Been banned from my local nail salon

I started going to a new salon a few months ago. I went three times and to be honest, I was never totally happy with the service I had been receiving. The atmosphere wasn't as welcoming as I liked and the results weren't what I was happy to pay for. So I decided to just do my own from now on.

My mum goes to the same nail salon, and the owner asked her why I had cancelled my appointments. Because she was put on the spot, my mum told her that I was now working Saturdays as well, so couldn't go anymore.

Yesterday I was getting my hair done and the owner of this old salon walked in and sat down next to me. She clocked it was me, sort of looked me up and down in surprise, and turned away from me. It was a bit awkward but it's not the end of the world, in my view.

This morning I've woken up to this email from them:

"(My name),
This message serves as formal notice that you are prohibited from booking or receiving services at any of our nail salons across the (local) area, effective immediately.
This decision has been made at ownership level following a review of your conduct. We have concluded that you provided false and misleading information regarding your availability and intentions as a client. On that basis, we believe your actions amount to a misrepresentation of circumstances and may be considered fraudulent in nature.
As a business, we reserve the absolute right to refuse service where we believe honesty and trust have been compromised. This determination is final.
Any current or future appointments made under your name, or on your behalf, will be cancelled without notice. Do not contact the business regarding this matter.
(Owner’s name)"

AIBU or is this really not necessary? I'd understand if I was a long standing client who had been going for years, but I'd been three times. I don't really see what's fraudulent about it?!

The woman running the salon is the owner? I live in a small town, it’s her salon that she’s owned for years now

Does she actually have any other salons, as per your banishment notice?

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/12/2025 15:37

Oh that would be going on a local FB group, this is what local FB groups were made for!

Let her be hoist by her own petard, or as I like to think of it - propelled further into the shite by her own fart.

What an utter loon.

TroysMammy · 14/12/2025 15:41

Wouldn't an email like that come under the Malicious Communications Act 2003?.

Yes, there’s one other. The next town over

There’s overreacting then there’s this! OMG, what a bampot 😂 Your instincts about the weird atmosphere were correct then. Karma should get her if this is how she treats people. I would certainly be honest if anyone asks why you stopped going. Otherwise, rise above and grey rock. Sounds like she’d be really petty and troublesome if there was any escalation. Hopefully, she digs her own hole for her business

EmbroideredGardener · 14/12/2025 16:01

Your mum was put on the spot and didher best in the circumstances, no idea why pp are jumping on that point. Why this woman thinks she has any right to knowledge of your availability when you haven't signed a contract or subscription is beyond me! You're well out of it!

Sunflower459 · 14/12/2025 16:08

Accusing people of fraud because they choose to stop using your business is a risky game to play. She sounds mad as a shithouse rat, but still. She could get into trouble throwing around accusations like that . . .

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 14/12/2025 16:10

5128gap · 14/12/2025 11:31

I'd email them back and say
"There is no obligation on a customer of your business to continue to use your services, or to provide you with a reason for no longer doing so. I am entitled to give any reason (or none at all) provided it does not falsely represent your business.
I would strongly advice you take legal advice to ensure you understand the definition of fraud before making unfounded allegations of this nature, which I consider to be malicious.
Please note I do not wish to recieve any further communications from you and should you contact me again, or I become aware you are making false accusations against me, I will be seeking advice regarding what may constitute harassment"

to be fair, such a response is almost as batshit and OTT as the salon's one. just ignore

Completely agree.

If it’s outlook and has the functionality of a thumbs up I would be tempted but otherwise delete and just block.

Salon owner’s name,

Thank you for your bizarre, libellous and spiteful message. I have previously provided no reason for the cancellation of my appointments, “fraudulent” or otherwise, as none has been directly requested of me - you appear unable to tell the difference between my mother, who is too polite to pass on to you what I think of your services, and myself. Please do not ambush clients in future and ask them for information about other people that they may not feel comfortable to disclose, as that is highly unprofessional conduct on your part.

Unfortunately, whilst my mother has always enjoyed getting her nails done at your salon and did not wish to upset you with the truth, I have been extremely disappointed in the service you provide. I do not consider it value for money and have concluded that I would do a better job myself, in the comfort of my own home. I always felt there was an uncomfortable atmosphere when I visited your salon which marred the experience for me, and your email has just underlined for me how right I was to cancel all future appointments with you. Rest assured, I am not at all disappointed to be banned from somewhere I would not entertain revisiting. Please note, I will also be sharing the content of your malicious message with friends and family, as fair warning of your business practices and behaviour.

I think it's ChatGPT.

The salon owner probably put in something like "Draft a short email for me to send to a customer who has lied about why she cancelled her appointment at my nail salon. Tell her I'm officially barring her from booking any more appointments. Make it sound like a solicitor wrote it."

It does sound like that, and not being human it would not realise that the result is absurd overkill. More suitable would be something like: 'I was not impressed to see you having your hair done on a Saturday after claiming that you cancelled your nail appointments because you now work Saturdays. Please note that you are no longer welcome in our salon.' Or even better, nothing at all, because a human being reading back what they had written would probably realise that the client had simply decided not to continue having her nails done there, she was under no obligation to continue, and her reasons were nobody else's business.

Sunflower459 · 14/12/2025 16:16

Is there any chance at all that she’s sent the email to the wrong person, OP?

Sunflower459 · 14/12/2025 16:21

alittlebittiredallthetime · 14/12/2025 11:30

According to my mum, she sat down to get her nails done and the owner walks up to her and said "alittlebittiredallthetime has cancelled the appointments she had booked, why and when will she be rebooking them?". Obviously my mum didn't want to say "she thinks you're crap" so just mumbled about me picking up overtime every Saturday so I couldn't come down and had found somewhere near my work.

Oh, and that’s a GDPR breach. You know, since she’s throwing words like ‘fraud’ around . . .

GreyBeeplus3 · 14/12/2025 16:30

Well she's got complacent then hasn't she?
Big fish liddle pool syndrome....

campista · 14/12/2025 16:31

This is very similar to strange and accusatory mail I have been subjected to for over a year, it's clearly a thing! Strange folk around!

Owly11 · 14/12/2025 16:33

That email made me laugh out loud, stupid twats. Next time you walk past the salon give them the middle finger (with nails beautifully done) 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Alwayswonderedwhy · 14/12/2025 16:36

Absolute batshit. She has far too much time on her hands.

I'd be tempted to print the email out and stick it to the shop window with the comment "I just didn't rebook"

BrassOlive · 14/12/2025 16:42

Hasn't she breached GDPR by telling your Mum you'd cancelled your appointments? I would report her to the Information Commissioner, that'll teach her to be a nasty bully.

PuppyMonkey · 14/12/2025 16:45

Just reply: “Lol.”

Mumofyellows · 14/12/2025 16:46

That’s absolutely mental! What a weird thing to do!

BitOfAWeirdo · 14/12/2025 16:54

She sounds completely unhinged. What an insane reaction.

FollowSpot · 14/12/2025 16:55

That's hilarious.

I actually wonder whether someone got drunk at the salon Christmas Party and got on to an unlocked computer.

However - I would ignore. Do not engage with the crazy. However tempting.

XWKD · 14/12/2025 16:56

I'd be inclined to leave it. If she's that batshit, you have no idea what gossip she'd start spreading about you. I'd tell everyone without contacting her again, and then leave it.
