Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

Bailey’s coffee or over ice cream. Delicious.

@marylou25 "in the press"

If you don't mind me asking, which region are you from? I've only ever heard the noun "press" to mean newspapers etc. in modern usage. Or cheese press. I thought its use to mean cupboard was confined to history books, but I see I'm wrong!

On the subject of Baileys, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one baffled by the notion that you're "supposed to mix it with milk" - never heard that before! 🤷‍♀️

"Press" is common usage in Ireland.

HomeTheatreSystem · 18/12/2025 13:47

Yes. No ill effects whatsoever but had I drunk half a bottle of in date Baileys I would feel very unwell the next day.

Hannah Waddingham makes no mention of this in her Bailey's ad on TV!

We say kitchen press or presses here in Ireland. And the hot press is where the immersion and hot water tank live! If the op is not used to drinking spirits it is probably a hangover!

herbalteabag · 18/12/2025 13:52

Baileys curdles when it's off. You would have noticed if that was the case. Usually it happens when the bottle has been opened for too long.

I could drink a bottle of Baileys and I wouldn’t feel my best the next day but I wouldn’t be in intensive care like everyone else here would. I don’t even drink regularly or a lot, I’m just surprised everyone else is so sensitive to it

Bailey's is just so sweet and sickly, drinking half a bottle would definitely make me nauseous, not necessarily drunk, my stomach would just object to all the sugar and cream. Nice in small quantities or with or in a coffee after a meal though.

Thanks for the info, until now the word in this context made me think of linen presses in Tudor houses, usually with those linen fold carvings on the door. I've learned something new today.

FootpathNameChange · 18/12/2025 14:02

Thanks you've all cheered me up 😂

I'm about to sit through the kids school Christmas mass so I'm hoping for no delayed effects!

Thank you (still living) @FootpathNameChange for being instrumental in the uncovering of@ThatBlackCat‘s ungodly rituals.

I have been steadily working my way through all the saved-for-Christmas Bailey’s. I know it’s 17% but it seems to have no effect on me whatsoever.

Ireland, they are kitchen presses here not cupboards! I usually change it when writing on non Irish boards but forgot this time. That and hotpress which I believe is your airing cupboard 😃

Think I quoted wrong person! @UnctuousUnicorns

Never heard of mixing it with milk either but then again I don't drink it as such just use it in food.

You're only supposed to have 2 or 3 very small glasses of it with a tiny bit in, the rest topped up with milk. You feel sick because you are hang over from drinking half a bottle of baileys with a fifth to a quarter of a bottle is more than enough in one sitting. I hope you don't also drink half a bottle of vodka, too, and then wonder why you felt sick?

Topped up with milk?! 🤢 God no!

Straight from the bottle, over ice.

Or with coffee. https://www.baileys.com/en-ie/recipes/baileys-hot-irish-coffee

Eh? Milk?! Never done this. I’d have a small measure with ice.

Snap! 😂

ThatBlackCat · 18/12/2025 14:09

I don't understand how you can have a dairy-based alcohol over ice. That sounds terrible to me, and it sounds odd like it doesn't match. Dairy alcohol in dairy makes sense. Over ice does not.

I've never been able to drink as much as friends and relatives, though I gave it a good try in the old days! 😉
Here's a few more that can induce an instant headache: Smirnoff Ice (RIP?), strong Pimms, certain red wines (hit and miss). And lots of drinks I haven't tried because I suspect they would be lethal! A lot of festive booze ads make me wince inwardly...

Oldandgreyer · 18/12/2025 14:10

I'd feel ill the next day from half a bottle of in date baileys.

PS: Lidl do a toffee yum yum version and it's very good.

YABVVU to say it’s “supposed to be” topped up with milk! I’ve literally never heard of anyone doing this with baileys in all my years. Never seen it on a menu in any bar either ! Ideally you serve it over ice, as it comes. You can add it to coffee or ice cream/milkshake if you want to make a boozy drink or in certain cocktails.. Bailey’s as part of a White Russian is especially delicious - but we are talking an actual White Russian. Not just Baileys diluted with milk 😂😂

Because ice just makes it cold… it doesn’t melt into it.

Exactly! Ice in baileys is the perfect way. You don’t want to dilute the taste at all, just have it super nice and cold.

BettysRoasties · 18/12/2025 14:14

I’m sure the adverts for baileys are just baileys and ice.

CloudSky · 18/12/2025 14:16

Kindly, get a grip! 🤣

It’s fine. It’s alcohol. I’ve drank OPEN bottles of this stuff that’s been in my cupboard for god knows how long!
