To be worried there will be a war in Europe

I don't think there will be. But the media seem to be hell bent on
winding us up about it. I dont understand Trump's attitude at all. He's like not our problem. I thought the USA was meant to be in NATO.

Let’s not forget here that Donald changes with the wind. Just look at how he has behaved towards Ukraine, Putin is right, Putin is wrong, now he’s right again and will win the war!

He really should get his own house in order before meddling in other countries

Yes.

Trump behaves like an idiot, he flip flops and causes more uncertainty. He currently sides with Russia just taking Ukrainian land and the Ukrainian people should just roll over and accept it.

Teddleshon1 · 12/12/2025 09:50

@StandFirm why is a more coordinated European defence policy the responsibility of the US?

It's not, but the US have always been involved, which in many ways has prevented Europe from putting together a more coordinated defence policy, because the deal was that the US would guarantee Europe's security.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/12/2025 10:24

This thread😲

I grew up in the Cold War. There will be a cyber war or a Cold War if that.

I don’t think anyone will be sent on active service. I don’t know anyone in real life who thinks like this. It’s the changing relationship with US that makes people feel threatened.

bumblingbovine49 · 12/12/2025 10:28

I wish I could find the post from a few years ago when I said one of the major effects of the UK leaving the EU was that it signalled to Russia that Europe was starting to really disagree and that the infighting resulting from Brexit was a gift to Putin.

I was seriously worried it would embolden Putin to start a war with one of the old 'Eastern bloc' countries. Something he has been itching to do for years. Although the EU was of course an economic union, it was nonetheless a union and made Europe stronger and a more formidable enemy for Russia.

I hadn't even thought about the effect of a US president like Trump who would want to cosy up to the Russian bully and how it would weaken NATO so much. I am really worried the war will spread too.

I worry that Russia will move on to one of the smaller Baltic States as a test to see if NATO will respond with force without the US fully on board. It this happens and NATO does not respond with decisive and aggressve force we are truly stuffed . Even if NATO were to respond decisively the, resulting fight would be awful too. Let's hope I am wrong in this , DH thinks I am

Dappy777 · 12/12/2025 10:30

Russia doesn't have the manpower or the resources. They can't even subdue Ukraine.

If there is a war, I won't be involved. My great grandfather was wounded in WW1 and my grandfather was in the RAF in WW2, but if there was a war tomorrow, I wouldn't lift a finger. I don't feel English/British anymore. That sense of living in a nation with a shared history and shared identity just isn't there. The left have demonised all our national heroes and taught us to hate and reject our own culture and history.

When Labour got in in 1997, a speechwriter for Blair said "the plan was to rub the right's nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date." Fine. But you can't have it both ways. You can't destroy somebody's identity, sneer at their history, impose a new identity on them and then expect them to risk their life for you. The left have got what they wanted. They've created a new Britain, and they can go and fight for it.

Please stop with the scaremongering posts. Some people come to AIBU to get away from all that. Thanks

I've been listening to a lot of podcasts and news recently and this is my prediction Call me nuts if you want.

Trump needs minerals.
He needs them for AI energy and winning the race of AI domination with China. This is accelerating rapidly and he knows this.

He can't get them from China so he is willing to get into bed with Russia to get them and win the race. He knows Russia are weak in this area and won't win the Ai race

Once US has screwed everyone in Europe over US will then screw Russia over too.

I do believe there will be a war but centred round Israel rather than Russia v Europe We may get dragged in. But they are fighting for religion and ideology not land so won't give in.

When the war in Europe comes it will be around ai and is more likely to be a civil war with the US and China dominating and the rest of us scrabbling around for crumbs.

If we want to be in with a chance our best chance at any survival in the economy is to get into bed with trump to and be he lapdog as painful as that would be.

Blimey this is depressing and a very believable scenario

Meadowfinch · 12/12/2025 10:36

Trump is a grubby little profiteer and a morality free zone. He will only do what enriches American. To him NATO is irrelevant.
I think as long as Germany/France/UK and the rest of Europe stick with Ukraine, Russia will keep pushing & testing, but not invade anywhere else. Putin doesn't have the resources to fight on two fronts.

Just read this yes I think you’re listening to stuff that had insight. It’s China v US and that’s what’s going on, AI and minerals. I agree with your last line too.

