Right so they are gross - I’ve tried soaking in bleach after use I’ve tried it all and at the moment just keep buying a new one every month.

what do you do if you don’t use them?

if you’re going to come on and give me shit don’t bother, I’ve got OCD so cannot just do as you say but am looking for help

Top tip. Put bleach in/round toilet bowl of your toilet and leave in there (don't flush) before you go, after you have been flush and there won't be a problem as nothing "sticks". Then you always have a clean toilet brush for when you clean.

You should use bleach like this , its dangerous you could splash yourself when you use the loo , it's also bad for the environment and your wallet.
Just flush or pour water down the loo jyst before you use it. This will help to stop anything from sticking to the toilet.

We rince through occasionally with a bag of ice cubes

Cursula · 17/12/2025 21:14

@wakeboarder would you like a diagram? I know how much MN loves a diagram….

JulieJo · 17/12/2025 21:38

I hate most toilet brushes, any with metal handles quickly rust. White brushes seem to stain.
The best one so far is a black one with a glass pot from Tesco.
I use toilet duck around the toilet bowl and under the rim, use the brush to scrub, then flush to clean the brush.

justabigdisco · 17/12/2025 21:40

Get the ikea ones, they’re about £1.50 and the bristles are black. Game changer. I don’t clean mine because a) I don’t see anything on them and b) it’s a toilet brush, who cares if it’s got poo on, you’re not brushing your teeth with it

Hankunamatata · 17/12/2025 21:48

Went for years without toilet brush. I put toilet cleaner around, leave for 10mins. Then use hands in rubber gloves and good scrub with handful toilet paper and flush.

But this is risky tbf. Neptune's Kiss now becomes the kiss of death! 🤣 Well, not quite, but bleach splashing on your bits isn't great.

Biker47 · 17/12/2025 21:54

Rinse them in bleach water then stick them in the dishwasher, before the next time you clean the dishwasher.

Franjipanl8r · 17/12/2025 22:04

Are people using them wrong?! Flush the loo, then toilet cleaner all around, then scrub with the brush, then rinse the loo brush in the flushing cleaner water and put away again.

Mine never has “bits” in it or lumps of anything. If I can see a spec of poo on the brush, I hold it in the loo while flushing again to rinse it off.

Using all that bleach is so bad for the environment. As pp has said, the toilet brush is just sitting there, it doesn't matter what it was used for.It won't harm you.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 17/12/2025 22:19

Toilet duck fresh brush. Game changer for me - got one beside every loo. Flushable, biodegradable cleaning pads & you can also use the stick thing with a bit of bleach and loo roll.

No need to touch anything, no need to have a gopping brush in a soup of bleach and tag nuts sat in the bathroom 🤮. No need to chuck a load of plastic in landfill, especially if you’re throwing them out so frequently.

Northerngirlabroad · 17/12/2025 22:20

So many people seem to be loving silicone brushes on this thread but I just can't get on with them - am I using mine wrong? I just don't seem to be able to scrub hard enough with it. I do live in a really hard water area though so I do need to give it a decent going over to get all the scale off.

EarthAndInstinct · 17/12/2025 22:25

Eep. Toilet brushes. I could only consider if single use and disposable. If I had OCD like the OP, it would be even worse.

That may be what I do, but I can tell you not everyone does, especially when loos are used by a whole houseful of people, teens, visitors, workmen. There’s something peculiarly sickening about picking up a toilet brush and seeing a cornflake of some random person’s shite stuck in the bristles. No thanks!

IndigoBabble · 17/12/2025 22:27

Silicone brushes are fab. Have bought cheap ones in the supermarket and the are as good as the Joseph ones.

Put a bottle of Coca Cola down the loo and leave it for a few hours. It honestly works.

The risk with this is if you do a number 1 whilst doing a number 2. Urine should never mix with bleach as it can cause a toxic gas

What do you mean?

Happyjoe · 17/12/2025 22:50

Don't have them, hate them hanging around. I just use tissue to wipe anything off that's above the water line when finished and then a little bleach. But, this works fairly well - flush the loo just before pooping. Stops it sticking so much 😀

Createausername1970 · 17/12/2025 22:52

I dont have one for the same reasons.

If there is any "debris" remaining on the side of the bowl after flushing, then wipe it off with a bit of loo paper.

I clean the loo regularly, I use one of those washing up sponges with a rough green side and wear marigolds, and give it a bleach and then get in there with the sponge, in all the cracks and crevices, and as far down the ubend as I can reach without my marigolds filling up with water.

TheQuirkyMaker · 17/12/2025 22:56

I agree toilet brushes are gross! I buy the cheap plastic supermarket ones- they used to be 75p but are now £1.50. As soon as they show the slightest discoloration, out they go! I would never buy expensive ones that people might keep for a while!

NemesisInferior · 17/12/2025 23:02

Cursula · 17/12/2025 20:16

Sorry to be gross - but that means you are going to splash bleach onto your skin - in one way or another. It’s a really bad idea…

Not to mention using bleach willy-nilly is horrible for the environment.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 17/12/2025 23:02

I just buy one a month for £1 xx
