To say that most people in the UK want illegal immigration to stop

1000 replies

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 06/12/2025 10:12

I recently commented on a Facebook post to say the majority of British people are against illegal immigration. I was asked by several other users what survey I based that opinion on. I responded with the question ‘do you think most people want illegal immigration to continue then? Because if not, then surely they want it to stop?’ I didn’t receive any responses to that.
Without getting into any political arguments or name calling and giving no ifs, buts or reasons for your view, please vote as follows.

YABU - I want illegal immigration to continue.
YANBU - I don’t want illegal immigration to continue.

Let's all chip in and send her/him to Paris - permanently .
She/He doesn't realise this country actually needs migrants for to do certain skills as we don't have enough people trained here.

What are the sectors we have a skills deficit in? Perhaps we can have a system that let's in the exact number we need in and no more.

Perhaps we can prioritise those from the states, Canada, Australia, new Zealand and vast parts of the EU as there's a closer link to culturally compatibility.

In the long run I'm pretty sure we can sort things out and train our own people.

I don't mind Paris but it's a bit run down in some areas. I'd rather go to Toulouse.

Lemonysnickety · 06/12/2025 13:04

Has anyone on this thread said that they are pro illegal immigration

That is a very good point.

There has been a lot of counter argument against the OPs assertion that this is in fact the majority view. The Nazi/fascist comment got its early airing too.

Maybe people are struggling to accept that reality and that is why they are so vocal about it.

People claiming asylum when they have passed through at least one other safe country to get here (in some cases having asylum claims rejected in other countries - got to question why). People overstaying visas and playing the visa system, eg coming on a student visa with no intention of studying and then disappearing underground.

The first one you said is not illegal immigration.

What is this closer cultural compatible link we have with Yanks or Ukranians over Argentinians, Indians or Bajans?

It’s a myth that you must claim asylum in the first safe country you arrive in. There is no such rule. Otherwise, conveniently, the UK would never have to take a single refugee.

We do all this already

people from the EU, Australia, Canada etc don’t WANT to come here. Haven’t you noticed that? They go to countries that offer more opportunity.
Who wants to come here and be a nurse when you could earn x6 more and have an amazing life doing it elsewhere?

the university sector is on its knees, the trigger finally pulled by making it hard for international students to come here and other countries- like Canada EU and even America- sweeping them up.

They’ve secured the world’s greatest minds and the next generations skilled workers.

young people set the scene. Young brilliant skilled people don’t want to come here. It’s racist, complex, and quality of life is relatively poor. Why would they?

If this is about asylum-seekers, could you just run through the available legal routes to claim asylum in the UK that's they should be using?

This is the only reason why so many in the UK cite the “first safe country” expectation. They don’t want any asylum seekers full stop (unless from a European country and even then with some restrictions).

Hedgehogbrown · 06/12/2025 13:10

It's not that I want it to happen, it is just such a small percentage of overall immigration that it doesn't bother me and I don't care. People ho fixate on it when it's such a small percentage of overall migration are probably fixating because they are racist and ignorant. I am British and can't live in my own Country because the Spouse Visa rules are too strict. He has a German passport FFS. I care more about that, and my British child not seeing his British family. The only reason the Government won't soften the rules on this is because they think the public are too racist to accept any change in the law on this, because of people posting about being annoyed about immigration.

Underthinker · 06/12/2025 13:22

I don't have a strong opinion either way, but for the people proposing safe legal routes (which IIRC has been green party policy for many years) wouldn't you then anticipate a surge in asylum applications, and how would you handle that?

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 06/12/2025 13:35

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/12/2025 12:05

We’re 5 mins walk from two asylum hotels in our city centre, both Best Westerns, one used to be the station hotel. Walk past frequently, never experienced anything except a few nods and hellos. I smile back and get on with my day.

Guess every situation is different.

I suppose the level of sexual harassment you are likely to receive depends heavily on age and appearance. The videos online of girls being followed and harassed by migrants show it is young women and teenage girls who are suffering. Ask them if they’d feel safe rather than middle aged (like myself) and older women who are usually the ones stood counter protesting against the people who don’t want migrant hotels in their towns

Where can you live and earn x 6 more than a UK nurse. That's a salary of approx £180k? As starting salary is approx 30k in UK (once you factor in unsocial hours etc)

Makes sense people want to protect their quality of life and not have it destroyed. I don't understand why people would want it lowered.

I don't think it's as easy as that. I would like us to take our fair share of refugees and have some safe, legal routes to asylum in place again.

How are you defining illegal immigration? Anywhere from 45 - 70% of people who arrive irregularly are granted asylum.

Edited

This. I would like us to house people that desperately need housing, without them having to risk their lives on a small boat and without them having to fund criminal gangs to get here.

So yes I want illegal immigration to end, but I want us to be accepting more refugees and asylum seekers and getting them into work to support themselves much quicker than they can under the current system.

I think you’ll find that most people who you are branding racist and ignorant probably wouldn’t have a problem with your husband moving to the UK, regardless of his colour. How unfair and ridiculous is it that your husband cannot move to the UK to be with you, a British citizen, when people from much further afield and with no connection to the UK are being escorted in and put up in hotels? Madness

Pretty sure they would - at least own your views. The types posting the stuff on facebook have an issue with all immigration that isn’t white/English-speaking. Don’t try to pretend otherwise. And if they are claiming asylum they are by definition not illegal. The actual illegal immigrants disappear on arrival and you probably use their services when getting your nails done or car washed.

I know people from the EU who have moved here to work. I met a young German chap at dinner who is on a secondment to his firm's London office.

Met countless Australians who have moved from Australia to London. Many of them live in Clapham.

We learnt loads from the brexit experience. Mainly that it was a shit idea that has worsened this country for the very long term. Unless of course you're very rich.
As was repeatedly pointed out at the time, this was the exact motive behind it.
Farage knew it would lead to more immigrants, and the cost of living crisis. Which of course, has been a heady mix to create further popularism and make him a very rich and increasingly powerful man. All whilst laughing at those who vote for him.

Clearly didn’t learn enough to prevent the rise of Reform. Farage once again setting the tone and government policy on immigration.

My dd is young and beautiful. She volunteered with asylum seekers where we live during her gap year, and she now volunteers with them at university. She must have met hundreds of male migrants.

If you asked her whether she feels safe around them, she would assure you that she has never been treated with anything other than respect and courtesy, and yes, she does feel safe.

I'm not denying that there have been some incidents and assaults. Sadly, some men of all ethnicities are sexual predators. However, it simply isn't right to suggest that the majority of asylum seekers represent a risk to women and girls.

Perhaps you should consider that the people posting videos online of girls being followed and harassed by migrants might just have their own agenda that actually has fuck all to do with the safety of women and girls.