So what do you think Ukraine can do
Russia is making ground every day
Ukraine gives in or gets totally overtaken by Russia
The only way that will not happen is if Europe gets involved
Do you want your kids going to fight for Ukraine then is that ok with you

As has been mentioned more than once, Putin's motivations are not solely driven by Ukraine.

Yes.

We don't need to look to the US for leaders that 'flip flip and cause more uncertainty" !! .. our current 'government' are more than capable of doing that on their own. I would be more worried about our domestic leadership in the event of war. Its bad enough having a eminently unqualified Chancellor. The Defence Sec seems to have a background in disability rights and trade unions?, If the Government were a school (and it feels like one some times) Ofsted would say 'lacks subject knowledge' but it seems OK for the upper echelons of public office. Maybe Raynor will be in charge by then to give some Churchillesque addresses to the Country and steel our resolve.

IWat · 12/12/2025 13:36

No. I'm not worried about trump. He doesn't benefit from war. His administration has been working to achieve peace.

IBelieveInUnicorns34 · 12/12/2025 13:38

"I worry that Russia will move on to one of the smaller Baltic States as a test to see if NATO will respond with force without the US fully on board. It this happens and NATO does not respond with decisive and aggressve force we are truly stuffed"

Former Eastern Block countries have been saying this for a while.

Cleikumstovies · 12/12/2025 13:40

It's reasonable to worry about a possible conflict in Europe, but would you prefer European counties to submit to a foreign power to impose it's will on them? Or to insist on them being neutered? Given that most of Europe has experienced just that in the last 80 years submission should not be an option.

And Truss was a pm. Who was less qualified than her?

Sideorderofchips · 12/12/2025 16:55

Its not unreasonable to be concerned about this. Russia seems to save special hatred for the UK even though their oligarchs love it here

Did you complain about the Defence Secretaries under the Tories who had no military experience? Shapps, Fallon, Hammond...

It is Rayner btw.

JohnTheRevelator · 12/12/2025 17:21

Omg this is at the back of mine constantly lately. Probably because of all the hype whipped up by the media. I just try not to dwell on it.

Alexandra2001 · 12/12/2025 17:23

Get into bed with Trump??

Anyone who thinks that is an utter idiot, Trump is the most unreliable person going, Marjory Taylor Greene??

I also wonder why those calling for extra defence spend now, weren't calling for it 3 or 4 years ago?
Happy to support the Tories who slashed it & sold off vast portions of MOD estate for housing

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 12/12/2025 17:47

I think it could be something to do with how much change there's been over the last decade or so. Like if you think about it, kids in the 80s/90s had no mobile phones/internet or devices. These days people from all over the world are talking more, mixing more and traveling more. Then individualism comes along. Respecting everyones differences etc. Id imagine that its harder to lead a country these days. Some of the ould fellas up top are probably slower to adapt

hattie43 · 12/12/2025 05:24

Logically how can Russia take on Europe when it can’t defeat one country, Ukraine. They have been at war 4 yrs so manpower and funds are depleted . Putin is all chest beating and rhetoric.

Russia isn’t going to take on Europe. Not in an actual land war, anyway.

Regarding Ukraine, this is what Russia does. It’s what the Soviet Union did. Keep throwing troops into the meat grinder, in tandem with developing and exploiting their other advantages, until Ukraine is exhausted.

www.csis.org/analysis/seven-contemporary-insights-state-ukraine-war

I personally doubt that Russia wants full takeover, either of Ukraine or the rest of the former Soviet Republics. A massive empire is incredibly and detrimentally expensive to maintain, as the USSR found out (one of the reasons why Beria wanted to shed some of the constituent republics in the 1950s, and would have done so had Khrushchev not been the victor in that power struggle). It wouldn’t be to their benefit. Sowing misinformation, fear, and confusion as to what exactly the game plan is, is also the Russian standard. Tbh I think Russia essentially has what it wanted, hence the push to get it signed, sealed and delivered.

Oh, and Trump doesn’t flip flop as much as it may appear he does. He’s another one that deliberately sows confusion.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 12/12/2025 18:33

I think we’re closer to war than we’ve ever been in my 58 years on this planet 🙁

Snakebite61 · 12/12/2025 19:06

GreenSoapandSeeds · 11/12/2025 20:37

The general secretary of NATO has said we should prepare for war with Russia. How is that the media’s fault?

You are being naive.
