Anyone worried about this new flu?

So my kids in 2022 had flu A and my 2 year old got sepsis after being ignored by doctors s just a virus for a week after multiple trips, he recovered and he is ok.. skip to last year they then got flu A again a much milder strain but we’re still very poorly and now this year it’s everywhere again and seems to be an awful strain and I’m just dreading it.. before anyone says.. non of us are vaccinated we are to to date with all vaccinations and I’m really not an anti vaxer.. but I don’t know how I feel about the flu spray if I’m honest.. doesn’t look like they are working much.. I’m just also anxious about it.. how is everyone else feeling?

So did I have the Covid vaccine but didn’t get my children vaccinated.. they had Covid 3x and were absolutely fine

Covid and this flu are different things.

Ive had covid jab, wasnt really offered to kids but as they had both had cvid before didnt really see the point as barely affected them and both in good health.

I get a flu jab every year and the kids get the spray thing at school each year. No idea why you'd turn that down if you are worried about getting the flu.

Taweofterror · 17/12/2025 09:24

I was worried enough to get a jab when I don't normally as I'm not eligible. It's not massively effective for adults but worth a go.

As others have said, it's proving reasonably effective for kids though so I don't understand why you wouldn't get it? I'd rather my kids had an upset tummy than sepsis.

Not vaccinated here and never get ill.
those that take every vaccine are the ones that seem to get ill, and then tell me it would have been worse if they’re not been vaccinated…. But I reckon they wouldn’t have got ill!

I get vaccinated every year for both flu and COVID. As I stated above, I haven't had flu in at least 20 years. I've had COVID exactly once.

Vaccines work. HTH.

Wow! I understand people think agree with the vaccination but wasn’t expecting so much hate for it, I take it all of you felt safe covid vaxing your kids? I’m not saying I’m against it, my daughter used to have it every year and one of them years had a very funny turn with it so wasn’t sure again and my youngest was off at the time it was given and have thought about getting it done since but wasn’t sure wasn’t saying I was completely against it ..

Yes, I gave all 3 of my kids the Covid vaccine the moment they qualified for it, because I didn’t want them getting seriously ill from Covid.

The flu vaccine isn’t new, so I don’t get the comparison - I definitely understand people that didn’t get their kids the Covid vaccine for that reason. The chances are the year your daughter had a funny turn, it was nothing to do with the vaccine if she’d had it for years without issue… and do you really think a “funny turn” isn’t worth risking over possible flu or sepsis?

I've had every vaccine available to me and can count any episodes of illness over the last 15 years on the fingers of one hand.

Conthin12 · 17/12/2025 09:39

What do you think the medics would suggest OP? The medics who saved your child’s LIFE after contracting sepsis from flu

My mum got flu last year with the vaccine and the consultant in A&E told her that she would’ve died without the vaccine.

cannynotsay · 17/12/2025 09:41

Regardless if it’s the bad strain or not protect your kids!!!

Floogal · 17/12/2025 09:44

vanillalattes · 17/12/2025 08:18

If you were that concerned you’d get the flu jab.

Easier said than done. You have to apply online. And that's if the pharmacy or chemist has any

JudgeBread · 17/12/2025 09:45

So it's nearly killed your kid once and you thought "ah fuck it I'll chance it again, he only nearly died"??

Amazing.

Comparison to the covid vaccine is also bone-headed as the flu vaccine has been around a lot longer and has far fewer unknowns. For someone who isn't anti vacc you sure do sound like one of them.

Not for the children

You don’t have to apply. You just book it. And her children. Are eligible for it for free! Of course they’ve run out of them now. It’s mid-December. Vaccine programmes started running in September.

Davros · 17/12/2025 09:59

@ArcticGrass I was just going to suggest the episode of More or Less about flu. Very interesting

FancyCatSlave · 17/12/2025 10:04

I have all the vaccines. My child has all the vaccines. Because I am not an idiot.

I think anti vaxxers are society’s way of refining genetics, breeds out the stupid.

HTH

BuildbyNumbere · 17/12/2025 11:11

Go get them vaccinated 🤦🏻‍♀️ You can’t be that worried!

I didn’t vaccinate my kids against Covid and I didn’t have the vaccine either … none of us were ill. Flu vaccines have been around for ages … it’s pretty standard.

But you’re not posting about Covid vaccine. It’s irrelevant.

You’re understandably worried about your children getting flu after one of them developed a life threatening complication previously. Begs the question why haven’t you vaccinated them? Bonkers.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 17/12/2025 11:25

This is the absolute definition of stupid. You are worried about the flu but haven't had your children vaccinated despite the fact they have been really ill in the past. You've not read up on it, all your opinions are based on a feeling or anecdotal evidence. And when people disagree with you, gently for the most part, you call it hate.

You're not alone, it seems very prevalent all over the world.

Flutterbees · 17/12/2025 11:27

I can understand why you would be so concerned, but I cannot understand why you have not got your family vaccinated.

HansHolbein · 17/12/2025 11:28

A bit, so I made sure we all got the vaccination.

No, my kids didn’t have the Covid vaccine because it wasn’t available for children. Not sure I would have let them have it anyway.

I don’t see any hate, just people who are frustrated by your frankly batshit logic. I always make sure my kids get their vaccines including flu and Covid when they’re offered and as my husband has an underlying health issue we are both vaxxed too. As a result, I’m mindful of the flu and making sure we don’t spread it around as the vaccines apparently don’t offer as much protection due to it mutating, but probably less worried than someone who hasn’t protected their family with the vaccine.

ImFineItsAllFine · 17/12/2025 11:29

Starrynight999 · 17/12/2025 09:01

Yeah it’s not just me.. I’m it against it all I just see lots and lots of people saying that they have been flu jabbed this year and it making no difference or they seem to be the ones that are getting it

But the real point of the flu vaccine isn't to stop you getting flu altogether. It's to reduce the risk of getting it so severely you end up hospitalized with complications, or worse.

People who get flu after being vaccinated can't be sure it made 'no difference' because they'll never know how much worse they would have had it if they weren't vaccinated.

SusiQ18472638 · 17/12/2025 11:32

I get all normal vaccines but every time my son gets the flu spray he feels really ill with it and has horrible stomach pains/ goes off his food for a week. So we haven’t had it for a while and I’m still not worried. The media loves to whip everybody up and scaremonger, they do the same with flu every single year.

BlueJuniper94 · 17/12/2025 11:37

If I had to write a post to wind up Mumsnet, it would be very similar to this

The media do love to whip it up, especially when there's a proposed doctors strike. Great way to condition public opinion against those selfish over paid doctors abandoning patients when the NHS is on its knees during a flu surge
