Right so they are gross - I’ve tried soaking in bleach after use I’ve tried it all and at the moment just keep buying a new one every month.

what do you do if you don’t use them?

if you’re going to come on and give me shit don’t bother, I’ve got OCD so cannot just do as you say but am looking for help

Bleach is meant to be used with cold water.
It's less effective with hot water apparently

I learned this recently...I also saw my husband fill a bucket with steaming hot water and bleach to clean the patio after a sewage incident. I helpfully pointed out the water was meant to be cold so his shoulders slumped and he kicked the bucket over (in a ott petulant child way but joking)

Don't have them, hate them hanging around. I just use tissue to wipe anything off that's above the water line when finished and then a little bleach. But, this works fairly well - flush the loo just before pooping. Stops it sticking so much 😀

Me too. I always give the toilet a wee clean after I’ve gone and flush away tissues used. Toilet is always spotless

Spidey66 · 17/12/2025 23:25

I’m another silicone brush fan. Don’t get caked in shit and miles easier to clean.

If it’s gross you’re doing it wrong. Mine looks like new. Obviously I’m not going to lick it but it’s clean.

Put product in loo.

Brush.

Flush, wash brush in the flushing water.

Lie brush on side of loo and close lid, let brush drip dry into the loo.

Put brush back in brush holder.

So many people seem to be loving silicone brushes on this thread but I just can't get on with them - am I using mine wrong? I just don't seem to be able to scrub hard enough with it. I do live in a really hard water area though so I do need to give it a decent going over to get all the scale off.

If hard water, you need to gently brush every day.

Skyrmion · 17/12/2025 23:57

I hate the ones sitting in a pot! Just why, when there are options like those (photo incoming).
Clean with bleach or toilet cleaner, flush and rinse brush while flushing, let dry like a previous poster had said, handle stuck under the seat, and put it back into its HOLDER, not a pot.

I bleach sometimes but also use tissue to wipe any shit stains in between 😇 even just slightly below the waterline.

"if you’re going to come on and give me shit don’t bother" - reckless 🤨

This brush is an invaluable 'find':

I have a silicone one. But I always wipe away anything left over, flush then use the brush. Wash and then rinse. Never leaves anything in the holder and I’ve had it for years

Teenagerantruns · 18/12/2025 00:33

I dont understand toilet brushes, they seem gross to me. I just clean toilet a couple of times a week with bleach and a wipe. Why does a toilet need a brush?

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 18/12/2025 00:36

Biker47 · 17/12/2025 21:54

Rinse them in bleach water then stick them in the dishwasher, before the next time you clean the dishwasher.

Don’t be insane

What’s having OCD got to do with toilet brushes ?

Not really sure. I think it's to indicate that while nobody like the truth that they're, at base, just a fleshy tube into which food is inserted and shit comes out of the other end, she really, especially, doesn't like it.
Disregard if you've actually been diagnosed.

TinyHousemouse · 18/12/2025 00:45

Silicone blade one. Begone the days of the icky brush, hello easy to clean thingy that doesn’t give me the heebie jeebies

You obviously don't live in a hard water area. Limescale forms and gets stained. It needs scrubbing off even when harpic 100% limescale remover is left on it for half an hour

mumofoneAloneandwell · 17/12/2025 23:02

I just buy one a month for £1 xx

Dear lord the waste! Your monthly loo brushes will sit in landfill for hundreds of years and break down to microplastics polluting the earth: what a legacy to leave for future generations!

NotForCrumbs · 18/12/2025 07:01

The silicone ones are better. No one has died from using the other kind, though. I have OCD and I use disposable plastic gloves to clean the loo. Old kitchen scrubbers that I then throw away. Bleach sometimes.

Gettingbysomehow · 18/12/2025 07:02

Bristles are disgusting and Im certainly not a clean freak. I'll be looking into silicone too.

Owly11 · 18/12/2025 07:02

SoLongLuminosity · 17/12/2025 20:16

What are you doing to them that needs that much replacing?!

I flush.after the toilet, squirt some hand-wash down, scrub, flush, flush again to wash the brush and dunk it back in the pot. Its been going 10 years and still looks new.

So you flush the toilet three times every time you go to the toilet? Wow you are wasting a fuck of a lot of water there. No wonder the government are having to invest in new reservoirs at the moment.

I’ve been diagnosed for years and it’s a yucky job. I don’t even want a cleaner because they are unlikely to go along with my strict toilet cleaning routines.

Zanatdy · 18/12/2025 07:05

I couldn’t survive without one as health issue means one is definitely required! Otherwise I don’t think i’d need one, but is handy to have. I have the silicone style one which is better.

NemesisInferior · 17/12/2025 23:02

Not to mention using bleach willy-nilly is horrible for the environment.

Throwing plastic brushes away every week isn't good for the environment either.

@babasaclover I've recently bought an old house, a massive do-er upper, and it has an ancient 'traditional' toilet from maybe 1970s. The cistern flush is incredible and so powerful that everything is flushed. I've not had to use a toilet brush since I moved in. So that's maybe an option, to buy a late 20th century toilet?

This is amazing. So we have 3 toilets and one came with the house so at least 20 years old and is better - not as old as yours but good. Each newer one is worse! Hadn’t really thought about that before.

would love an older house with high ceilings :-)
