Need a hand hold - never again letting my DD have a party again!

Posting in AIBU because I have no idea where else to post this. I think I'm just looking for a hand hold tbh.

My DD is 26, lives at home with us. She asked if she could have a few friends over while we were away for the night last night. She assured me it would be "chill" and that she'd clean up after.

We came back this morning and I genuinely felt sick, I'm shaking even typing this. it turned out to be a full-blown house party. Our neighbours have told us there were people coming and going until 3am, loud music, shouting in the garden.

The damage is what has killed me. There is a large burn mark on the living room carpet (which we got fitted in September) which I think has come from a cigarette. The kitchen worktop is has got a chunk missing out of it and DD has admitted that this was from someone opening a beer bottle on it. One of the dining room chairs is completely broken and there are red wine stains all over the sofa cushions. The bathroom door handle is hanging off and the patio door is completely off its hinges. The hot tub is completely ruined, and this is what has made me so angry. The cover was left off it overnight so it is now full of leaves and empty cans. The control panel is not working anymore and there's a crack in it. The TV we have in the garden is also smashed (apparently it got knocked over when someone fell into it) and someone has also spilled red wine on our bedsheets. There is sick in the hallway and in our room too.

DD says she's really sorry and that this was a result of one of her friends putting something about a house party in the group chat, but apparently DD made no effort to get these people out of our house because she was so drunk.

I feel utterly disrespected and I'm livid that she has behaved like this at the age of 26.

AIBU to ban her from having anyone over and insist she pays for all of the damae?

She works yes, but she has endless energy for partying and takes very little responsibility for herself

Time she moves out into the real world.

canuckup · 13/12/2025 21:54

Does she live with you??

Kibble19 · 13/12/2025 21:54

'letting DD have a party''

I thought you were gonna talk about a five year old or something

So did I. Was fully expecting some soft play politics or school mum invite drama.

ThankYouNigel · 13/12/2025 21:55

I’d be absolutely gutted too OP, I’m so house proud and really feel for you reading the damage to your home. Genuinely gutted for you and sending a big hug 💐

MuddlingThrough1724 · 13/12/2025 21:55

You'd be unreasonable not to expect her to have a grovelling apology and pay for every single penny of damage.

SexyFrenchDepression · 13/12/2025 21:55

I just keep reading your OP and cant quote believe it. What awful friends she has also, I had kids and a house at that age, 26, thats a fully fledged adult . I really sorry for you, you must be so upset.

Nevermind17 · 13/12/2025 21:56

Are you insured? Just the carpet, worktop and hot tub will cost thousands to replace. Does she have the money?

I’d be kicking her arse out, she has no respect for you or your home.

Drawmouse · 13/12/2025 21:56

She 100% has to deal with the consequences. Pay for everything, organise everything and then she can move out. My guess would be that she is abusing drugs and so are her friends. 26 years don't ordinarily wreck houses. You would be her and yourself a massive disservice if you let her away with all this. She'd never grow up and will coming back to Mammy & daddy to bail her put for years to come.

CalmShaker · 13/12/2025 21:56

I haven't smoked for 2 months but was so angry after reading this I've gone into garden for one and typing this on phone

She needs to go op

Tourmalines · 13/12/2025 21:56

You feel disrespected because you are being disrespected. I don’t know why you would even need to ask if she has to pay or if you are being unreasonable . Of course she does !!! This is why she takes no responsibility because she knows she can get away with it .

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 13/12/2025 21:56

Go to town on her. She cleans and pays for everything and moves out.

WimpoleHat · 13/12/2025 21:57

She’s 26?! This is the wake up call she needs. Tell her she sorts it out (and pays for it), or she moves out. No excuse at that age.

Ladymuckypuddle · 13/12/2025 21:57

This is actually worrying that she got so drunk she couldn't control who was in the house and what was happening and what about her so called friends? The whole thing is just utter disrespectful to you and your home op. Would your house insurance cover any of the damage? 💐

Hankunamatata · 13/12/2025 21:58

Wtf
I had parties at 18 that caused no damage
Your dd just doesnt care
Add up the cost of all the damage. Dd takes out a loan and pays for it all

See the weird thing is she doesn't drink. There were only 20 people round, but I'd say 14 of those people are only really acquaintances rather than friends. My head is just spinning from this whole thing, I'm tempted to check into the hotel down the road for the night.

Who behaves like that at 26? Incredibly disrespectful. I think it’s perhaps time for her to grow up. Charge her for every penny of damage, every single bit and make her organise all the repairs. Awful behaviour from her.

Kibble19 · 13/12/2025 21:59

I just thought - she’s 26 so presumably her friends are of similar age. Yet this happened because of some “MyFairGreenTurtle is out! Partyyyy!” type WhatsApp chat?

I’m 10 years older than them but surely this isn’t how people in their mid 20s behave? It’s like something out of American Pie.

saraclara · 13/12/2025 21:59

I've no hesitation at all in saying that not only does she pay for the damage, but she organises the work, too. Not a single element of this is your responsibility.

truffleruffle · 13/12/2025 22:00

Shocking disrespectful behaviour. I hope she made an effort to clean up or did she just leave it all till you came home.
I would make her pay and ban any friends. Does she have an issue with how she handles alcohol?

Owly11 · 13/12/2025 22:00

She definitely has to pay for every single penny of the damage. So sorry you had to experience this.

blankcanvas3 · 13/12/2025 22:00

My 17 year old wouldn’t treat my house like this. He’s had house parties in the past and always cleaned up perfectly/left zero damage. If he was 26 and I came back to this he’d be kicked out

TheatricalLife · 13/12/2025 22:01

I'd be absolutely livid! 26 years old and allowing your parents home to be trashed is just awful. Not only would she be paying for every bit of the damage down to the last pound, she'd be cleaning the house top to bottom (or paying for a professional deep clean) and potentially looking for somewhere else to live depending on how genuinely remorseful she was. What an absolute piss take.

Ladymuckypuddle · 13/12/2025 22:01

@MyFairGreenTurtle a hotel for the night seems a good idea. Do you think she could have been spiked? Sounds like it was a pretty dangerous.

Nevereatcardboard · 13/12/2025 22:01

Does she have a car or anything else of value? I’d insist she sells it to cover the damage and I’d return any expensive Christmas presents to get a refund. Above all, I’d be insisting she moves out in the New Year.

Ruggerchick · 13/12/2025 22:01

That is really out of order and disrespectful. She needs to pay for all damages and all cleaning costs. My 18/19 year old sons had parties when we were away. The most we would find would be the odd empty orange juice cartoon behind the sofa and the recycling bin full to overflowing!
