Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

@FootpathNameChange

It's not a good idea to drink it that much out of date, and it can give you a poorly tummy, but worst case scenario you'll get the shits for a day. You won't be ill for Christmas. Smile

As has been said though, drinking half a bottle of Baileys would make most people sick anyway! 😬

Where did you get it? Has it been in your house since the 2010s?

Delphiniumandlupins · 18/12/2025 15:05

I recently finished off a bottle of a cream liqueur which was a couple of years past it's Best Before date. Absolutely fine. If it had gone off you would know by taste or smell at the first sip.

I can't understand why people think something dramatic happens to food or drink at midnight on a Best Before date. It the stuff has been OK for several years already, why would that change overnight? Obviously, products with a Use By date have a much shorter shelf-life and will be deteriorating faster.

Emmz1510 · 18/12/2025 15:07

I drank some expired Bailey’s once, I think it was only a glass but I had nothing more than some mild diarrhoea. I’m always confused about baileys because it isn’t stored in the fridge yet it has cream in it. The alcohol probably preserves it. I think you’ll be fine.

KittyFinlay · 18/12/2025 15:12

Have you really never had a hangover before?

cardibach · 18/12/2025 15:13

I don't understand how you can have a dairy-based alcohol over ice. That sounds terrible to me, and it sounds odd like it doesn't match. Dairy alcohol in dairy makes sense. Over ice does not.

I don’t like it with ice either, but adding more dairy to it is madness. It’s not particularly strong. It doesn’t need dilution.

Ireland, they are kitchen presses here not cupboards! I usually change it when writing on non Irish boards but forgot this time. That and hotpress which I believe is your airing cupboard 😃

Think I quoted wrong person! @UnctuousUnicorns

Never heard of mixing it with milk either but then again I don't drink it as such just use it in food.

Edited

I think I misread your post. I promise I haven't been on the Baileys yet ! I was originally quoting your post at 13.00 on page 5 of this thread, which gave lots of helpful responses to rid me of my erroneous notion that "press" to mean "cupboard" was historical. Thanks to all. Now I'll step away from derailing the thread any further!

ClawedButler · 18/12/2025 15:16

I can drink a bottle of Baileys in a night, it wouldn't give me a hangover. I think that amount of cream and sugar would probably give me gyp the next day, though.

UnctuousUnicorns · 18/12/2025 15:17

PS Baileys cheesecake sounds lush! 😋

SeaSunandSand · 18/12/2025 15:20

I had a few friends round and one of them brought a bottle of baileys with them with one large measure in. Others wanted a Baileys so I used my bottle. A few weeks later I saw the bottle and forgot it wasn’t mine. I drank it and the next morning I had the worst gut pain ever. I thought I was having a heart attack! I vomited for an hour solid then I was fine.

Turns out it was 2 years out of date! No idea how long it had been opened so most likely something nasty growing in the bottle. It tasted ok and wasn’t lumpy. I still can’t face Baileys 🤢

Miyagi99 · 18/12/2025 15:32

Best before just affects the taste, it won’t go off.

I made dh a baileys fudge tart a few times a year. Doesn’t last the day 😅

You're only supposed to have 2 or 3 very small glasses of it with a tiny bit in, the rest topped up with milk. You feel sick because you are hang over from drinking half a bottle of baileys with a fifth to a quarter of a bottle is more than enough in one sitting. I hope you don't also drink half a bottle of vodka, too, and then wonder why you felt sick?

Who tops baileys with milk 🤮🤮

it’s on its own or with ice

or in your coffee like my gran did 😂

glad your feeling ok @Calliopespa

I usually only drink wine, never spirits. I think I thought it was like buying a pre-mixed cocktail? I won't be trying any again I'm traumatized 😂

You do not mix it with milk.

lindyloo57 · 18/12/2025 16:00

Love a glass or 2 of baileys with ice

Ooh no ice..although I am the only person I know who doesn't have it with ice. My husband asks me every time we have it if I want ice. In the 18 years we have been together I have never had it with ice 😂

MsOtisReflects · 18/12/2025 16:08

I despise ice in any drink (apart from those three days in June when it’s necessary). My Bailey’s lives in the fridge.

OneBlueFinch · 18/12/2025 16:08

🤢 it’s a hangover OP
You’ll be fine 🤪

Tiny bit of Baileys topped up with MILK?

This is criminal behaviour.

It tastes best mixed with brandy. Everyone knows that.

PerrinGreen · 18/12/2025 16:16

You’ll be visited by the ghosts of Christmas past!

Bromptotoo · 18/12/2025 16:19

I'm close to being a functioning alcoholic drinking far more units a week then I should. In other words I've a high tolerance for booze. Half a bottle at 17% would leave me royally hungover.

AorticValve · 18/12/2025 16:26

Actually, this thread has reminded me that on clearing various bottles out of my dad's cellar a few months ago, I found a bottle of Bailey's with a 2007 expiry. That had definitely gone off despite being previously unopened. 🤢🤣

No Brandy for me but make mine a large one 😁

Isometimeswonder · 18/12/2025 16:34

Who in the name of sweet holy shitballs is putting milk in their Bailey's?!

1983Louise · 18/12/2025 16:37

Probably the quantity you drank not the quality😁
