Anyone worried about this new flu?

Starrynight999 · 17/12/2025 08:16

So my kids in 2022 had flu A and my 2 year old got sepsis after being ignored by doctors s just a virus for a week after multiple trips, he recovered and he is ok.. skip to last year they then got flu A again a much milder strain but we’re still very poorly and now this year it’s everywhere again and seems to be an awful strain and I’m just dreading it.. before anyone says.. non of us are vaccinated we are to to date with all vaccinations and I’m really not an anti vaxer.. but I don’t know how I feel about the flu spray if I’m honest.. doesn’t look like they are working much.. I’m just also anxious about it.. how is everyone else feeling?

If you were that concerned you’d get the flu jab.

Premierinnok · 17/12/2025 08:19

So you declined the school giving the vaccine?

This.

Slipperati · 17/12/2025 08:20

All vaccinated here and yes worried about it. People we know who’ve had it have been totally wiped out.

sleepyjessie · 17/12/2025 08:20

Yeah I was with you until you said you refused the vaccine. Why would you do that when your child was seriously unwell with the flu?!

Pranksters · 17/12/2025 08:20

Apparently the flu vaccine is targeting the right strain this year.. I’m a children’s nurse and we are full of the flu.

AnneLovesGilbert · 17/12/2025 08:20

Staggering you know how dangerous it can be, especially to children, and wouldn’t do the one thing you know will help protect them.

Nannyfannybanny · 17/12/2025 08:22

Especially in your case, you should have all been vaccinated. A lot of people on Mumsnet think it's just a cold,my local hospital and surgery have brought back mandatory masks for patients and staff.

NowThatsWhatICallRecent · 17/12/2025 08:22

I've had a flu jab but I'm still concerned as apparently it only offers limited protection against this year's strain. I don't take well to respiratory viruses - even a cold knocks me out and it takes about three weeks for me to feel properly better. It seems inevitable that I'll catch it if it's going round - I work in an office and it's always full of people coughing and sniffing at this time of year.

JacknDiane · 17/12/2025 08:27

Im actually dreading it too @Starrynight999. It does feel totally inevitable. And I dont think masks help. Unless they are proper grade masks.
Anyway, I've had the vaccine. But I work in a busy shop with customers coughing and spluttering right at your till. And trains full of coughing sniffing people.
I just feel its inevitable this year.

ObliviousCoalmine · 17/12/2025 08:30

You probably need to elaborate on the logic behind watching your child go through sepsis and then “not being sure” about a vaccine that could help them avoid the same illness again…

”I’m terribly worried I’ll drown on this boat trip but I’m not wearing a life jacket” 😵‍💫

IkaBaar · 17/12/2025 08:31

According to info from our NHS Board kids are 78% less likely to be admitted to hospital if they are vaccinated. So I’d get them vaccinated!

Fraudornot · 17/12/2025 08:31

Why so some people get it and not others? Is it possible to have a mild dose of it? I had something the past few days but was able to work from home through it so it defo wasn’t flu.

Simbaonedaythiswillallbeyours · 17/12/2025 08:33

None of you are vaccinated but you are online posting about being worried after you have all had flu before and know how bad it can be? What do you think people will say?

What is the logic? Do you think a runny nose from a tiny spray in the nose is more dangerous?

The mind boggles. Get a vaccination and stop posting for attention. Ridiculous.

ExpressCheckout · 17/12/2025 08:34

@Starrynight999 I don’t know how I feel about the flu spray if I’m honest.. doesn’t look like they are working much

Do you have a PhD in medical epidemiology? No? Well, then just follow expert advice and get them vaccinated.

bigsoftcocks · 17/12/2025 08:35

This has to be goady

TheatricalLife · 17/12/2025 08:36

No I'm not worried at all. What's the point? You'll either get it or not, there isn't anything you can really do about it until it happens. You deal with it if and when.

Tillow4ever · 17/12/2025 08:37

I had whatever is going around last week. It completely wiped me out. 2 of my kids had it too (13 & 17). The 13 year old and I are vaccinated, the 17 year old not. I would definitely say the vaccine helped us to not be as sick as we otherwise might have been.

I would strongly recommend you get the vaccine whilst you can, if you aren’t already too late. I really don’t understand why you won’t! It’s proven to be safe and effective, kids have been having it for years now. You get children are particularly susceptible to becoming ill with the flu, and yours have a history of being extremely ill with it. It sounds like a no brainer to me.

Maybe if you tell us your concerns about the vaccine we can alleviate your concerns with evidence?

Of course it’s possible to have a mild dose. Some people will be asymptomatic - remember Covid?

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 17/12/2025 08:39

Crikey. I had to decline it for DS15 as he's ASD and has violently refused it every year since the first sniff jab was given and he was horribly sick in the toilets after! If that wasn't the case I'd have him vaccinated every year. Why would you not have them done if you can?

I've had the vaccine in October (asthma) and DD17 was jabbed this week to hopefully protect ahead of exams in the new year.

I'm actually not that worried. It isn't a super flu. It's just slightly changed strain and more people have it sooner in the season.

That said I'm washing my hands when I get back from the shops.

Buttcraic · 17/12/2025 08:39

Not worried, but none of us are 'vulnerable'. I don't believe i've ever had flu. Its possible our pensioners may get carried off by it, but that risk is always there - flu, covid, pneumonia, a fall...

Wishiwasatailor · 17/12/2025 08:43

We (DH DD2y annd myself) are just recovering from flu it's day 10 and still feeling rough and lethargic. Everyone fully vaccinated and it still floored us all. We've all been confined to bed and been quite unwell high temps, loss of appetite, shortness of breath and reduced output. I'm an advanced children's nurse practitioner in a&e so consider myself quite hardy to illnesses and I have contemplated taking her in to get checked. I dread to think what it would have been like if we hadn't had some protection from the vaccine.

Starrynight999 · 17/12/2025 08:45

Wow! I understand people think agree with the vaccination but wasn’t expecting so much hate for it, I take it all of you felt safe covid vaxing your kids? I’m not saying I’m against it, my daughter used to have it every year and one of them years had a very funny turn with it so wasn’t sure again and my youngest was off at the time it was given and have thought about getting it done since but wasn’t sure wasn’t saying I was completely against it ..

If you want to gamble with your kids' health, OP, then that's your prerogative. It's a shame for the children who aren't protected, but sadly, many children are disadvantaged because of the poor choices made by their parents - that's just the lottery of life and there isn't really much we can do about it.

It does seem very strange, though, that you would start a thread on the Internet worrying about flu when you haven't even bothered to take basic precautions to protect your dc.
