Two brand new cars.
They don’t dress designer but the present well.
She has a few designer handbags.

They sound aspirant to me but no different from others I know like this
In my family we call them 'cul-de-sacers' the sort who if they actually lived in a cul-de-sac would have everything 'just so' and the 'most money spent' obviously on it house there
But I have to ask,
What is it that gets you about them?

So after they made a comment on your car (which i am assuming they can see) - you think they now know your mortgage situation, hoover situation, hairdryer situation, childcare situation and also your handbag situation!!???

This is a very odd/ stealth post.

Can this please be put in for the best post post of 2025!?

tsmainsqueeze · 09/12/2025 12:46

Can't say i really care much but i do see this dynamic as a bit of a stereotype in this age group and assume credit is involved.

Honestly I don’t brag, I don’t feel any of it is worth bragging about. My sister and friends will visit and have said things. My sister especially, she asks a lot of questions. I have argued with her on this. 😭 she asked me what I earn and nearly had a heart attack. I earn 62k. She said she assumed I was on half that. I try not to talk about money tbh.

That puts you in the 10% highest earning people in the country, did you not realise that?

And if your husband earns similar then amongst the 5% highest earning households. So perhaps you can tolerate the odd catty remark and enjoy your good fortune.

stealth bragging is still bragging.

Why do you care what people say/think?

Unless you’re rubbing money in someone’s face, I don’t think there’s any need for catty remarks to begin with.

There will be people here with a higher income than mine, a bigger house, a fancier car. I fail to see why I’d be bothered.

If they were using that information to brag or claim some sort of superiority, sure, that’s a dick move. But otherwise - enjoy your big house 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I’d feel sorry that they’re trapped in a new build and can’t afford Dyson hair tools? They should have stuck with just 1 child so they could pay to have a proper cleaner in a few days per week instead of a crappy robot hoover?

They're not trapped in a new build. They will have plenty of choices with a budget of 500k outside of the SE.

ChristmasinBrighton · 09/12/2025 12:51

Weird. What did the neighbour say?

LBFseBrom · 09/12/2025 12:56

My first thought is that you are very observant! I wouldn't notice half of those things nor give any of that a thought. If they were really nice people I'd appreciate that.

What is your point?

Not sure why you're so focused on possessions and name brands?

Are they happy?
Are the children thriving?
Is she fulfilled in her work?
Does he share equally the domestic load?

YaWeeFurryBastard · 09/12/2025 12:59

My first thought would be that it’s sad both have to work full time with kids.

DameWishalot · 09/12/2025 13:00

I'd hope they didn't pay over the odds for their new-build house and aren't having to deal with awful snagging issues and initial depreciation affecting mortgage calculations.

I'd expect them to be weighing up whether they can afford private school for two or whether they can afford extensive wraparound + tutors.

Working for things you have is not good fortune.
Notice I didn't say hard work because I know lots of people work hard and don't end up well off but jealousy is never a good look.

FastFood · 09/12/2025 13:01

I wouldn't think anything because it'd be very unlikely that we would even cross paths to the point that I can register the existence of a Dyson hair-dryer.

However, online, sounds like boasting and its a bit cringy.

Thoughts about what exactly?

Tuesdayschild50 · 09/12/2025 13:02

Just a normal family .. what's the point ?

Howmanycatsistoomany · 09/12/2025 13:03

gemful · 09/12/2025 12:06

I am the mother in the couple, I have just bought a new car. My neighbour has made an offhand comment this morning about it. TBH I thought…like most of you…we are an average family 😅

work full time and have no childcare because we have flexi time and can wfh alternate days. Pay for afterschool club the off time. Dc are 10 and 13 so they are old enough to get on with homework etc once home.

the reason I gave the other information about bags hairdryers etc is because the neighbours comment isn’t the first lately and I was getting pissed off. My sister, a cousin and two good friends made off hand comments about winning the lottery. No we just save hard. No debt!

Was the neighbour being snarky about your new car or was it an attempt at a lighthearted comment?
Best not to discuss salary/savings with friends and family. I'm always a bit 😳when people ask questions like that. I used to have a friend who would come straight out with "how much did your house/car cost?" When I dodged the question (because it was none of his beeswax) when we bought our current house, he actually went searching on the internet and found the listing, and then made sure I knew he'd found it. So weird and pissed me off so much he's no longer a friend.

They might not 'have' to but, 'want' to.

This.

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 09/12/2025 13:04

That they are incredibly normal and lucky not to have childcare costs?

But honestly, probably nothing as it describes at least 3 families I can think of that I know off the top of my head.

RaininSummer · 09/12/2025 13:04

I wouldn't have any thoughts. The cars might be leased.

At this precise moment @gemful I’d want to know if the Shark hairdryer is worth the money

Why would they pay 'over the odds' for their house? They will have paid exactly what the property is worth or they wouldn't have got a mortgage. Do you think similarly nasty thoughts about old houses such as 'I wonder how much damage to the environment that's causing with it's terrible EPC rating'?
