To say that most people in the UK want illegal immigration to stop

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 06/12/2025 10:12

I recently commented on a Facebook post to say the majority of British people are against illegal immigration. I was asked by several other users what survey I based that opinion on. I responded with the question ‘do you think most people want illegal immigration to continue then? Because if not, then surely they want it to stop?’ I didn’t receive any responses to that.
Without getting into any political arguments or name calling and giving no ifs, buts or reasons for your view, please vote as follows.

YABU - I want illegal immigration to continue.
YANBU - I don’t want illegal immigration to continue.

No it wasn't.

Asylum seekers were sent there to go through the Rwandan system. Even with asylum granted they wouldn't be allowed to come to the UK.

Rwanda was not an offshore process.

You can offer asylum elsewhere under the convention.

DuncinToffee · 07/12/2025 17:20

Samrutha · 07/12/2025 17:15

We still have to unfortunately answer to the ECHR. The numbers are still way too high.

Even if we were idiots and left the ECHR, we still be bound to other conventions.

You would be giving up your rights for nothing.

OmNomShiva · 07/12/2025 17:11

Apologies, missed that one.

I think ALL benefits should be means tested.

When you no longer qualify, you don’t receive them. Regardless of whether it benefits young or old.

I also think unemployment benefits should be related to previous salary.

Switzerland has a really good system on that front, and by the way has a FAR higher share of immigrants in their economy.

Even PIP?

Rwanda was deemed illegal by UK courts

Why would it be stupid to leave the ECHR?

But then we changed it to make it legal (because parliament can and should be sovereign) and were gonna start the it up fully till Labour came in and closed it down.

Yep people are missing parts of information.

poetryandwine · 07/12/2025 17:25

Now, @OmNomShiva , still waiting for your views on those other matters. Specifically,

Benefits (which are subsidies by another name) for workers on fair wages; - would you maintain them, or not? Child benefit, free nursery hours, ISA tax breaks, etc.

Exactly which benefits you were referring to when you said that most benefits go to working people - to refresh, OBR says that only 37% on UC and 17% on PIP are in work.

Finally, now that we’ve clarified supermarket net profit margins, the allocation of farmland to crops and that the British pay relatively little for food, are you still against farm subsidies and if so, why? What would be your model for secure, affordable food in the UK?

Rwanda was an expensive gimmick.

Sunak knew.

You’ve got expensive gimmicks now with Labour.

It’s part of why they’re polling at 14% at latest poll.

poetryandwine · 07/12/2025 17:28

Apologies, @OmNomShiva ! Cross posted while cooking

But what about farm policy?

EasternStandard · 07/12/2025 17:29

Read @Samruthapost and look up legislation post court.

We INVENTED the ECHR. I’m glad it’s there for me if I need it in future.

If a rogue future UK government - particularly one closely tied to wealthy interests and malign foreign states - sought to attack my rights, I would be happy to have that protection.

No wonder then, that a particular UK political party closely tied to the interests of the wealthy and malign foreign states wants to abolish it.

I do wonder why…….!

European countries taking the most asylum applications

Your graph just shows applications. The actual numbers granted asylum in those countries is much lower than that.

Do you not think a rogue government would just pass legislation to ignore or leave the ECHR?

Remind us again, how many people were sent to Rwanda and at what cost?

The labour party scrapped it all just before it would have started.

poetryandwine · 07/12/2025 17:28

Apologies, @OmNomShiva ! Cross posted while cooking

But what about farm policy?

Apologies from me too - now also cooking (includes pork from UK farms, onions from UK farms, peppers and chillies from overseas).

I am not against farmers - just to be clear. But recent farmer protests are misaligned with society’s needs - they still retain a better inheritance tax regime than the rest of us business owners do. And what has been adjusted has only existed since 1984.

Opposition to the inheritance tax changes primarily comes from - again / sorry / not sorry - the very wealthy, who used the acquisiton of farmland and the pretence of farming as a tax dodge to escape inheritance tax. They poisoned the well.

We should be ensuring farmers are paid fairly for the output they deliver. In exchange, farmers should take better care of the countryside in terms of pollution, soil health and biodiversity.

Subsidies should not be necessary in the food supply chain, at any level.

Papyrophile · 07/12/2025 17:42

On the other hand, we could pay farmers a sensible price to produce the food we all need to eat. I do try to do this, by buying direct and by using my local butcher rather than a supermarket.

OmNomShiva · 07/12/2025 17:43

Samrutha · 07/12/2025 17:38

Do you not think a rogue government would just pass legislation to ignore or leave the ECHR?

That’s exactly my point - our future rogue government is trying to land exactly that policy now by framing it as “the migrant enforcer” - so that come next election, a gullible public is happy to accept it.

It’s the leopard, ready to eat our faces. And it’s so brazen and bloody obvious, I cannot believe how gullible such a huge number of British people are about that.

DuncinToffee · 07/12/2025 17:43

Samrutha · 07/12/2025 17:41

The labour party scrapped it all just before it would have started.

It was the right decision.

Do you think Sunak would have called an early election if he thought Rwanda would work?

So much money wasted on a vanity project

EasternStandard · 07/12/2025 17:43

DuncinToffee · 07/12/2025 17:39

Remind us again, how many people were sent to Rwanda and at what cost?

It was a good way to move people on to ROI. People left voluntarily. Even better, voluntary movement means no cost to the taxpayer.

Fine it’s what you and others wanted. But I think Labour will struggle due to Starmer’s decision and it could be part of their defeat at the next GE.

Is Labour not polling well? I am shocked you haven't mentioned this before!
