokes often don't.

Okay maybe amateur isn’t the right word but complete novice

Doesn’t look a complete novice made it. Looks like it was made by a home baker who is reasonably proficient but not a professional.

I’ve never told anyone I was a trained baker. Just that I’ve started a baking course (nothing prestigious, it’s in a retired bakers home kitchen). It’s definitely not for anyone uber proficient. Definitely targeted at home bakers. I’m definitely not going to sell anything I make. I just enjoy baking and especially the eating.

It’s my hobby. Love getting all cosy in the kitchen.

Well bread making is a completely different skill that isn't at all transferable to cakes so I don't know why this relative thought one would somehow give skill in the other.
I don't like cakes I make to look at all perfect in fact we enjoy making them look a bit crashed, the kids love it. I just give them some gooey frosting and a ridiculous assortment of sprinkles etc. and they create a sort of mud pie. They love my birthday!

myglowupera · 18/12/2025 18:31

It looks lovely and delicious. I would definitely have a slice! 🍰

I don’t think this is true , it looks like it was thrown together in a hurry , which the OP admits it was . I’m no baker but if I was doing a cake for a family party I would get it looking tidier than that purely because it just looks slapdash . I don’t think that it is representative of lots of people’s home baking .

This is my point. People nowadays do look at a cake like that and think it's slapdash. When I was growing up and for that matter 30 years ago when I was making birthday cakes for my children it would have looked fine.

zestyjane3001 · 18/12/2025 18:34

I really like it! I think the candles look good I will look into similar ones birthday celebration. I usually go for short ones but these longer ones look great.

Cake looks delicious.

I don’t mind the comments. It’s only cake after all. In the moment maybe I felt embarrassed presenting it once the irl comment was made. Especially as people know I enjoy baking. Egg on face moment but only for a second I suppose. It was cut almost immediately

But this is probably the first cake I’ve ever made completely on my own. Im just not that into icing and sponge. I knew it was rustic but I didn’t think it was THAT bad. maybe I need to have higher standards.

Edited

It's not that bad - ignore people here who are giving hyperbolic replies about how terrible it looks. It looks exactly like what it is, a home made cake. People who make cakes professionally have had lots of practice, possibly even been on courses - it's not enough just to be creative or artistic, you have to know the materials you're working with, how icing goes when you do different things to it and so on.

By all means, learn to decorate cakes to a professional standard if it would give you pleasure - I imagine it's a very satisfying thing to be able to do - but in the meantime, don't judge your home made cakes to professional standards, as you are just going to feel unnecessarily bad about them.

TokyoSushi · 18/12/2025 18:34

It doesn’t look professional, but it does look absolutely delicious!

Kellykukoo · 18/12/2025 18:35

Well...I have seen tidier home made cakes from complete novices so would expect a tidier cake from someone who had been on a course. But that doesn't excuse the negative comments from your guest. It was pointless and self-serving.

Tiedyeegg · 18/12/2025 18:36

I’d assume a competent home baker but not a professional or mary berry or something

Chumpingtonquinces · 18/12/2025 18:36

The only person who should be embarrassed is the mean person who made a snide joke at your expense. In these days of UPFs and people just buying cakes, someone putting care love and effort into creating something as special as a homemade birthday cake has heart and soul, Did the birthday person enjoy it OP? You sound v kind so let it be water off a duck’s back😁

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 18/12/2025 18:38

Going on a bread-baking course is not the same as going on a cake making and decorating course, though.

Apparentlyitschristmas · 18/12/2025 18:38

I think that looks like it’s going to taste nice - proper home made cake . Your guest needs better manners - ignore !

LBFseBrom · 18/12/2025 18:39

You did jolly well. Surrealistic cakes are cool. I bet it tasted good!

JustSawJohnny · 18/12/2025 18:39

I mean, it looks like a homemade cake by someone who doesn't bake very often.

Not exactly a piece to be proud of but it sounds like it was thrown together last minute with little equipment and the thought, and taste, was there!

Novice, yes but who cares when it's rammed full of cream and jam?!

mondaytosunday · 18/12/2025 18:41

Not sure what you mean - yes it looks like a homemade cake so by definition is amateur. If you mean it looks like it was done by someone who’s never made a cake before? Then they did a pretty good job!

pavillion1 · 18/12/2025 18:42

I always think cakes like this taste the nicest

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 18/12/2025 18:42

It looks like a lovely homemade cake, and a lot better than many (which are still delicious)

Unless you were there as a professional baker, whoever this is is a rude arse

Melloplan · 18/12/2025 18:45

The dog I’ve cropped out looking longingly at the cake is who I’m going to trust over big gob 😂

It looks like a lovely homemade cake - it looks delicious! Professional cakes with all the fondant icing look amazing but they don't taste that great. Give me a lovely homemade sponge any day!

Delphiniumandlupins · 18/12/2025 18:54

Looks like a perfectly nice home-made cake. Anyone commenting otherwise is an arse and shouldn't have been offered any to eat.
