To not be sure if I like our new carpet..

We have had our carpet since we moved in 8 years ago. It’s grey and the walls were also grey so we just went along with it as it was the trend anyway.
I decided to paint the grey a taupe colour and we went for a chocolate carpet. It’s cost us a lot of money and we’ve had to wait a long time as with it being open plan we had to get the carpet in the stairs and landing too. We went for a chocolate colour because I thought it would go with the walls and also I thought it would show less stains between a toddler, a dog and me who’s a bit of a liability with a cuppa! It’s fitted and I could cry. I’m not sure if it is too dark or not. Plus they had to remove a door - one being the one that leads to our freezing cold porch as it now needs planing so I’m sat typing this with a very cold breeze on me! Does it look too dark and awful? Before and after.

@Whatsherusername that's why @MumInTheShire is cold, the door has been removed to have it planed, then will be re-hung 🙂

THisbackwithavengeance · 10/12/2025 18:12

I love it

The door will be easy to sort so once its back on it will be nice and cosy.

But im sorry I don't like the carpet at all, brown carpet looks old dated and grubby, like a cheap hotel trying to hide stains. Can you get a big rug?

Or paint the skirting? I think the orange wood and brown clash.

Im trying to think if ive ever seen a brown carpet in an interior magazine etc so you could get some Inspo?

Wayk · 10/12/2025 18:16

I really like it

Wayk · 10/12/2025 18:16

I really like it

Sometimessmiling · 10/12/2025 18:16

Love it, ditch the rug get something with a pop of colour. The grey trend was ridiculous

Holdonforsummer · 10/12/2025 18:18

It’s very 80s, sorry

largeprintagathachristie · 10/12/2025 18:19

Love the new carpet- not a fan of the rug.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 10/12/2025 18:22

It looks cosy, autumnal and has the same richness as a conker. Really lovely.

itsthetea · 10/12/2025 18:31

The carpet is warm
the rug is too contrasting

MumInTheShire · 10/12/2025 19:24

No the rug isn’t great is it! I’ll look for another one. This is the living room from a better angle

Some nice pinks will work well in there now. And lots of green plants

MissyB1 · 10/12/2025 19:36

A pink and brown rug would brighten it all up a bit. Needs to be larger than the last one.

SunnySideDeepDown · 10/12/2025 19:41

I’m not going to sugar coat it, a dark brown carpet is never a good idea style wise. It’s very dated, will darken a room and generally makes everything look drab - sorry!

I really don’t like it and it will never win design awards, there’s a reason why you never see it on Pinterest! But it was never a design choice OP, you chose it for practical reasons so you’ll need to embrace those reasons.

xxxwd · 10/12/2025 19:43

I hate it! But I’m sure if you change the wall colour and accessories it could look nice.

sesquipedalian · 10/12/2025 19:45

OP, I think it’s very smart, and also fine if you spill tea, but it will show anything white or pale. We have a sofa with feather cushions, and I’m forever picking up white bits off the floor. It always takes a bit if getting used to when you have something new - we have a new dark wood floor and I wasn’t sure to start with, but now I love it!

Ifeelfat · 10/12/2025 19:46

I think potentially it could be very smart. I’d get rid of the pine though, and google rooms with very dark carpets for inspiration.

TheTaupeScroller · 10/12/2025 19:46

I don't like it with the wood as it is, but I would paint the chimney and skirting boards in white to make it look more modern and fresh.

So no, I don't hate it at all, I just would change a few things around it. I like white and brown

TittyGajillions · 10/12/2025 19:47

It's not great and doesn't really go with the woodwork or sofa. The little shelf thing is way too small for that wall as well.

Darknightsandsparklylights · 10/12/2025 19:54

agree you need to paint the woodwork white , including the fireplace. the rug someone suggested looks good. But find a rug in colours you love and use these colours elsewhere to warm it up and pull it together. When you can, get a beige sofa (or throw over current grey one)?Framed big picture including the colours in your new rug, little brown and some white, and some cushions in same warm colours, maybe a couple in a lighter , warmer brown to pull it together. You’ll get used to the carpet and with some tweaks it could look warm and stylish

Jane143 · 10/12/2025 19:55

Grey is out of fashion now and becoming dated. The new one looks nice. Just treat yourself to a few accessories to tie to look in. Eg brown candle or rug or anything really

AlwaysAFaithful · 10/12/2025 19:57

lots of big, leafy house plants will look fabulous with the dark brown ❤️❤️
