Shocked by my colleague’s reply to me

I’m a teacher and went out for a couple of drinks last night as a department Christmas get together. I was a bit late so they’d already been drinking. I drove there and someone was driving like an idiot really close behind me which I mentioned when I arrived. Another teacher said that’s probably not the first man who has tried to get close to my rear end. Lots of laughter. AIBU to find that quite shocking given the audience?

The teachers I know have very black humour, a bit like fire/police, as the way to get through their stressful lives.

If it was a man, I’d be thinking he’s had a good long look at my arse in the past so eeeewwww and I’d chalk him down as a bit of a creep and to be careful in any future dealing with him, but not do anything about that one comment right now.

Just wondering, (nothing to do with the pub perv) and I hope it’s ok I ask you this, but do you really think being a teacher is a stressful as the emergency services ?

Dulcie6 · 13/12/2025 16:31

Just a joke

TeatimeForTheSoul · 13/12/2025 16:33

I wonder, if something happened to that colleague, eg a drunk person vomited on them, would it be seen as OK to say ‘I bet that’s not the first person to feel nauseous around you?’

Why are random sexual comments to women seen as permissible?

I wondered this too

Probably true, on the great scheme of things.

Dunno.

Mostly cheeky banter for the sake of a joke, after a few drinks, I think, oooh er missus.

However if you are much younger than the person who said it, and / or more junior in the department , and they were a man who said it lecherously while making crude grabbing gestures towards your behind then a lot less OK.

And then did a Sid James laugh

schoolfriend · 13/12/2025 16:40

Big eye roll I guess but whatever.

Aah the old once a year drinkers. Embarrassing for them. Take no notice

Exactly this

youalright · 13/12/2025 16:42

She did not say it was

Sometimeswinning · 13/12/2025 16:47

@3luckystars It’s a simple comparison. No one said it was the same, it was just pointing out there is dark humour in some professions to help lighten pretty serious moments. Talking about easily rattled!! How ironic.

Plus it’s not dark humour. It’s disgusting.
Id have probably told him to shut his cunty mouth! Then guess who’d be in the wrong for not loving his humour?? Typical scenario.

ILoveLaLaLand · 13/12/2025 16:47

How old are you that a bit of banter offended you so much you had to come onto MN about it?

susiedaisy1912 · 13/12/2025 16:51

Oh ffs op stop looking to be offended. I would have laughed at that as well

localnotail · 13/12/2025 16:52

Just a stupid drunken joke. No need to get offensive.

Report them to the TRA. Not really, it was a silly joke, seriously move on.

Don't tell me he got her pronouns wrong as well.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 13/12/2025 16:53

What do you mean 'given the audience'? Are teachers too proper for that sort of thing? Should they maintain pure minds, as if they were eternally in the classroom with children?

Owly11 · 13/12/2025 16:54

Who said it? And how did they say it? If it was a man and the group was predominantly male i might have felt a bit vulnerable, but if it was a mixed group of teachers on the same level as you and was saidnin a light hearted way i would have just rolled my eyes and got a round in.

I work for fire and I wouldn't touch being a teacher with a ten foot barge pole any day of the week. They have my utmost respect and admiration for what they do on a daily basis.

MyLittleNest · 13/12/2025 16:55

If you were out for drinks then you sort of need to take the whole "colleague" thing out of it. If you want to maintain that professional barrier, don't socialize with coworkers.

Zzzz … guess I’m not the only person to fall asleep at the tedium of your comments

Poetnojo · 13/12/2025 16:56

"AIBU to find that quite shocking given the audience?"
Who was the audience? A group of adults in a bar? Not very shocking no, had it been in the classroom in front of students then it would be shocking.

Arlanymor · 13/12/2025 16:57

"Oh Timothy - that's gross. If you're not careful Santa will put you on his naughty list and you'll not be getting anything for Christmas" and then I would move on with my evening.

Meh

They'd just had a few

Boys will be boys, eh? Why do so many women make excuses for them?

Crass jokes are not the preserve of men

One might roll one's eyes, or indeed tell whoever it is to fuck off, but being shocked is ludicrous.

Where does it say the teacher was male?

FollowSpot · 13/12/2025 17:04

In my book group, all female, someone may well have made that comment.

Followed by some other terrible puns / double entendres, and a chorus of “Pull up to the Bumper” by Grace Jones.
