babasaclover · 17/12/2025 20:00

Right so they are gross - I’ve tried soaking in bleach after use I’ve tried it all and at the moment just keep buying a new one every month.

what do you do if you don’t use them?

if you’re going to come on and give me shit don’t bother, I’ve got OCD so cannot just do as you say but am looking for help

I’v broken a couple of toilet brushes in my time didn’t know my own strength.

bonesandbooth2025 · 17/12/2025 20:04

If you’ve got OCD then it’s different anyway - why not look at one of the toilet duck type ones? Disposable

I'd like to know the answer to this, they are gross, I've thrown a few away too

Katemax82 · 17/12/2025 20:07

I cake the loo in thick bleach several times a day it's spotless

Talipesmum · 17/12/2025 20:09

Have you tried the silicone ones? They don’t get “bits” stuck in the bristles in the same way, much easier to clean.

ShesTheAlbatross · 17/12/2025 20:12

I have a silicone one, after use I spray it throughly with a bleach spray and rest it on the rim of the loo, held in place by the seat and lid with the brush part over the toilet bowl, so it can dry.

The silicone ones seem to get less “stuff” caught in them, and dry more easily. It’s never going to be the most sanitary thing in the house, but I don’t think mine is too bad, given what it’s used for.

Soak them in bleach and hot water.

Top tip. Put bleach in/round toilet bowl of your toilet and leave in there (don't flush) before you go, after you have been flush and there won't be a problem as nothing "sticks". Then you always have a clean toilet brush for when you clean.

TheWibble · 17/12/2025 20:15

I hate traditional toilet brushes. Silicone brushes are a revelation! I genuinely love mine.

Sorry to be gross - but that means you are going to splash bleach onto your skin - in one way or another. It’s a really bad idea…

SoLongLuminosity · 17/12/2025 20:16

What are you doing to them that needs that much replacing?!

I flush.after the toilet, squirt some hand-wash down, scrub, flush, flush again to wash the brush and dunk it back in the pot. Its been going 10 years and still looks new.

I don't even use that much bleach, mine is spotless too. I can't bear a toilet brush sitting there.. bleach works fine

Rainallnight · 17/12/2025 20:17

Silicone. I rinse mine in a fresh flush after the ‘main’ flush and that keeps it free of, um, residue.

DinoLil · 17/12/2025 20:19

These things! I've used them for a couple of years.

Springflowersyay · 17/12/2025 20:22

I use the toilet duck things.
A long stick with a gripper on the end. A button on the top operates the gripping motion. Put a disposable papery thing covered in cleaner in the gripper (hands don’t make contact with the gripper end of the stick). Clean and then release the gripper with the button and flush the papery thing away.
I hate, hate, hate toilet brushes!

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 17/12/2025 20:22

I use silicone for dirtier jobs, as it rinses clean easily. I still have a bristle one as I find it keeps the limescale clear better. I basically use that on the loo when it’s clean.

Remember bacteria aren’t an issue in the ‘right’ place. It doesn’t matter how bacteria laden a loo brush is- it’s only used for cleaning the bacteria laden toilet. As long as bathroom germs stay in the bathroom, it’s ok. It’s when the bugs get where they can cause trouble that’s the problem.

That actually doesn't happen!!

@babasaclover I've recently bought an old house, a massive do-er upper, and it has an ancient 'traditional' toilet from maybe 1970s. The cistern flush is incredible and so powerful that everything is flushed. I've not had to use a toilet brush since I moved in. So that's maybe an option, to buy a late 20th century toilet?

Starship74 · 17/12/2025 20:37

I bought a toiet brush from Amazon where you can replace the screw on brush, it came with the long stick and 4 spare brushes.

luckylavender · 17/12/2025 20:13

Soak them in bleach and hot water.

Bleach is meant to be used with cold water.
It's less effective with hot water apparently

awrbc81 · 17/12/2025 20:56

I hate them too, they actually make me feel nauseous and I’m not really a clean freak or anything.
I used the toilet duck disposable head ones for years but recently bought a silicone “blade”
type one which is much easier to keep clean

Same here

Silicone toilet brushes definitely the way to go

margegunderson · 17/12/2025 21:02

I was brought up in an OCD household. Fucked me right up. I’d suggest there are bigger problems than a bog brush.
Personally I don’t give them a second thought. They’re safe in their little pots when not in use and I don’t lick them.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/12/2025 21:05

I don't live in a hard water area. I have never needed to use a toilet brush to clean the loo.
