Right so they are gross - I’ve tried soaking in bleach after use I’ve tried it all and at the moment just keep buying a new one every month.

what do you do if you don’t use them?

if you’re going to come on and give me shit don’t bother, I’ve got OCD so cannot just do as you say but am looking for help

You need a silicone one.

Seems to be the way to go. Better than all the brushes bought every month filling a landfill.

I cake the loo in thick bleach several times a day it's spotless

No it isn't. You're just dying the poo and limescale white.

Cheese55 · 18/12/2025 08:51

Germs in a toilet stay right there and are not going to jump up and kill you. The toilet doesn't need to be soaked in bleach. It is used for one thing and you are not eating off it. Think about the impact on the environment

Dolphinnoises · 18/12/2025 08:55

I use silicone ones and also harpic deep clean toilet tablets - they advise you to put the brush in the loo with the tablet to give it a deep clean at the same time

So you flush the toilet three times every time you go to the toilet? Wow you are wasting a fuck of a lot of water there. No wonder the government are having to invest in new reservoirs at the moment.

Mate, we're one of the wettest countries in the world- the fact that we can't seem to stop fluctuating between droughts and floods and climate change is not my fault.

I don't shit every time i go to the toilet. I use eco toilet paper, eco products, don't flush bleach or other chemicals harmful to wildlife and also i havent replaced my plastic toilet brush in a decade and have no plans to. I also use eco menstrual products. I think my conscious is clear around my environmental impact on using the toilet.

But please, do try and blame me for the lack of water in the whole country because I flush the toilet three times on the occasions I take a shit. While you're at it, tell me how many kids you have because I bet you have more than me and they will be having a greater impact across the board, as well as all needing to flush the toilet.

Eta- I also have I also have one of those half flush things installed so I can choose that too.

Ncstressy · 18/12/2025 09:14

I get the Ikea ones that are about a pound.

anyway, I try to rinse and rub the bristles on the edge bit that’s under the waterline whilst the toilet is flushing. This ensures almost nothing left on it. Then air dry, then put back in holder.

I do throw them out, not that often though - every couple of years.

we don’t use them that much though. I usually put harpic in the toilet rather than just brushing shit. And try not to shit on the porcelain sides.

Genuine question for those who say you don a pair of marigolds and use a scrubber beneath the water line to scrub away any shitty residue . Where do you rinse the marigolds and scrubber and where do you store till the next use?

When I see the toilet brush thread pop up every so often this method is mentioned but I can’t see that it’s more hygienic than a brush. 🤔

Instead of using marigolds, I would use disposable gloves for that kind of task. Then no need for cleaning and storage of them.

If it’s gross you’re doing it wrong. Mine looks like new. Obviously I’m not going to lick it but it’s clean.

Put product in loo.

Brush.

Flush, wash brush in the flushing water.

Lie brush on side of loo and close lid, let brush drip dry into the loo.

Put brush back in brush holder.

This ^^^

That's not true, bleach removes the poop. And not all people live in a limescale area...

Love the comment over kids, and very very true. My brother told me once (who is childless) that he could fly to New York every week and still not have the environmental impact as bad as having a child. He was getting it in the neck by an eco-nut in the pub about his lifestyle choices (which are nothing other than ordinary btw).

No idea if true but I got his sentiment.

Balloonhearts · 18/12/2025 10:28

I use those ones with the ejectable pads.

Janeeyrre · 18/12/2025 10:31

I use the Toilet duck disposable one, weirdly you can never find the handle anywhere, took me ages to order one online. You can find the cloth bits in supermarket though.

I saw one on instagram where you grip a bit of tissue with the end, cheaper that buying the toilet duck wipe things.

Top tip. Put bleach in/round toilet bowl of your toilet and leave in there (don't flush) before you go, after you have been flush and there won't be a problem as nothing "sticks". Then you always have a clean toilet brush for when you clean.

I wouldn't do this - if you wee on bleach it produces chloramine gas which is a toxic lung irritant.

blueshoes · 18/12/2025 11:33

To get rid of limescale, I used Kilrock Spirit of Salts which was the good stuff. Now I cannot buy it anywhere for love or money. Anyone know why?

SapphireSeptember · 18/12/2025 12:26

I've had the same cheap one from Tesco for a year. The only discolouration is the harmless orangey mould you get in bathrooms.

Heyhelga · 18/12/2025 13:01

I don't buy the germy toilet brush theory. If any microscopic germs can survive clinging onto the toilet brush getting dunked and swished in bleach as part of the scrub then good luck to them but in all likelihood no germs survive the bleach scrub.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 18/12/2025 13:36

People are so bloody squeamish and germphobic. Seriously what do you think is going to happen if you have a rinsed loo brush sitting in the corner of your bathroom? Instead you're wasting loads of water, resources and dumping toxic bleach down your loo several times a day. (That's not good for you by the way)

Not talking to those with actual diagnosed OCD obviously

That is what I do, I have a sillicone brush, clean the toilet in the morning and then bung bleach in it and put the brush in, go out and leave it soaking

Don’t be insane

Toilet seats are quick release ones as well, so every now and then they go in the dishwasher too.

Putting toilet brushes and seats in a dishwasher that you also use for surfaces you eat off is fucking grim.

A simple google will tell the the potential health risks.

Ooh, yes, my childfree sister was being lectured by an eco-zealot, and she told the EZ that she had less environmental impact than EZ plus her three kids and several grandchildren, and can live her life how she bloody well likes!

HostaCentral · 18/12/2025 14:57

Well mine just sit in the corner festering away. I empty the holder every so often and sometimes leave it in the beachy toilet water to soak. They basically last forever.... I am not licking them, so not really an issue. Oh, and I have mild OCD too.....

purplehearts21 · 18/12/2025 15:19

I use these from Amazon

Toilet brushes - I just keep replacing
DustyMaiden · 18/12/2025 15:45

I use the duck handle but not the pads. Just bunched up toilet paper and sanitizer
