Do you think the person who made this cake is a complete amateur?

Just that really. Curious as I got a funny comment.

Not a serious post at all. My feelings won’t be hurt. In full transparency the buttercream did not have time to set. Lunch was earlier than planned so the buttercream wasn’t entirely firm. Still tasted good. Sponges weren’t slipping apart of anything.

Made in an air BnB without piping bags, mixer etc.

You've already made it clear the op's cake looks like something a kid made. You don't need to hammer the message home with picture evidence

I want being rude? It’s a perfectly normal cake? I’m not understanding the issue

Mcpdon · 18/12/2025 18:05

Looks tasty and fun. Not like “neat” but I don’t know why anyone would care about that. The comment you received was cheeky indeed. Bet the cheeky fucker wasn’t offering cake services, just an armchair criticiser.

I wouldn’t consider myself a complete newbie when it comes to baking. I make a lot of bread, tray bakes, biscuits etc. Can’t say I make a lot of cakes. I don’t decorate beyond chucking some icing sugar on a treat normally. Other than this cake the last time I made sponge was maybe 18 months (sticky toffee pudding but doesn’t require decorating). I don’t think my baking is extremely high quality looks wise (always a bit rustic) but they do mostly taste great.

at this birthday gathering I was telling my family about a baking course I went on (bread related). One of my ILs said what a waste of money when he saw the cake lol.

It was extremely slap dash I will admit that. Decorated rather hastily (2 mins of that). I dunno I’m sort of known as the baker (only as a hobby) and I was just embarrassed I guess 😂

Edited

Your in-law was bloody rude.

You've made a delicious-looking homemade cake. It's a traditional sponge.

Lulu1919 · 18/12/2025 18:07

Basic homemade cake

DoubleHardBastard · 18/12/2025 18:08

Yes.

Generally, telling people that something they've made looks like something a small child would make is an insult.

A photograph to prove the fact is completely unnecessary

Trionly · 18/12/2025 18:09

Yeah very homemade.

Absolutely not something that money would change hands over.

I’m an infrequent/not good baker and while I can’t guarantee my cakes will be even/straight id at least have tidied up the jam and cream in the middle and made the icing and fruit on the top straight.

Bread and cakes are not really the same type of baking though. I think your IL was really rude and didn’t deserve any of that delicious looking cake. Honestly, everyone doesn’t have to cook to Bake-Off Finals level, for heaven’s sake!

Trionly · 18/12/2025 18:13

Seen your update since replying.

Hope the cheeky bastard was either joking and/or didn’t take a slice.

Even if I thought “could’ve tidied that up if it’s for a birthday” I wouldn’t bloody insult it!

And bet it tasted amazing. Just a shame to make stuff from scratch and then throw it together too quickly and do yourself a disservice.

Melloplan · 18/12/2025 18:14

It was a bloody pain in the arse. There was only one cake tin and only a whichso that took forever. It was very rushed at the end as some family were setting off but wanted to sing Happy Birthday. (Yes I’m getting the excuses in 😂).Tbh I don’t think it would’ve even looked much better if I’d had an hour. The only thing is the fillings may have been a better consistency had I baked it the day before like I had planned. I was helping make a roast whilst doing the cake. There that’s another excuse. It is true however!

This is why I’ve avoided cakes!

It looks delicious. It's not decorated to a professional standard, but who would expect that of a home made cake?

What a childish response. It doesn't look shit. It looks like 99% of home-made cakes used to look like. It's two sponges sandwiched together with cream and jam, from the look of it, with a bit of buttercream on the top and a few raspberries. What a disservice Instagram and other forms of social media have done us, by making perfectly ordinary people and foods look inadequate to those who expect everything to be styled and filtered.

OnARainyDay2012 · 18/12/2025 18:18

I think Mary Berry would describe it as "informal" but I think it looks lovely and bet it tasted great!

propercoppercoffeepot · 18/12/2025 18:18

It looks very inviting and comforting!

RaisinRainbow · 18/12/2025 18:19

Professional chef here. It's clearly home made.

MuttsNutts · 18/12/2025 18:20

If you’re that easily offended (I’m guessing he was joking) then I really don’t think putting a photo of your cake on MN for comments was a good idea.

It looks like what it is - a homemade cake made in unfamiliar surroundings with less than perfect equipment and not much time. I’m sure it tasted delicious, but I’m not sure what you’re hoping to achieve here. No one is going to tell you it looks like a professionally made cake but so what. I’d gladly eat it.

I don’t think this is true , it looks like it was thrown together in a hurry , which the OP admits it was . I’m no baker but if I was doing a cake for a family party I would get it looking tidier than that purely because it just looks slapdash . I don’t think that it is representative of lots of people’s home baking .

DollopOfFun · 18/12/2025 18:22

Well yeah- it hasn't been made by a professional has it?

No shade though, looks better than I could do, my baking is rubbish

Flowerslamp · 18/12/2025 18:23

When I make that kind of cake, which is my favourite sort of birthday cake, I deliberately make the filling look uneven. I think it looks better that way, as if it oozing naturally.

Melloplan · 18/12/2025 18:23

I don’t mind the comments. It’s only cake after all. In the moment maybe I felt embarrassed presenting it once the irl comment was made. Especially as people know I enjoy baking. Egg on face moment but only for a second I suppose. It was cut almost immediately

But this is probably the first cake I’ve ever made completely on my own. Im just not that into icing and sponge. I knew it was rustic but I didn’t think it was THAT bad. maybe I need to have higher standards.

Purplewarrior · 18/12/2025 18:23

Yes. Looks yummy.

Teddleshon1 · 18/12/2025 18:23

I bet it tastes a lot better than the perfect looking cake made by a professional .

Dramatic · 18/12/2025 18:25

Well it's much better than I could do, I've attempted it many times and literally never been able to make a cake, something always goes wrong!

ResusciAnnie · 18/12/2025 18:25

Definitely not the standard to sell, so yes. Delicious though I bet!
