Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

I’m sure the adverts for baileys are just baileys and ice.

Yup. The official baileys website gives you the bonus recommendations of adding it to coffee or cocktails if you don’t want to drink it as it comes, but somehow “dilute with milk” doesn’t make the cut 😂😅 Dilute with vodka? Yes okay we’re getting somewhere now.

Thanks for the info, until now the word in this context made me think of linen presses in Tudor houses, usually with those linen fold carvings on the door. I've learned something new today.

Technically mine is a linen press as I have sheets and towels in it!

YABVVU to say it’s “supposed to be” topped up with milk! I’ve literally never heard of anyone doing this with baileys in all my years. Never seen it on a menu in any bar either ! Ideally you serve it over ice, as it comes. You can add it to coffee or ice cream/milkshake if you want to make a boozy drink or in certain cocktails.. Bailey’s as part of a White Russian is especially delicious - but we are talking an actual White Russian. Not just Baileys diluted with milk 😂😂

Edited

I know someone who does it, it’s not what you’re meant to do though it’s just for the weak people that think it’s “too strong” 🤣

StMichaelPenkevil · 18/12/2025 14:18

‘Did you live?’ I’m assuming all the people who haven’t replied did, in fact, not live! 😂

CraftyPlayer · 18/12/2025 14:18

“You’re supposed to top it up with milk” 😂😂 😂

we have it in a coffee or hot chocolate at Christmas, absolutely never topped up a glass of baileys with milk though 😳

Baileys hot chocolate is my absolute favourite! There’s a cafe near me that does an absolutely gorgeous one. I don’t do mulled wine, or wine in general! But a baileys hot chocolate is the decadence December demands.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/12/2025 14:20

I often have a slug of Aldi own brand baileys in hot chocolate

BettysRoasties · 18/12/2025 14:22

We have the chocolate orange Baileys down in the bar. Not sure how I feel about that topped off with milk.

Now in a hot chocolate yes.

You're only supposed to have 2 or 3 very small glasses of it with a tiny bit in, the rest topped up with milk. You feel sick because you are hang over from drinking half a bottle of baileys with a fifth to a quarter of a bottle is more than enough in one sitting. I hope you don't also drink half a bottle of vodka, too, and then wonder why you felt sick?

Who tops up Baileys with milk? I serve it over ice.

It is Best Before rather than Use By. If the bottle was sealed you should be fine. I would imagine if it was gone off it would have curdled.

It does, and it tastes terrible! 😵

workdilemma123abc · 18/12/2025 14:27

why is everyone being so dramatic about the amount and saying it’s nothing like wine? i’ve had half a bottle of 14-15% wine before…

some people drink a whole bottle of wine at that ABV so i hardly think this can be blamed on the worst hangover of the century

i am guessing it is the sheer amount of cream OP!! :D x

Thesummer · 18/12/2025 14:27

Who the hell tops up Baileys with milk???

It's best neat with lots of ice or in a hot chocolate/coffee.

I also love a Baileys laced tiramisu or indeed any other other similar desserts.

Starlight1984 · 18/12/2025 14:28

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/12/2025 13:37

The cream is more of a factor than the alcohol.

Good point.

workdilemma123abc · 18/12/2025 14:30

Bikergran · 18/12/2025 12:46

Baileys is almost twice as strong as wine, so basically you drank a whole bottle of wine to yourself last night. No wonder you feel sick. It's not milkshake.

what wine are you drinking?! less than 9% ABV? :D

Starlight1984 · 18/12/2025 14:31

On a similar note - and slightly hijacking the thread sorry - we have two open bottles of Disaronno from Christmas last year (in the drinks cupboard, not fridge). Will they be ok to drink this year??

MissDoubleU · 18/12/2025 14:31

I’m so relieved by everyone coming for the poster about the milk. Saying you prefer it that way is fine - but claiming that’s how it’s intended to be served is fighting talk!

Imagine I came on here saying I can’t believe you drank straight champagne, you have to mix it with OJ you heathens. I bet some of you aren’t even watering down your wine with lemonade 🤢 Disgustanngg

😂

It's basically alcohol and sugar, two of life's great preservatives.

Coalday · 18/12/2025 14:39

I found an unopened bottle of Baileys 5 years out of date. Mentioned it to friend who drinks it as I intended to bin it, when we were out walking.
She more than happily relieved me of it and has lived to tell the tale.

EarthSight · 18/12/2025 14:41

If it was horrendously off, then I think you would have been able to taste it immediately, just like drinking sour milk.

Baileys is very cloying so that might have made you sick in itself.

PGmicstand · 18/12/2025 14:43

minipie · 18/12/2025 11:24

I think drinking half a bottle of Baileys is the reason you feel sick, regardless of the expiry.

I second this.
Alcohol lasts for ages. As in 'keeps' - because whether it lasts depends on how much you drink in one sitting (!)

The amount of sugar that's in something like this would render it well-preserved, alongside the alcohol content

Peridot1 · 18/12/2025 14:52

@ThatBlackCat - try it with ice! It’s lovely. It’s not very dairy heavy in my view - just a bit creamy.

Amaretto cheese ver ice is lovely too.

AorticValve · 18/12/2025 14:54

I drank a generous glass of Baileys (over ice, heathen! 🤣) last night and I felt rough this morning. It was deffo the Baileys though, nothing to do with the 2 large glasses of wine I had beforehand.

CaveMum · 18/12/2025 14:57

Anyone else remember Tommy from Ground Force admitting he drank Baileys by the pint?! He couldn’t figure out why he was putting on so much weight until it was pointed out that a pint of the stuff was equivalent to about 2000 calories!

My husband told me about that yesterday but I'm sure he said it was Johnny Vegas that said this?
I said that nonsense, noone can drink Bailey's by the pint 😄

chocolatemademefat · 18/12/2025 15:02

If it had gone off surely it would’ve been dropping out of the bottle in lumps? Just drink less next time.
