Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

I drank some out of date baileys once too. I died!

ReturnToRiding · 19/12/2025 00:31

It’s BEST BEFORE, it’s just a guide. You’ll be fine! If it would do you harm it’d say USE BY.

pothos · 19/12/2025 00:53

Blimey, I thought Baileys was the mixer.

I had a few swigs of some out of date baileys a couple of months ago and came down with awful food poisoning the same night, might have been a coincidence though.

JustYourAveregeMillennialMam · 19/12/2025 02:10

I reckon I’d have a dicky belly too if I sunk half a bottle of Baileys, in date or not 😂 probably a whacking headache to go with it aswell 😂

The photo of you holding it clearly says 2 - 3 units for women.

You won't die but I'd be feeling peaky after half a bottle!

She wanted to drink all her units for the week. What's wrong with that 🥳 it's coming up to Christmas after all.

Oh My GoD hAlF a BoTtLe Of BaIlEyS yOu AlCo!

... it's 4.7 standard drinks people. You can stop clutching your pearls.

Bungle2168 · 19/12/2025 03:54

Baileys contains ~50% more alcohol by volume than a typical white wine, and ~30% more than a strong red. It is more in keeping with fortified wines like port and sherry.

YABU to drink half a bottle in one sitting. That’s an impressive binge.

I’m not a huge drinker these days but tbh I can drink baileys like wine! Never gives me a hangover and I only drink it in December. I must be odd 😂

Im glad you said this as im baffled by all the people that would feel ill with half a bottle, especially given how most people in the UK drink. Im an occasional drinker but I can also drink baileys like wine.

Have you really never had a hangover before?

Ive never had a hangover in my life, I am not sure why but alcohol just doesnt seem to affect me like that. I am an occasional drinker but never ever had a hangover regardless of how much I drink, or what I drink.

BuildbyNumbere · 19/12/2025 07:46

Not sure how anyone on here is meant to reply if they didn’t live?

growinguptobreakingdown · 19/12/2025 07:56

Op I basically put Baileys on my cornflakes through December.Half a bottle is fine and definitely do not top it up with milk!

StarLake666 · 19/12/2025 09:49

I love the taste of Baileys but if I drink it it gives me a really bad stomach the next day so I swerve it now 🤢

You drank half a bottle of Baileys. How did you think you would feel the next day 🤣

Well, it would appear OP has now.

Well, it would appear OP has now.

You assume so anyway. Not everyone gets hangovers, not everyone is affected the same way and there are other reasons for nausea.

It could just as easily be psychological, seeing it is out of date, making the assumption it would make OP ill and then they feel ill. Its completely not unheard of to feel unwell because you expect to feel unwell.

You're only supposed to have 2 or 3 very small glasses of it with a tiny bit in, the rest topped up with milk. You feel sick because you are hang over from drinking half a bottle of baileys with a fifth to a quarter of a bottle is more than enough in one sitting. I hope you don't also drink half a bottle of vodka, too, and then wonder why you felt sick?

Topped up with milk?! Have been drinking Baileys for 25 years and have served it hundreds of times in bars, and that is literally the first time I've heard of anyone mixing it with anything. About 35-50ml in a glass with ice is the typical way of serving it.

Drinking half a bottle of it is more comparable to half a bottle of strong wine, not vodka. Wine is typically 12.5-14.5%, Baileys is 17% and vodka is 40% minimum.

MsOtisReflects · 19/12/2025 15:23

What I want to know is whether @ThatBlackCat is ready to investigate new ways of drinking Bailey’s?

Spottingtwerps · 19/12/2025 15:29

The date is a best before date, not an expiry date. I did similar a few nights ago with a bottle with a 2019 date on and I felt absolutely fine! I've a bottle in the cupboard with 2020. The fact you're still alive now with just nauseous suggests you aren't going to expire any more than the Baileys would!

I don't know how you work that out! Baileys has 17% alcohol (you can see that on the picture posted by OP). A typical white wine has 12.5-14.5% and a strong red might have up to 16%. You might find a port at 17%, but some go up to 22% and a sherry is typically around 20%. There's an awful lot of unnecessary tearing out of hair going on in a thread about a reasonably mild alcohol.

MyMiniMetro · 19/12/2025 15:45

lol. Is this for real? The half a bottle of Baileys will be why you feel ill.

Bailey’s is full of sugar and alcohol. It will probably keep forever. The flavour can change after the best before date I guess, and I believe it can separate…. but I promise you, you’ll be fine.

Your Gran is a card though- gifting 7-8 year old unwanted booze. Was it hers that entire time, or did she win it in a tombola recently or even purchased it from a dodgy corner shop?

Shittyyear2025 · 19/12/2025 16:09

Says on the label a full bottle is 11.9 units. You've drunk the equivalent of 6 gins - no wonder you're feeling a bit ropey!

LoveHartnett · 19/12/2025 16:24

I drank curdled Baileys and lived to tell the tale

Etiennethemad · 19/12/2025 17:52

If you're well enough to post this you probably ain't gonna die.

Mydadsbirthday · 19/12/2025 17:55

Won’t repeat what everyone else said about the amount you drank but to a PP - who the hell tops up Bailey’s with milk?
you pour it over ice or into coffee maybe.
