NC’d for this

A couple. 2 dc (no childcare)
A brand new, new build house. Mortgaged.
Two brand new cars.
They don’t dress designer but the present well.
She has a few designer handbags.
gadgets are always good brands, latest I phones, shark hairdryers, robot hoover.
very organised and tidy home, both work full time in good jobs.
They do family outings every few weekends but not every weekend.
Honesty, what are your first thoughts?!

Thoughts about what?

x12 · 09/12/2025 18:03

My first thought would be that it’s sad both have to work full time with kids.

I love my job and work p/t but if I worked f/t I don’t see why my dc would suffer. They don’t despite my DH working f/t.

62k is not an average salary so not an average family . Doing very well but many cannot afford this and do work just aa hard and save etc but do not have the salary

VegQueen · 09/12/2025 18:08

I wouldn’t notice half this stuff like the handbags or what gadgets they have…

but I’d say you definitely don’t live in London! I earn the same as you and DH earns significantly more but no way could we afford brand new cars (not that we want them anyway)

StruggleFlourish · 09/12/2025 18:12

My thoughts are okay?
Upper middle-class family.

Upper middle class would be anti new build I think & earn more, pay for private school etc.

disgustingtoe · 09/12/2025 18:16

Your sister and neighbour sound jealous. Seems like you have a nice life and have worked for it, so I think good on you.

This seems entirely normal unless you're going to drip feed that it's actually Fred and Rose West

😂

Lifestooshort71 · 09/12/2025 18:36

I have no thoughts except to think this is a braggy post.

KimHwn · 09/12/2025 11:48

I am middle class but I don't know many people who drive new cars and have designer handbags. I'd say they were on a very good wage, otoh I do know many people who are very comfortable with debt so it might be that.

This.

handsdownthebest · 09/12/2025 18:37

Sounds pretty normal to me. Very much like our house and you do not have to justify your status. I would ask if they have nothing better to spend their brain power on...but maybe there isn't much of that.

The neighbour said “new car!? Is one new car not enough?” I laughed (nervously) and said “ah well I can’t let him have all the fun!” She then said…it’s a bit overkill no?…or did you win the lotto?head tilt…

Very rude of your neighbour. I thought 'debt' but good for you if you can afford those things. I'm envious.

Joeninety · 09/12/2025 18:40

I'd think, living in a new build ?.....Ewwww !

That’s exactly how I feel about old, damp draughty and mouldy houses….

My thoughts would be that there seem to be rather more people keeping tabs on other people and their lifestyles and worldly goods than I realised. I may be peeking out at my surroundings with the wrong goggles on because I don't notice this sort of stuff.

I’m really not smug at all, I’m still working towards other goals and I am aware we are lucky but I just assumed we were nothing special to be honest. We have insurances and savings to cover a lot of life’s curveballs. Some of which we have already had unfortunately. I am highly aware that it may not always be this way.

Sounds like my son and his partner who are 29 and 34 respectively
Both are on excellent wages for our area and housing is affordable ( 4 bed detached at around £300k)
They manage money well, have savings and investments and like to treat themselves. They are in a similar situation to many of their friends.

We have ample savings. We save over 2k per month. Pensions are good etc.

Kindly, I'd hardly say 2k savings a month is ample. Are you able to retrain to earn more? Take in ironing? Odd jobs? Dog walking? Anything to get those savings pumped up into a more acceptable and actual ample amount.
