Right so they are gross - I’ve tried soaking in bleach after use I’ve tried it all and at the moment just keep buying a new one every month.

what do you do if you don’t use them?

if you’re going to come on and give me shit don’t bother, I’ve got OCD so cannot just do as you say but am looking for help

I have never owned one and never will. Neither did my parents.

What do I do?

Usually a double flush does the job and a slug of bleach at the same time.

OR Put some loo paper in the toilet first so it catches the poo (and it doesn't stick to the pan.)

Flush the loo several times if necessary.

Use bleach (I know MN freaks out at bleach but in the real world people use it.)

If all else fails and you have to clean it, use loo paper and wipe the pan where you can, but not under the water line obviously.

Gone down a rabbit hole on this. Well, chatgpt says toilet brushes are a essential component of the toilet clean as they provide the mechanical action to break up the germs. Apparently after three or four days the germs group together under the toilet rim in a colony and create a biofilm chemical shield that bleach alone can't penetrate. The toilet brush scrub rips open the biofilm exposing the germs so they get bleached.

Feel kinda sorry for those germ blighters now knowing they go to such effort to cling on for dear life against the bleach.

The more you look into it the worse it gets 😂

But there is a difference between using a brush to clean the loo (under the rim etc) and cleaning it after a poo.

The easiest thing to do is put some loo paper in the loo first and it catches the poo so it doesn't stick to the pan.

KingfisherBluey · 19/12/2025 07:54

@babasaclover If this is your kids making it a mess, tell them to line the pan with loo paper and it stops the poo sticking.

I also think more modern style toilets are to blame because they seem to have a curve/ shelf where poo lands rather than it falling straight into the pan.

Get a silicone one like this. I love mine, much more hygienic and gets under the rim better. Germ-Free Genie https://share.google/JEL1raSjqqh76tODg

Yes lime the toilet with paper it’s more that it sticks to side of pan - not sure how they angle their bums 😂. Modern toilets suck though yes!

That's a lot of loo roll to be placing down.

Put a bag of ice down the toilet and flush it clears blockages

Do you take the ice out of the bag?

How does it clean it?

It really is! (I promise I don't have shares in the company that makes them, lol)

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 19/12/2025 16:35

Get silicone ones. They're brilliant. Great for any toilet blockages too!

DemonsandMosquitoes · 19/12/2025 19:09

Just squirt bleach down the loo. No brush.

I haven’t rft and haven’t much to suggest apart from the fact I have never recovered from the disclosure by a Mumsnetter many years ago that they put theirs in the dishwasher to clean! 😬

😮

Bleach is useless in a hard water area. I had the response until I remembered visiting a friend living in a hard water area. I got a glass of water from the tap it was cloudy and thick. Her washing machine was constantly breaking down, bathroom needed an elbow grease scrub with boiling water.

Of course bleach works in hard water. Half the country or more is hard water and we use bleach. You're talking about limescale which is not the same issue.

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 20/12/2025 21:43

I live in a very hard water area and never had an issue with bleach working.

Negroany · 21/12/2025 06:13

Bleach "works" in hard water, of course it does (I regularly have to bleach my sink as it gets stained by tea). But it won't remove limescale.

For that you need a limescale remover, or vinegar, or brute force (scrubbing with pumice, for example).

While the limescale remains, the bleach will struggle to work as grime clings to the scale - the bleach will "bleach" it, but it will still be there, and the build up continues.

Exactly.

So you use limescale remover as well and a brush. But it's not a brush that lives by the loo, but is kept in another place just for removing the limescale.

Some of the posts here seem to imply we were all born yesterday!

But OP was asking about how to remove 'skid marks' after each flush rather than general toilet cleaning, I think.

gamerchick · 21/12/2025 09:07

Reading these threads makes me wish bleach wasn't so easy to buy.

Magic sponges gets tannin off sinks. You don't need bleach, just one of those and water.

Toilet duck fresh brush. Game changer for me - got one beside every loo. Flushable, biodegradable cleaning pads & you can also use the stick thing with a bit of bleach and loo roll.

No need to touch anything, no need to have a gopping brush in a soup of bleach and tag nuts sat in the bathroom 🤮. No need to chuck a load of plastic in landfill, especially if you’re throwing them out so frequently.

‘Tag nuts’ you just made me laugh out loud! When I taught in Sheffield, my Year 11s taught me what ‘ cleg nuts’ are- I presume the same thing? 😂

Magic sponges are not supposed to be used on stainless steel, they scratch it.

I do sometimes just scrub it with the scourer, but sometimes I like to use bleach.

Not that I asked for advice on this matter.

PonkyPonky · 21/12/2025 20:47

Teach your kids to make a hot cross bun before they go and you won’t have skids to contend with. If they somehow shit around that then just put bleach down and leave for a while.
I’ve never needed a toilet brush and I live in an extremely hard water area with sons! I just clean the toilet properly once a week, do the hot cross bun method and put bleach down every now and then.
