Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

<unable to respond because I died from drinking out of date Amarula>

I thought the normal way of drinking Bailey's was in a mug ( with ice if you're being fancy 😂)...

Just my family, then?

😲 In a mug? Haven't you got any glasses?

HisNotHes · 18/12/2025 13:26

HALF A BOTTLE OF BAILEYS?!?!?

The expiry date is not the problem.

ThatBlackCat · 18/12/2025 13:22

Yes, I am Australian.

I've never known any different. I was always taught an inch of Baileys in a glass, and the rest of the glass milk. That that is the proper way to drink it. It's like an inch of rum, and the rest coke.

Edited

My sister lives in Australia and told me Australians find vodka and coke weird.

What is normally drink with vodka?

Taupeness · 18/12/2025 13:28

Pollymollydolly · 18/12/2025 13:26

I thought this too - but I thought kahlua, not amaretto. Kahlua and milk used to be a thing, like a mildly alcoholic milkshake!

Ooh, yum! But I would never dilute Kahlua 😆

I'm not a vodka drinker (nor a Baileys drinker really) but I think vodka with orange juice is the norm.

It's literally the same units as 3 glasses of wine.

Not Red Bull then 😆

I thought Australians were supposed to be drinkers?! Not topping up their Bailey's with milk 😱

BadgernTheGarden · 18/12/2025 13:31

The cream part can taste a bit off and it can separate if you keep it a long time, worse if it's been opened. You would surely notice either of those things. If it tasted OK it should be fine, but in quantity it is a bit sickly so I can understand not feeling well after that much. I would usually just drink a liqueur glass of it in one sitting!

FletchFan · 18/12/2025 13:31

ColdAsAWitches · 18/12/2025 12:07

You're only supposed to have 2 or 3 very small glasses of it with a tiny bit in, the rest topped up with milk.

What's this madness? I've never seen anyone mix it with milk. Coffee at a push. Or various other drinks in cocktails. But never milk. "Supposed to" my arse.

I only ever have it with ice.

It must be a Southern Hemisphere thing.

We also have Baileys equivalent (mostly Amarula) in warmed or steamed milk in the winter.

And then there is the La Bumba, which might be Spanish but the recipe has travelled.

This is a tot of brandy added to chocolate milk. And coffee liqueur if you have any but it's quite alright without that too. It doesn't sound it, but it is quite amazing.

That’s for breakfast 😂

Though I do enjoy a vodka with pink lemonade. My days of redbull and vodka are well and truly in the past.

SummerHouse · 18/12/2025 13:34

We only drank a couple of glasses each, and had the shits the following day, but otherwise all good.

They should use this in their advertising. 😂

Vodka is pretty tasteless so add it to anything you like the taste of to make an alcoholic drink. Any sort of fruit juice is good, orange is common. I don't really like coke so wouldn't go there.

ClawedButler · 18/12/2025 13:35

I'm always mystified by people saying that vodka doesn't taste of anything. To me it has an incredibly strong taste, I can't stand it at all, and everything it is in gets totally spoiled.

Sahara123 · 18/12/2025 13:36

Half a bottle of Bailey’s 🤢

The cream is more of a factor than the alcohol.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/12/2025 13:39

Do it taste ok ?

Guessing so as you would know curdled cream

you will be fine

you have what is known a as a hangover

drinking half a bottle of alcohol can do that 😂

In SA (as clearly we too are a bit odd) vodka, lime and lemonade with vodka.
Or with fruit juices like cranberry etc
Tomato juice for the morning after

Never with coke though.
Brandy is what goes with coke

Alcohol is a preservative. I very much doubt that you could get ill from out-of-date alcohol. How many people have finally broken into a bottle of that sticky stuff that they brought back from holiday a decade ago, in desperation?

Or bottles of expensive wine because it’s 60 year’s old.

MidnightColours · 18/12/2025 13:41

Bikergran · 18/12/2025 12:46

Baileys is almost twice as strong as wine, so basically you drank a whole bottle of wine to yourself last night. No wonder you feel sick. It's not milkshake.

Plus the cream and sugar amongst other ingredients... I wouldn't touch it as I know it means a guaranteed headache for me. And half a bottle would likely incapacitate me for part of the next day. But I'm a wuss compared to many people on this thread!

I could drink a bottle of Baileys and I wouldn’t feel my best the next day but I wouldn’t be in intensive care like everyone else here would. I don’t even drink regularly or a lot, I’m just surprised everyone else is so sensitive to it

TheWickerWoman · 18/12/2025 13:44

I put a shot of baileys in a McDonalds vanilla milkshake last year. Nice it was.
