Shocked by my colleague’s reply to me

I’m a teacher and went out for a couple of drinks last night as a department Christmas get together. I was a bit late so they’d already been drinking. I drove there and someone was driving like an idiot really close behind me which I mentioned when I arrived. Another teacher said that’s probably not the first man who has tried to get close to my rear end. Lots of laughter. AIBU to find that quite shocking given the audience?

OP posts:

Oh do you know what, normally I'd say that sort of thing is out of order etc but given the time and place etc I really don't think it's that bad.

And also the sort of thing that could/would be said to either a woman or a man.

But you're obviously entitled to dislike it.

Crass jokes are not the preserve of men

This.
Plus I note the OP has been quite cagey about their sex and that of the other teacher.
Straight female to straight female would be a very different situation from, say, gay male to straight male.
Admittedly, it's most likely the one making the comment is male and the OP is female, but we don't know (yet).

GreenCandleWax · 13/12/2025 16:58

Boys will be boys, eh? Why do so many women make excuses for them?

Where does it say it was a male who made that comment?

Eyeshadow · 13/12/2025 17:08

I do think this is typical of middle aged women (no offence to anyone).

Many of them that I work with have this sense of humour and everything is an innuendo, which I personally do not find funny.

But in this instance I would have just laughed it off as everyone was out of work and had a few drinks and it wasn’t malicious.

Even if it was a male colleague who said it, I still wouldn’t have taken offence.

BauhausOfEliott · 13/12/2025 17:08

Oh come on, it’s a really mild joke among a group of adult colleagues in the pub, outside of work. You weren’t in a staffroom meeting or standing up in front of your class. I can’t imagine being offended by it, personally.

Who said it was a man? Women use double entendres as well, you know.

It’s such a mild joke for a group of adults at a Christmas party.

Are you actually a teacher?
Because I would be very surprised at anyone being offended by this, let alone a teacher who probably has had far worse said to them.

I am sorry, I couldn't be less offended if I tried

Soashamed60 · 13/12/2025 17:15

FollowSpot · 13/12/2025 16:10

Probably true, on the great scheme of things.

Dunno.

Mostly cheeky banter for the sake of a joke, after a few drinks, I think, oooh er missus.

However if you are much younger than the person who said it, and / or more junior in the department , and they were a man who said it lecherously while making crude grabbing gestures towards your behind then a lot less OK.

This. You're being a bit pearl clutchy 🤣

MissMoneyFairy · 13/12/2025 17:15

What audience? Were there children present

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · 13/12/2025 17:16

Unless the audience was your pupils, no it is not "shocking" it is a silly innuendo between adults at a private social gathering, you know "a joke", which hasn't been banned yet (although the way the world is going perhaps it will! 🙄)

Viviennemary · 13/12/2025 17:19

It was a bit silly. But you must have led a very sheltered life to have been very offended by that

itsgettingweird · 13/12/2025 17:21

I’d have laughed and made some comment about my fat soft arse and bouncier than my car boot 🤷‍♀️

IwishIcouldconfess · 13/12/2025 17:21

MissMoneyFairy · 13/12/2025 17:15

Considering they went out for drinks, I doubt children were present

CountFucula · 13/12/2025 17:21

I have seen this before, I believe this is a conversation style commonly referred to as ‘joking’. No need to be frightened OP.

Hankunamatata · 13/12/2025 17:24

Total none issue

They had all been drinking.

Ruggerchick · 13/12/2025 17:24

3luckystars · 13/12/2025 16:31

Just wondering, (nothing to do with the pub perv) and I hope it’s ok I ask you this, but do you really think being a teacher is a stressful as the emergency services ?

I really hope not. Teaching may stressful at times buts it’s nothing compared to what the emergency services experience.

KrimboBell · 13/12/2025 17:24

It’s a bit immature but hardly worth getting upset about.

Dominoeffecter · 13/12/2025 17:28

Not funny, not offensive just meh

Dollymylove · 13/12/2025 17:31

Are people really so sensitive these days?
Im guessing those who are offended weren't around in the 70s when a few ribald comments on a boozy night out produced gales of laughter and were forgotten 10 minutes later. Im glad im old tbh.

Coffeeblanketandabookplz · 13/12/2025 17:34

Reminds me of The Office woke up at the crack of dawn comment

Miffylou · 13/12/2025 17:34

…quite shocking given the audience

What, you think teachers are either too high-minded or too delicate to hear crude jokes, let alone make them? Bless!

It wasn’t pleasant and I wouldn’t have liked it; I would probably have made a face and said "ho ho ho" in an expressionless voice, to make it clear i didn’t enjoy the "joke". But it’s not "shocking".

Blueskiesandrainbows · 13/12/2025 17:34

EchoedSilence · 13/12/2025 16:08

It was a joke. No need to get offended by every bloody thing.

definitely this.

NemoSaltatSobrius · 13/12/2025 17:35

Jeez being so precious must be bloody exhausting!

You’re right, back then we were just supposed to take the sexual comments, and touching. If we complained we were ‘bad sports’.
But in an era when women weren’t even allowed to independently hold a mortgage and abuse in general was hushed up, what would you expect. The people who were traumatised by it were just labelled as neurotic.
Oh the good old days.

SlashBeef · 13/12/2025 17:52

What do you mean 'the audience'? I assume the students weren't there with you slamming shots Confused
It was crass but not noteworthy.
