Do people not realise that for those who welcome them into the family they are part of the family. And if you have a dog and say it's just a dog, I'm not sure you should have one.

I think dog owners seriously underestimate the amount of bad feeling created by dog shit. It really is disgusting and some areas, including local beauty spots, are ruined by it. Dog owners on MN tend to scoff at this and imply that the rest of us have some sort of neurotic obsession - we don’t. It’s just gross and antisocial, and it’s very obvious that at least some of the “I always pick up” brigade are lying. As for the ones who admit they leave it hanging in a tree “to collect later” - WTF? Take it with you, you dirty sods.

Exactly this - there is so much where I live at the moment. DH stepped in some the other night - disgusting.

I think this is the crux of the issue that dog owners don’t want to entertain. The venom displayed towards dogs on this thread and others like it is a direct result of years and years of dogs, and their owners, being antisocial with their pet and people are sick of it. You can’t have a reasonable discussion about it with someone who thinks their dog has equivalent family member status so you end up getting frustrated and exclaiming they are insane and it’s just a flipping dog because there is so often an unwillingness to compromise or be reasonable on the dog owner’s part.

There is another thread running at the moment about the woman who couldn’t possibly put her dog in a kennel so now she will be missing Christmas. It IS crazy.

It really isn’t. There is no way I could sleep at night knowing my dog was miserable in a kennel which is why we use a lovely doggy daycare in a house. She would hate it, she’d by crying and yowling. Absolutely no way and I’m the hardened spare in our house. I’d say anybody who would knowingly inflict misery on an animal when they could avoid it aren’t mentally well.

Christmas is a roast blown out of proportion. Animal welfare comes first.

All I can be is honest @sprigatito and we always pick up dog poo. Earth Rated dog poop bags are on our subscribe and save. Responsible dog owners are also disgusted by left dog poo - I think it is disgusting. Fortunately, like with @CoubousAndTourmaIet, in our small town it is becoming rare and dog poo trees are thankfully a thing of the past here.

Notadame · 07/12/2025 13:01

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 07/12/2025 12:33

No I didn't.
I asked why you were being horrible and insulting to people on here last night, given that you say you have a dog yourself.

And, to go round in circles yet again, please show me where I was horrible or insulting.

Owners clean up dog mess.

Re allergies. Are we now having stricter controls on nuts, diary, plants etc etc ( add in massive list of possible allergies) into public places?

I can think of all sorts of anti social activities there should be stricter controls on- kids on scooters and iPads without headphones being two.

No they fucking DONT clean up their dog mess.

Only when people watch them do they do so - plenty of places up and down the UK where owners do not clean up.

They are just as fucking dirty as the disease-ridden vermin that they hang out with.

And yeh, we all get fucked on taxes to deal with literally picking up your dogs shit.

@OmNomShiva nails it regards to dogs.

A dog is not a human yes a dog can be part of a family but they are not and never will be a baby or in anyway the same as a human, I worry for people who cant tell the difference

And no they don't have to be taken everywhere

I know my dog isn’t human but that doesn’t mean I don’t value him more than humans. To be he is more important than all children.

Rubbish. As I said it’s nowhere where I live and work.

The vast majority do clean up.

"Vast majority" is not everyone.

Ergo, it happens - just because the shit aint on your doorstep doesnt negate what I said.

So by your own admission, not everyone cleans up their vermins filth.

Vast majority my arse.

HC1ps · 07/12/2025 13:06

It’s well reported that there has been a significant decrease in dog fouling in recent years.

Then your council aren’t providing enough bins.

Onleemoi · 07/12/2025 13:07

Shit in public places is disgusting. Caring about your animal isn’t. If people stuck to facts, didn’t exaggerate and didn’t made snide comments, the dog haters and decent dog owners would be on the same side.

We use Beco unscented extra large and I always carry extras to (tactfully) offer to people who may have forgotten theirs 😉
Some dog people near us have actually put a poo bag dispenser on the wall, near the entrance to the main dog walking area. It strikes me as a really good idea and I think there is less poo around as a result.

A) her dog gets distressed in kennels and she doesn't want to put it through that - I wouldn't either; B) she probably will spend it with her brother, so won't be 'missing Christmas'; and C) her change in plans was caused by a thoughtless BF

HelplessSoul · 07/12/2025 13:09

It’s well reported that there has been a significant decrease in dog fouling in recent years.

You might wanna do some research before spewing nonsense:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3v3ey2l75xo

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/02/08/dog-fouling-record-levels-complaints/

You cant even justify your reasoning properly. Pathetic.

"No dog fouling" sign at Croesyceiliog Athletic FC. The white sign has a picture of a dog on it, with a red circle around it and a line through the middle. The sign reads: It is an offence not to clean up after your dog. Behind the sign is a grass foot...

Dog owners not picking up poo 'may be neglecting pets'

It comes as an eight-year-old football player was "covered" in poo, prompting action from his club.

And this is why dog owners get called batshit. One dog more important than ALL humans. It really just beggars belief.

Mothership4two · 07/12/2025 13:12

We have two free poo bag dispensers near us on two walks next to poo bins @CoubousAndTourmaIet . No idea who tops them up

The boyfriend bit it irrelevant in this context. If you read her responses she comes across as extremely precious about her dog who would likely be absolutely fine. Kennels aren’t set up by dog abusers who want to inflict suffering. She won’t entertain any other solution other than spending the day with her dog and whichever other people - that is the bit that makes people roll their eyes, and say “get over yourself, it’s just a dog”

All the "not normal" "normal" stuff last night. We all have our own idea of what normal is. That's all. Let's just leave it there.

And by the way I am genuinely sorry about the loss of your cat. What a great age she was. Our oldest was 17 and we've had two get to 15. Our current girl is 13 and doing well. Our dog absolutely adores her and seems to identify as a cat, not being overly impressed with her fellow canines at all. Perhaps with reason 😉

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 07/12/2025 13:19

@HelplessSoul
Please stop referring to dogs as vermin.
Thank you.

Mothership4two · 07/12/2025 13:20

I imagine that OP is best placed to know how her dog would react to kennels. We have a rescue dog and, because of her history and experiences we have had with her, we would never do that to her. I know dogs that have reacted badly to staying in kennels and become nervous. I just took the OP at her word

@Talkingtomyhouseplants
Did you also see the recent thread about a dog that died in kennels? And the responses to it indicated that is a fairly common occurrence.
I don't think it's "precious" to not want to put your dog in kennels although in the case of the thread you mention, I do understand the new boyfriends family not wanting the dog there for Christmas.

Notadame · 07/12/2025 13:30

Personally I think it's fine to not want to put your dog in kennels. It's a bit like a child free wedding, isn't it. Fine to have one but then don't be offended if people with children who can't get alternative care for them aren't able to come. Same thing - if you don't want to put your dog in kennels that's absolutely fine, but in that case you have to accept not everyone will want your dog in their house.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 07/12/2025 13:41

Oh I totally agree @Notadame I'm very conscious of it, because my breed is huge and very hairy. Although they've all had good manners, I wouldn't take them to anyone's house other than my own parents, who used to dogsit for us. They are just too much dog for most people. At home we have 5 dog gates to aid any non-doggy visitors. I won't kennel because of giants specific needs and high torsion risk, I'd rather stay at home than leave them for long anyway.
