Burst my friend's bubble?

My friend goes on about her son likely being tall - 6 foot 3 based on the UK growth chart. Would I be unreasonable in telling her that because she isn't very tall, this is unlikely to be the case and that the growth chart predictions are rubbish?

She is sold on the idea of her son being tall and her son has come to believe that too but I think that now he is approaching puberty, he may become very disappointed.

Should I just leave it be or should I give her a dose of reality?

Why do you even care?

NeedATreat · 07/12/2025 16:47

Are you so bored, or just mean spirited, that you’re mulling over giving someone a ‘dose of reality’ just so that… what? You can be right? You can put her in her place? Why does it matter and why do you care?

Usernamenotav · 07/12/2025 17:10

The growth charts in the red book are actually considered pretty reliable (well with 3 inches either way), and they take mothers and fathers height into account. So if it says he will be tall that is based on his mums height already. I'd keep your nose out

His dad is about 5 foot 10.

Telling her would save her and her son from disappointment by helping them to temper their expectations.

Telling her that her son won't be tall?

How the hell do you know 😂😂

I'm just concerned at @Flyingmonica being so unhealthily obsessed with a teenage boy.

Really?

Although I think it's shitty of op wanting to give a dose of reality. I also think it's shitty that u want op to sound like she's a predator.

Tiggerhw72 · 07/12/2025 17:26

My son is just over 6”4 his Dad is 5’11 so it happens. His consultant when a baby said he’d be 6”-6”2 using the red book chart, so they were out but by too little. He was tall from an early age though to be fair. i am 5”9 so yes I’m tall but my dad is only 5”10 and mum is 5”2 and sisters are all under 5”4 so there is no real way of knowing!
He may well be over 6” if his dad is 5”10 as the next generation are getting taller!

Really? Cool.

It doesn't really bother me when people have different opinions. If I was the mother of the teenager I'd find this pretty creepy, and if that makes me shitty in the eyes of a stranger on the internet, so be it 😂

Summerunlover · 07/12/2025 17:52

My daughter is already taller than me and she is 11. My 2 year old is really tall for her height

Easterchicken · 07/12/2025 18:15

Wowie with friends like you who needs enemies?? Why he such a negative Nancy

Skyflymom · 07/12/2025 19:17

5'6" mum (me!) and 6'2" dad produced a now (at 18 years old) 6'8" son. Height prediction from when he was a toddler was always 6'7" We never really took it too seriously but it was almost spot on!

donaldtrumponlyhasonedancemove · 07/12/2025 19:27

My one-year-old son is already taller than me. It does happen.

Why is it your concern how tall her son is?
I have plenty of friends who are average height but have very tall kids.
If you bring it up you will likely upset her and sound bitter for no reason at all.
Just forget it, it’s not your family

Doesn't matter lol. It's just talk. Why you taking it so seriously?

neilyoungismyhero · 07/12/2025 21:27

I'm 5' and my husband was 5'10. My son is 6'1.

WhistleforChristmasTime · 07/12/2025 22:53

My son is 25th centile and some odd woman told me he looks too small for school. Hes 8. Come on ! How weird.

Talipesmum · 07/12/2025 23:50

The UK growth chart predictions aren’t rubbish - but they’re not exact predictors. They’re based on pretty sound statistics, but they’re not magic. Four out of five children will grow to within 6cm of the predicted height - that’s the accuracy the growth charts quote. So if they “predict” 6ft, there’s an 80% chance the child will grow to somewhere between 5ft 9.5 in, and 6ft 2.5 in.

MyMiniMetro · 08/12/2025 00:07

I’m sorry but you’re properly weird. Nobody knows how tall kids are going to be as adults. Maybe they will be disappointed, it’s possible.

But how does you saying he might not be tall as an adult, change anything? You’re kinda just stating the obvious and sounding like a dick in the process.

Leave it.

Littlejellyuk · 08/12/2025 00:14

My female colleague is 5 foot 2. 😇
Her husband is 5 foot 8.

Guess what? 🤔
My female colleagues brother is 6 foot.

Her son is six foot 7. 😎
Sometimes it's just in the extended family genes. 🙌
@Flyingmonica

I wouldn't mention it to be a kind friend.
I personally would leave it.
But you, do you 🙃

CinnamonBuns67 · 08/12/2025 00:20

Does it matter? She can think what she thinks about her sons future height. Ultimately what will be will be, she might be right or she might not and just because she is short doesn't mean her son will be (even if the Dad is also short), my husband has shorter than average parents and he's taller than both of them.

Pumpkinspicelater · 08/12/2025 00:26

Flyingmonica · 06/12/2025 14:56

What do you mean by why does it matter? Are you saying society is not rife with tall vs short, particularly in regards to men? Is it suddenly a surprise that people care about height?

Why does it matter to you?

Cakeandcardio · 08/12/2025 00:27

But how exactly do you know what height he will be? Do you know what height he was at age 2.5?

Obeseandashamed · 08/12/2025 00:29

My Mum is 5ft 2ins, my dad was 5ft 7in. My brother is 6ft 2ins. It does happen!
