To not be sure if I like our new carpet..

We have had our carpet since we moved in 8 years ago. It’s grey and the walls were also grey so we just went along with it as it was the trend anyway.
I decided to paint the grey a taupe colour and we went for a chocolate carpet. It’s cost us a lot of money and we’ve had to wait a long time as with it being open plan we had to get the carpet in the stairs and landing too. We went for a chocolate colour because I thought it would go with the walls and also I thought it would show less stains between a toddler, a dog and me who’s a bit of a liability with a cuppa! It’s fitted and I could cry. I’m not sure if it is too dark or not. Plus they had to remove a door - one being the one that leads to our freezing cold porch as it now needs planing so I’m sat typing this with a very cold breeze on me! Does it look too dark and awful? Before and after.

Sorry OP but calling it 'chocolate' does not hide the fact that you have a brown carpet. Brown - whatever were you thinking!?

How rude

PInkyStarfish · 10/12/2025 19:57

I actually like it and I don’t like anything!

I would worry that it would show every bit of white hair or fluff though.

DaisyChain505 · 10/12/2025 19:57

Carpet is fine but the rug is too light to go with it, get a darker tone.

MyNeedyLilacBird · 10/12/2025 19:58

Sorry I really don't like it. Maybe you could try a different wall colour. I wouldn't ever choose a brown carpet tbf. I'm also not convinced the sofa goes either

OttersMayHaveShifted · 10/12/2025 20:00

The carpet is fine, but it really doesn't go with the sofa.

cocobanana92 · 10/12/2025 20:00

Honestly no I don't like it. The sofa doesn't match at all. Are you planning on a new one?

sciaticafanatica · 10/12/2025 20:03

Is the carpet the start of a complete room and furniture makeover?
if not it doesn’t actually go with anything.
on the plus side you will never see the dirt on that brown carpet

WonderingWanda · 10/12/2025 20:05

I think a slightly less contrasting rug would be better. I also wonder if the beige then the orangy pine and then the brown is not quite right. Could you paint the wood work another colour, maybe cream.

Or cheaper to use throws or recover

SisterTeatime · 10/12/2025 20:11

I love a dark floor. Yours is a bold choice but heaps better than boring old greigy taupe. You need to lean into it.

Kill the rug with fire!!! (Won’t be hard) if you want a rug get something a lot bigger, flatter and more woven, in warm colours, or a big sea grass one (which I think could be great).

The sofa isn’t great with the carpet but with some better, bigger cushions made of natural materials and perhaps a throw or two it will be fine.

personally I’d paint the wood but not white. I’d be looking at whites like Old White, Joa’s White (F&B) but it depends how much painting you want to do. You defo need more colour in the room not less. Some natural fibres.

you can get super wicker and woven baskets for practically nothing in Primark or Tesco which you could use as storage. Also plants will look good.

you need a big picture or two. If you don’t know what you like, get a big poster or some of your kids’ art framed.

NDfan · 10/12/2025 20:43

Much prefer the new carpet - looks stylish & cozy.

PrincessofWells · 10/12/2025 20:48

It will look much better with white skirting and white walls. The walls look grungy. Brown is a very 70s colour, I'd introduce some mid century furniture.

lohpetite · 10/12/2025 20:53

Sorry OP I don’t like it at all. The skirting, the wall colour, the sofa - nothing is working. Looks like an unloved rental with a dark carpet to disguise spills. Sorry!

Tryingatleast · 10/12/2025 20:55

I’m the same I like it just perhaps not the rug

Hoppinggreen · 10/12/2025 20:57

I don't love the brown but its no worse than grey and to be honest I am not a fan of carpet anyway

MiddleChildX · 10/12/2025 21:14

Lorrymum · 10/12/2025 17:56

I like it. It looks a lot better than grey.

I think I quoted the wrong person.

Incredibly rude. Why do some folk think speaking like this is okay?

I think it is lovely. It looks very cosy and classic. And very on trend. I just got new carpets and the salesman said brown tones are all the rage.

Wayk · 10/12/2025 21:20

My friend is an interior designer and said it is stunning and on trend. Grey has gone out of fashion. She did suggest incorporating a bit of colour in your cushions.

Jesus wept. You could simply say it’s not to your taste. That’s someone’s home you’re talking about. How utterly horrid.

Boudy · 10/12/2025 21:25

I don't like it. But see why you chose it( I have 2 dogs and 4 adults in house) I think if you had colourful rug it would be v nice. Hard to tell overall with small photo.

Boudy · 10/12/2025 21:29

Oh and by the way we had oatmeal carpet in our sitting room which lasted 3 years then we changed to vinyl which sounds horrid I know but is black and white shapes and huge colourful rug.So can completely understand going darker!

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 10/12/2025 21:32

Lose the rug but carpet looking fab! Great choice, cosy and practical 🥰

CraftyPlayer · 10/12/2025 21:34

I like it. Just change the rug.

booboohoohoo · 10/12/2025 21:38

I’m so sorry but I really don’t like it at all. I think it looks dark and dated. But maybe it looks better in real life. I love my living room but if I take a photo of it I don’t think it looks as good.
