To not be sure if I like our new carpet..

We have had our carpet since we moved in 8 years ago. It’s grey and the walls were also grey so we just went along with it as it was the trend anyway.
I decided to paint the grey a taupe colour and we went for a chocolate carpet. It’s cost us a lot of money and we’ve had to wait a long time as with it being open plan we had to get the carpet in the stairs and landing too. We went for a chocolate colour because I thought it would go with the walls and also I thought it would show less stains between a toddler, a dog and me who’s a bit of a liability with a cuppa! It’s fitted and I could cry. I’m not sure if it is too dark or not. Plus they had to remove a door - one being the one that leads to our freezing cold porch as it now needs planing so I’m sat typing this with a very cold breeze on me! Does it look too dark and awful? Before and after.

I was set to hate it, but I like it! We went for light carpet and spent ££££ and after 2 years it is grubby in places and totally destroyed in others.

gamerchick · 10/12/2025 21:58

I think it's the rug tbh. The carpet is lovely OP.

Get a different rug I would.

pinkstripeycat · 10/12/2025 21:59

It’s really nice. Looks warm and cozy

Monvelo · 10/12/2025 22:01

I really hate grey! The chocolate is much better.

Nelly91 · 10/12/2025 22:06

Love love love it

MightyFlow · 10/12/2025 17:57

Sorry OP but calling it 'chocolate' does not hide the fact that you have a brown carpet. Brown - whatever were you thinking!?

So much this!

TeatimeForTheSoul · 10/12/2025 22:18

If your house has good light, this is inspired! Wish we could do that to hide dog paw prints.

Shedeboodinia · 10/12/2025 22:18

Looks nice and cozy. We have a dark carpet in the living room and its so good not to worry about stains so much.
You can always get a larger rug if you want to break it up a bit.
I think you could make the walls a warmer colour to complement it too. Its probably the contrast thats jarring you.
I just looked at some dark broen carpet and wall combo ideas and there were somr really nice ideas like dusky blue walls. The light walls is the issue I think.

Kitchenbattle · 10/12/2025 22:21

Not for me, sorry @MumInTheShire i like dark but a dark wood may have been a better options?! I don’t like carpets (as a microbiologist-the make me shudder. I only have them in my stairs as it’s the only noise reducing way to floor them 😆

reversegear · 10/12/2025 22:24

I’d paint the pine the same wall colour and loose the rug, or get a fluffy sheepskin rug. I didn’t think I’d like brown carpet but it kind of works and it’s different for sure, and practical for stains like you say.

Loloj · 10/12/2025 22:26

Chocolate as a colour is very “in” right now so you are actually very on trend! I agree with others that you need a bigger rug as it is a lot of dark - a rug with chocolate and paler tones running through it. Also some nice big green house plants. Is your sofa grey? Can’t quite tell from the pics but grey sofa doesn’t go with brown. I think the carpet looks warm and cosy though - you just need the rest of the furnishings to blend in with it.

Christmaspuddingpinky · 10/12/2025 22:33

I’m sorry but I think it’s so dark !!!! Floor boards ?

Duckswaddle · 10/12/2025 22:38

It’s very 90s.

Think you need a different wall colour to make it work. The contrast is too stark.

Applesonthetree · 10/12/2025 22:39

I think it’s fine but doesn’t work with your cool toned sofa- you need more of a beige one. And the room as a whole now needs colour- you could choose orange or a warm pinky colour. I’d get a rug and accessories with colour. I think you could make it really cosy- brown can definitely work

JoWilkinsonsno1fan · 10/12/2025 22:41

Its not for me - its too dark. I would live with it for a bit, get a new rug then see how you feel.

wineosaurusrex · 10/12/2025 22:45

I love it! Hate grey. Now it looks cosy and lovely.

ADHDdiagnosis · 10/12/2025 22:55

I expected not to like it but actually I think you can make it work. It looks cosy with the fireplace.

I think maybe you need to now change other things to match the carpet is all! Maybe a large colourful rug too? Just so you get a whole fresh look and feel happier about your choice. There’s nothing wrong with your home as is but I’m just thinking when you have one thing you’re not sure about you need to do even more change so you have a new feel to the home. In time for Christmas too!

I really like the carpet and think it goes well with the wood. Brown and orange go together.

Purplebunnie · 10/12/2025 23:01

Whatever rug you go for it needs to be bigger than the one you have at the moment

Cantbloodyrememberthenameonthread · 10/12/2025 23:06

The Grey looked brighter and fresher. The brown looks very dated. Sorry OP

FWIW I don’t like grey or brown in general!

DuchessDandelion · 10/12/2025 23:11

The carpet is fine - looks rich and comfortable. You've too much one the same colourway though (IMO): paint the wood- limewash the fireplace or paint white or a chic colour.

Likewise the skirting - crisp white. Same advice for any other orangey or dark wood, so I'd switch the mirror frame too.

The black hearth tiles are lost against the carpet so I'd either retile or paint them.

Overthebow · 10/12/2025 23:16

Are brown carpets back in? It reminds me of houses from my childhood which were decorated in the 80s and needed updating. I’m not sure I can get onboard with them if they’re back in.

Neveranynamesleft · 10/12/2025 23:37

I like the carpet. The walls would look much nicer in a contrast colour such as sage green with the woodwork/skirting painted white. Sorry but as others have said, the grey sofa does not look good with it. Accessories make a massive difference too, add some green houseplants, big cushions, nice throws etc.

Saz12 · 10/12/2025 23:38

I actually like the velvety depth of color in the carpet.

But, as a whole it all looks a bit "safe and practical" when together, which gives it a depressing vibe. It needs some bolder things to give it character

Personally, Id go for russets and oranges and spicey colors, add velvety texture.
or you could try adding that kind of Orla Keilly mud-century type stuff?

I would put anything other than beige, grey, or greige on the wall. Anything,. Paint the woodwork to match. Be bold with the sofa - if youre keeping it, then use a washable throw that you love rather than something in a safe color.

AwfullyGood · 10/12/2025 23:39

I like the carpet but think the walls are too light to make the best of it.

A dusky pink or a sage green would really lift the room and bring it all together.
