To be worried there will be a war in Europe

I don't think there will be. But the media seem to be hell bent on
winding us up about it. I dont understand Trump's attitude at all. He's like not our problem. I thought the USA was meant to be in NATO.

That is not what is being suggested, unless you listen to Russian propaganda.

Not Russian propaganda, NATO was suggesting preventative strikes on Russia two weeks ago.

From the Independent:

"Nato is considering “pre-emptive” action against Russia following a string of hybrid attacks on Europe, a senior official in the alliance has warned.

Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, an Italian who serves as chair of the Nato Military Committee, said the alliance may need to adopt a more “aggressive” approach to deter Moscow from continuing its campaign of drone incursions and cyber attacks in Europe. "

According to commentators on the BBC we are already at war with Russia. They are sabotaging communication cables, firing at our planes and sending drones into Poland.

DoingAway · 12/12/2025 07:52

We have had the US defence policy document out this week which makes clear US is not currently our friend or even a friend of democracy. Russia loves it. So then NATO from a European perspective is obviously going to ramp up the hyperbole to get public opinion behind increased spending on defence. Not saying the prediction isn’t valid but just that the political agenda is there.

Yes they need money, fine. Headlines get people concerned. It’s political justification for increasing spend.

Bananaandmangosmoothie · 12/12/2025 07:55

Why don’t you think there will be? Historically peace in Europe is an anomaly.

singmoon · 12/12/2025 07:56

I worry about it quite a lot, but done know what to do about it. I'm 61, don't recall things ever being this bad in my lifetime

The EU and UK can't build tech like the US does due to over regulation, the same goes for pretty much everything else. Massive over regulation and government micromanagement everywhere.

If you look at the latest tech based legislation in both the UK and EU it is to restrict technology companies from doing things (DSA/Online Safety Act, the EU AI Act etc).

In the UK it took 15 years of paperwork costing £1.2 billion for the Lower Thames Crossing tunnel to get permission to start work!

Regulation is a tricky question: it's both a factor in impeding tech innovation but it's also a strategic threat to AI corporations and pretty much the only way Europe's able to prevent them having unfettered access to our data.

In this context I find the word 'pre-emptive' a bit clumsy. It's not exactly pre-emptive if it 'follows' hybrid attacks.

I agree we are at war- cyber attacks are definitely the way they seem to be going. Do you think Russia will actually attack an other nations- physically?

IBelieveInUnicorns34 · 12/12/2025 08:10

A lot of people mistake physical distance for safety. Cybersecurity, misinformation, feeding in local conflicts. This is what we should be talking about.

Yes, all with AI at its heart.

If the EU/European part of NATO attack Russia (or Belarus), and that is what is being suggested by Rutte and the "Coalition of the Willing" then things will go nuclear very fast.

We need to tell the idiots in power in the UK/EU that we will not tolerate them playing with our lives.

That’s not what’s being said at all. But I suspect you already know that.

StandFirm · 12/12/2025 08:19

This is not a coincidence: https://www.npr.org/2025/12/11/nx-s1-5638562/trump-ai-david-sacks-executive-order

If you look at the wider media strategy, the Paramount bid for WarnerBros is favoured by Trump. Why? Larry Ellison is the co-founder of tech corporation Oracle, which has heavily invested in AI. Interestingly, owning both Paramount and WBD would allow the same tech mogul (and Trump backer) to control CBS and CNN. With Fox taking over TikTok in the US, and X already taken over by Musk, news sources for a vast majority of Americans will start to sound remarkably similar. Add AI into this and I'm not sure how anyone will escape the echo chamber. The irony when you think of how long those same people have accused the 'legacy media' of mind control...

StandFirm · 12/12/2025 08:25

The final kicker is that anyone working as fact checkers will be denied a visa to the US. Interesting. I agree with PP that a war is already being waged on Europeans right now with rampant disinformation. It's coming for both East and West at once and aims at confusing the minds of Europeans trying to see through the bullshit. Sounds very similar to the psy op tools used in the Soviet bloc for decades, but with modern tech.

@StandFirmChina will be progressing at pace whether US do or not. I can’t see the EU countering so it really is the US who can keep up. What are your thoughts on how to deal with China?

The general secretary of NATO has said we should prepare for war with Russia. How is that the media’s fault?

Head of huge defence group talks about a war. No shit Sherlock.

Hes got to justify his job somehow.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 12/12/2025 08:31

I've been listening to a lot of podcasts and news recently and this is my prediction Call me nuts if you want.

Trump needs minerals.
He needs them for AI energy and winning the race of AI domination with China. This is accelerating rapidly and he knows this.

He can't get them from China so he is willing to get into bed with Russia to get them and win the race. He knows Russia are weak in this area and won't win the Ai race

Once US has screwed everyone in Europe over US will then screw Russia over too.

I do believe there will be a war but centred round Israel rather than Russia v Europe We may get dragged in. But they are fighting for religion and ideology not land so won't give in.

When the war in Europe comes it will be around ai and is more likely to be a civil war with the US and China dominating and the rest of us scrabbling around for crumbs.

If we want to be in with a chance our best chance at any survival in the economy is to get into bed with trump to and be he lapdog as painful as that would be.

Wish I hadn’t opened this thread 😔

Same. I’m usually very good at avoiding news about this.
However, whoever said we are already at war - maybe in the BBC article? - was right. Wars are fought very differently these days. There’s a whole world of stuff going on that we only hear tiny snippets about.

Thats not to say it couldn’t hugely escalate of course.

StandFirm · 12/12/2025 08:34

China will definitely try and win that particular race (who knows, they might even be ahead right now) and China only cares about China. I would have wanted Europe and the US to stand strong together but that's not the reality we're facing. I also don't think it'll make the US stronger but I suspect US tech corps are gunning for the EU because of the attempts to regulate.

StandFirm · 12/12/2025 08:42

As Europeans, I think we're in a real bind here... we should have seen that the future would belong to tech super powers and not let down our guard on defence either. We've outsourced BOTH. What did we expect...

BeardofHagrid · 12/12/2025 08:42

It’s so worth it though, just to save Ukraine.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 12/12/2025 08:42

Exactly @StandFirm

Teddleshon1 · 12/12/2025 08:43

Europe needs to get its act together and take full responsibility for its own defence.
